I had a 30 yr. career working with mentally challenged children who were so profoundly retarded that they required institutionalization. Thankfully we, as a society, have developed community-based programs to eliminate these institutions, but 20 years ago the facility I worked in housed and cared for 2000 clients. My job involved developing training programs for some of these people such as toilet training, self-feeding and dressing. During the course of a development meeting, I became aware that one of our clients had shown some signs that he might be able to read, an impossibility for a person diagnosed as Profoundly Mentally Retarded. I was able to initiate a re-evaluation of the young man which resulted in his re-diagnosis as autistic. He was removed from our facility, went into a training program for autistic children and was soon living at home with his parents.

I firmly believe in the principle of "Service." It's apparent that if you are in the service of your fellow beings you are also in the service of God.Let me share my humble experience about service. One afternoon, I open the window of my room and what caught my sight was a very lovely bird up in the tree chirping and if only I can interpret what it means I would surely talk to that tiny creature. Then suddenly the bird fell on the ground, I immediately ran outside to see the poor animal.I found out that there was a wound on its left leg so I got a small piece of bandage and slowly wrapped around the leg. I felt really sad for her, if only I could do something more to ease the pain I would really do it. But at the back of my mind I think I've done the right thing and I felt the happiness which can never be explained. From that simple thing I did, I know it's a great thing for that bird.
