In England, many cities now are set up with closed circuit TV or "CCTV"
Nobody WATCHES it, nobody is recording it, but it can be VIEWED later if there is something that takes place, like a crime or a cat put in a dumper...
Happily in this case it identified the woman who did it. It has also led to tracking down killers in cities where they are.
There's a case where a young man has disappeared, and the last time he was seen on CCTV he's not alone and its suspected that the person he was with might've killed him.
Catching people like this woman is one of the incentives for more to be installed so that nobody can get away with crimes in a city.

That explains it, I had just caught a bit of the video on TV. I know people here in the US complain that it violates their rights to be video taped all the time, but it needs to be done, perhaps. We have private businesses with surveillance all the time.

I meant was no one bothered by the fact that the video shooter did not help the cat. I guess I did not think of it being a security camera, thanks. Yes, I have seen two discussions here about it.

he was probably only found out 15 hours later. Just because the video showed what happened doesn't mean the people who lived at the house was home, or had looked at the footage before then. I am sure they don't spend there day looking at the their house video. Probably when they found out the cat was missing they looked at their footage.

I had automatically jumped to the conclusion that someone was there video taping. My "exercise" for the day. I did not stay and watch the whole news clip.

I understood from someone else that the owner of the camera heard the kitty when he came home and after letting the cat out that is what prompted him to check the video.

That thought popped into my head also while watching that. I assumed it was one of those surveillience videos that is often on buildings. If that were the case then no one was actually there to witness it but it was discovered later while looking at the video.

The surveillance camera did not occur to me. I have learned a lot from all the answers I have gotten to this discussion. I am glad someone did not just watch it and let it be.

My hubby actually did sit at a desk at a food manufacturing facility and monitor nine cameras. Did not pay much, but it is a job. Lots of security companies do just that.

Hi Garden,
I probably would not have thought of it either if I didn't work in a place where we have outdoor cameras. You'd be surprised at how many crimes that are not related to the store these cameras actually pick up. it seems that a few times a month the cops are in and asking my boss if they can view them. I've viewed them in order to look up one incident and caught on to all kinds of other stuff. Jobs could be created in hiring people to just sit and observe all these cameras. Most places only review them when they are looking for something specific.

Hi Garden gerty I read that it was a video camera from next door mounted so the camera picked up the woman throwing the poor kitty in to the dumpster., but if anyone was reading that video, why did not they hurry over and open up the dumpster and get the poor cat out of that horrid
smelly noxious place? Probably did not want to get dirty? people can be so mean at times.

A lot of the security video that is shot does not get reviewed unless something happens in the area.

It is the irony of modern media. Media want breaking news. News are created. Who can say that the cat was not throw to the dumpster to take the shoot by himself? So now people are going after devils pleasure. Putting other in trouble, people like to get entertainment.

No, friend, there is a video that shows the woman doing it. I have seen the video. Yes, some people like to see exciting, bad news. Some people like to do bad things. All for entertainment

You bring up a good question, and it's one I have wondered about myself. Wouldn't that make the person shooting the video contributing to animal abuse too? Like you said, they could have let it out! Doesn't that, in a way, make them just as guilty of animal abuse as the person who initiated it?! They could've called the cops (whatever) right then, or removed the cat themselves. In my view, letting the cat in that dumpster for 15 hours makes the person shooting the video an accomplice (of sorts) rather than a hero. A compassionate heart would have taken the cat out, not shot a video and waited that long to do something about it. I am bothered by this a lot too.

Ah, so that explains it! Geez, you'd think the news feed I get would have mentioned that pertinent fact...duh. Well, that's a relief that it wasn't somebody just ignoring the situation. That changes everything from what I thought I understood due to that news feed. Thanks for setting the record straight there:-)

I learned, after starting this discussion, that this was a camera on the outside of a building. They are pretty common in the UK and videos are used to catch other criminals as well. The person who heard the kitty is the one who turned it in and checked the cameras to find who had done this. Not, as I had been afraid, deliberately ignoring the cat.

I have not watched it but seen a little of it on tv but the story is so sad that someone would do this, although I know there are those kind of cruel people out there, sadly, my father was one of them, maybe that is why I am such an animal lover! I didn't know how long it was until I read your post and to be honest I hadn't thought about the ? that your asking but then read the answers and understand why it took so long now. Still very good question!!!

And the lady in the video looks so "normal" and "friendly" and average as well. Thanks for reading through the whole discussion.

I got just a glimpse of it on tv one night but didn't watch it if I remmeber right it looked like she was petting it when she put it in but I could be wrong I didnot want to watch it!!! Was also cooking supper at the time.
I always read through the whole post before I respond. When there are a lot of them and the host/ess hasn't responded to any I will usually not even post.

Because it was from a video in the area that continues to record..... hung on a wall video tape recorder. Someone checked it out and caught the lady doing the deed. I hope she feels the pressure of her dirty deed! How cruel!! Shame on her!!

She should apologize to the owners. Maybe that'll knock her down to her size where she should be. I can't feel sympathy for people like that. I just can't.

Turns out it was an unmanned security camera. When the owner found the cat, he reviewed the video to find out who had done it.

No, you are not the only one. I wondered how the cat survived. SOme people are just no good. And they seem to think that just because it is a animal it doesn't really matter. It is bizarre to me how people can be so cold and unfeeling. They shouldn't be able to get away with such things.

Well, as I learned, it was a security type camera, not someone out shooting video. The dumpsters are not air tight, at least mine is not, so the cat would not have suffocated, but would have been in peril when the trucks came for pickup. Studies prove that people who are cruel to animals also frequently are cruel to people.

Hey, lovely cat you have there Gerty !
As to this horror, I understand where you are coming from. Still there are so many bad people out there there's no telling what goes on we know nothing about as far as cruelty to animals goes.
I can say this for the strays here in my neighborhood, we all take care of ours.
Mostly , except for my two and the neighbors four or five? we all put out feed and water for all, including the strays.
I should think this person who put that cat in a dumpster should be hanged or also put in a dumpster for fifteen hours........or in prison for fifteen years !
As far as who took the video? you will actually never know....

Thanks for looking at my Princess. It was a surveillance camera. Someone heard the cat, got it out, then checked to see who had put the kitty in the bin. I guess in a community you have to watchout for everyone and every thing.

Hi, we also just got a call from my husband's brother in law and someone poisoned his black lab and also his little dog with anti freeze. They live on the edge of a small town in Colorado and Bob loved those dogs and someone must have been mad at him and poisoned his dogs.
It is devastating to Bob.
I believe I'd hurt somebody if they hurt my animals.
Yes, Gerty you Princess is a beautiful cat.
God bless, quita

From what I understand, someone found the cat in the trash can and then went back to their surveillence camera tapes to see how it got in there.

You are right on that. They heard the kitty, got him out then checked the tapes, called RSPCA and police. I just did not think of a surveillance video.

In this case its the security camera..so we can't blame no one...
bu there are other cases....too..in which the photographer just takes the chance to get a nice shot and thereby publicity to him or for whom he's working for....
thanks for sharing...
have a great day/night....

I am so glad that video camera was there to catch that horrible woman in the act of animal cruelty. Just think what other poor animals she could have continued to abuse if the camera hadn't been there to catch her. She is getting what she deserves right now. Actually, I don't think the UK is as serious about animal crelty and punishing criminals enough versus here in the US. She basically just got a fine and that was it! I own 3 cats and if that ever happened to one of them, I would just die. Thank God the kitty's owner found her in time.
