Advice in affiliate marketing please

I have been a member of a few affiliate marketing sites over the years but have never really done anything with them. I am also a member of a mentoring program which goves you advice but I would like to advice in laymen terms so I have more of an understanding on how & what to do to be able to put this into practise as I am at the stage where I need to be earning more money & at the moment, there is no viable way I can go back to working during the day as I have my daughter at home with me all the time & can't get her into day car (plus she starts preschool/pre-prep next year in January). I do work part time as a waitress which does help but I need something more.
Please no referral links as that is against mylot policy - plus I have joined a few programs already, I would just like tips & advice to help me to get moving to make some more money.

Well, I have a great idea, maybe a little different from what you are looking for, but I would love to work with you more.
My idea is this, since you want the advice in laymens terms, I am willing to offer, to translate any technical terms to understandable easy to implement terms. For you for free, for as long as you like, you have merely to ask, what does that mean, until it makes sense or I really tick you off...which is a slight possibility.
And I will do my best to simplify, and edify anything that you want to know better.
