In Your Neighbourhood Would You Go Out On Your Own At Night?

I suppose, wherever we live there are places that are "no-go areas." In Carlisle this would be identified as Botchergate that has most of the pubs and clubs situated there. This is to keep any trouble condensed into a small area so that the Police can deal with it more effectively. This is replicated in all Town and City Centres. However, trouble can spill out into the neighbouring streets where there are instances of anti-social behaviour and crime.
Having said that, though, I reckon Carlisle is one of the safest places to live in the UK. I would go out to the local shop around the corner in the dark, but that's the furthest I would walk on my own. With hubby I can go anywhere as he's a lot taller than me but even he tells me that some estates are "dodgy." His sister lives on an estate and she can't stand it. She wants to move but can't for financial reasons. She has been living (along with her 18 year old son) with her parents on and off but the fact is, she is living in the wrong area. If that sounds snobby I apologise but I wouldn't like to live there, if I'm being honest.
So are there any "no-go areas" where you live?

Not really. Of course, things might happen if you go on your own in the dark but I can't think of anywhere I wouldn't go. Around where I live I don't really think much about whether it's night or day :-) In the town centre you might want to avoid the some taxi queues and some pubs at weekends, especially if there's a football match on and fans from somewhere else are in town, but apart from that I'd say it's quite safe.
When I lived in Vienna we also walked all over town, I used to walk home from parties in the middle of night even when it was a 1-2 hour walk. (I'd come home sober and walk off some of the booze :-) ) Never felt threatened in anyway really, but I know that there's one area there where taxidrivers refuse to stop in the night because they want to be robbed.

Wow, fancy living in Vienna at one time, even the name of the place sounds good doesn't it? Why did you have to leave such a lovely place (not that where you are now isn't lovely) but you know what I mean.

I studied there for 5 semesters, not in one go, I kept going back :-) When I finished my degree here I got a PhD scholarship in Norway, so I didn't go back. I applied for a job there last year, didn't get it *grumble* but if something turns up again I'll apply once more.
Or, if I get rich and famous, I'll have on flat here in Norway and one flat in Vienna. Vienna is very full with tourists and very warm in the summer, and I know that I'll miss the long, light nights. It's not supposed to get dark in the summer you see :-)

south Sacramento is supposed to be gang territory, but I don't live that close to it, other than that, it's a whole lot safer here than Los Angeles was. Lots of "dodgy" areas down there...

I am glad that you have found somewhere to live that is safer than where you were previously. Good for you!

Well in our area, it is generally safe. I can go out at night without the fear of being hurt or rob. But farther away, there are places that are also a no go. There are teenagers, usually gangs that would often fight in the street and there is a risk of getting caught in between. There are also places that you may be robbed. So its really important to be careful on those areas. Most especially if its late at night.

Yeah, I'd feel completely fine going out in my neighborhood alone at night. It's fairly safe in my area. Of course there are some bad areas in my town like most every town but that's on the other side of my town.

It's good that you can go out in the dark knowing that you will be safe..in your neighbourhood at least. That's excellent!

it's not there are no go areas,it's the fact that for some reason some people won't go there,i go anywhere at night, well i used to,i don't go out at night anymore coz i'm sad and boring and night time is for watching telly, but when i used to go out clubbing and stuff people used to hate me walking home on my own,i could never understand why, where i live now there is a certain alleyway that people on their own don't like walking through, because it's dark and sometimes there are teenagers hanging around in there,i walk through there i don't care, the only person that scared me was my ex husband, but i'm stronger now so i'm not scared of anyone

I like your attitude! I suppose it comes with age too. My Dad wasn't frightened of anybody when he was younger but now he's scared of the little kids in the street. Mind you, one of them did chuck a snowball at him over Christmas that landed on the back of his neck..he would've lamped him 30 years ago.

Hehe... sure i would go out by my own in my neighbourhood, sure theres polices wandering around here from time to time. but i wouldnt say that my ''hoods'' are dangerous or something like that. P.S you can always run if a bad situation is near...

Well I'm a bit out of condition so that wouldn't be wise in my case. Best to stay indoors lol.

Of course there are some NO GO areas in my town, but I would feel safe walking clear to the downtown area from my house at night. Two days this week I walked downtown in the dark in the morning. Some of the residentials would not be places I would go. There are three or four bars in town, and I would probably not go there walking, in the dark. An apartment house or two that is rather shady, as well.

At least you know where to go and where not to go...it's like that here although I wouldn't call this place mega-violent. It's usually the copious amounts of drink that are to blame. Having said that though, me and John can still have a great night out in Botchergate but we avoid the pubs and clubs that are the magnets for troublemakers.

I live in a sort of medium sized town in the UK. I wouldn't like to go out on my own, as you just don't know what kind of people are going to be around at the time. There are a lot of pubs and clubs around where I live, which means that often the people who are around at that kind of time are drunk, and might not be responsible for their own actions. I wouldn't even feel 100% safe with my boyfriend, and I can normally feel safe anywhere when he is with me.

Well I am very lucky to live in an area that is really safe and secure, the news sheet in our village has a monthly police report of 'crime' in the area - such things as dog dirt left outside village hall, and a stranger on the car park in a baseball hat!!
So yes I feel very secure!!

I have been fortunate to live in a really safe environment but am not so trusting that I do not uphold caution.
The neighborhood may be safe but you never know who creeps around and well I could be a victim. So with reason I do go out for walks at night since I live across from a park but I know my limits as to how far I can walk alone.

We have parks too but I think police patrol them at night..still wouldn't go on one on my own though, not even during the day. I would if I had a big dog.

Hi! Yes. We have security guards at night. So, in case we need to go out late at night or go out way too early in the morning someone is there to assist us. I think our neighbor feels safe this way. Be safe always!

That's a great idea, having security guards. I think there are wardens on sheltered housing estates (or in high-rise flats in Blackpool on an estate I know there) but they tend to be situated in areas that are close-knit, do you know what I mean?
The sprawling estates will have police patrolling at certain times of the night. As far as I know knife-crime isn't that high but that's down to the fact that Carlisle is a small city..it doesn't really have a gang culture like some of the bigger cities do...thankfully!

It's not safe in our area nowadays. Just recently, a student was held up and killed. We used to be a safe place, children even used to play outside at night. But now, we cannot be sure of our security. Maybe it's because most of the well-to-do people live here and the place has then become a favorite spot for hold uppers and carnappers...we just have to be cautious always..

I would definitely go out at night. I live in canada so there arent alot predators lol. We have a police station right around the road from where i live, so we dont need to worry. Also theirs lights that go on after 6 so its always light out here. To be honest i really think that people shouldnt go out at night only if they live in a violent country, or you know youre being stalked

Hi roguehawk, welcome to MyLot! It's handy having the police station nearby isn't it? We live near the city centre but far enough away to be "safe" from the idiots that come out to play, especially at weekends. They can't handle their drink, that's what it boils down to.

no i wont do that go out in the night due to all crimes. we would not know when this may happen and i dont want to be a victim. so if you want to be safe and you need to but something then wait until the morning.
be happy!

I would. Sometimes, but not always. The streets get dark, but there aren't really any no go areas where I live. It is safe for the most part which is good. I also have five cops in the same neighborhood as me, so I feel safe!

That's handy! Our local Police Station was re-located due to floods in 2005 and it's not that far away from us..which is reassuring. They still don't stop the "Boy Racers" on a nearby car park though but that's another story!
