Just the title or beyond?

When I first joined here I was nearly caught out on a discussion because I looked at the title and assumed that was the whole subject but when I read what was under the title I realised it was a clever way of making sure people read the whole topic. I used the same idea on my "Join my site, it's better than Mylot" discussion and was actually told off for trying to spam. On a more recent discussion some people responded having obviously just read the title, their responses were way off track.
Do you just read the title then respond, have you ever been caught out by just reading the title?

Many of my discussions have a title which suggests something else and it is obvious to see from the responses who reads only the title
I remember your discussion and I can recall that particular response too. I did one that for a title was 'what's your favourite ice-cream' and if you then read the topic it was obvious that that was the title that I had intended using for the discussion which I never started
So many didn't read the topic and in that particular case they were the majority. Very disappointing too.
I read the title and then a few lines of the topic and then either move on or continue through and then respond. I have never responded just to the title because I know that often the title is only half of nwhat is being discussed and is an 'attention grabber' ROFLMAO
Many friends know that it can be dangerous to read only the title when I start a discussion. Those that were not aware soon found out when the responded without reading the topic on the one entitled 'would you stop everything for s*x'

You beat me to posting on this discussion by one minute, so I guess that your super turbo charged skates must be needing a re-charge ...

Can you believe me that I never try to be first on any discussion unless it is a FAQs query where I hope to get the correct info in before someone else posts something misleading?
If I see a fun topic I just respond and ramble and land where it happens, skates or no skates!

I can believe it, because you said it, so I know that it must be true. However, it just seems like most times you find these "fun" discussions before I do, even when I am not stalking you, so I just wanted to point out that you and I must have landed here about the same time, and you were just a tad bit faster on the "trigger" (or rather "post comment" button) than I was.

Nope, never. I not only read the title and the entire discussion but also generally read all the responses before I comment in my own response box on a discussion. There are some titles that are intentionally misleading for one reason or another, and then there are those that are related to the subject matter but not in the way that the reader might initially imagine. Whatever the reason, titles are meant to capture the reader's attention, but they are not meant to be the entire discussion. Therefore, it would only make sense to read the entire discussion before deciding what it is or it not about.

Making sense also makes cents but sadly so many do not seem to realise.
Irrelavnt responses are often removed and don't earn for the user posting them so it just seems so logical for so many reasons to read everything.
You know as well as I do that when reading the responses we can also land and leave several comments too, don't you?

Oh yes, there are many times when I respond in so many response boxes within a discussion that I feel that I must surely have left my own response ... but as Mykl has pointed out, I have found that between responding and commenting back to my responses within a discussion I have actually forgotten to leave my own response box. Of course, sometimes it is his fault that this happens as his presence and the comments that he leaves have me so flustered that I completely forget what I was doing.

Like another poster, I respond from e mail. When everything is loading right I view the entire discussion first. I probably have responded to just the title a time or two, but I do not recall any with serious consequences. I have misread what I was looking at a time or two and embarrassed my self and had to back track. These pop in discussions get to be quite fun sometimes.

Hello GardenGerty. I probably just read the title a few times when I first joined but after nearly being caught out I make sure I read everything now. I'd rather have plenty to read than just sit here thinking of what to say to a one liner.

Hi Autumn,
I messed up also when I first started. Now I read the entire thing because all too often it starts out sounding like one thing and then turns out to be something completly different. I saw your more recent discussion where this happened and it was actually pretty funny to see just how many people obviously did not take the time to read through it.

Hello Sid. Either they didn't read through it or the meaning of it went right over their heads. It was hilarious seeing people saying exactly what I was complaining about

Yeah, I can think of a few friends here who do this on purpose and I can spot the ones who only read the title very quickly..So can they and it becomes a joke, one that I wonder if the replier even understood, because they didn't seem to be playing with a full deck...

Hello Carmel. My last big discussion has a few obvious ones on it, some responses are well off track lol, although well intended. Some people on here are too clever so I always read their whole topic first

I'm probably one of the few that don't pay much attention to the title. I work strictly through email as I usually don't have the time to browse. My email tells me you've started a discussion and when I open the email I go straight to the body of it. I often don't pay much attention to the title. I usually open it under "view this discussion" so I can read a few replies and avoid duplicating them but it's strictly a skimming look, not in-depth unless I find something that is really interesting.
So titles don't mean much to me! I do look at them with certain people, though, who I know habitually do one-liners that aren't worth answering.

My inbox was getting so crowded with some that were not worth answering that I recently broke my own rule about not deleting friends unless they spam. However when twenty discussions are posted daily and ll around two or three recurring topics, sometimes repeating themselves it is time to delete. This is off topic, I am sure, just had to say something. I guess it is because I usually respond from e mail as well and the discussions were getting in my way.

Bratzmum, I have hundreds of friends and have replied to something for many of them. There is a small core of them that I can depend on to make interesting, quality discussions and I always try to answer them before anyone else. But I will try to reply to everyone that shows up in my mailbox unless they are one liners or tired old subjects like what is someone's favorite ice cream.

Hello Dragon. I do the same, I go straight to the main part if I'm using alerts but I sometimes just fish through the "friends started" section if I'm pushed for time. Titles can be misleading so it pays to pay attention and make sure we're not fooled
Hello GardengGerty. I deleted a freind a few weeks ago because they were posting loads of one liners and not even commenting back so you're not alone. I'm starting to get wise now, if someone posts a one liner they're invariably in too much of a hurry to add details let alone comment back.

I do find that I can get confused if the title is different from the subject. I also feel you have to put the whole subject in the title and that makes it difficult as I feel like you do, that the title determines what the post is. I usually hint in the title or make the title the first part of the sentence that continues into the post.
The trouble is that you have to be careful of the title and not give people the wrong idea, but giving the right idea in the title is hard to do if there is not enough room to put in the explanation such as "I hate when people say "Join---" don't you? That is why I like the start the important sentence off in the title and continue it in the post. Makes people curious.
But one has to read the whole discussion and not just the title, and also not just read part of the post. Get a lot of rants there.

Except you have to remember that some here are the more emotional type that when they see a title like that think "spam" and go and report to myLot without reading the whole discussion.
I have had it with my discussions when someone read part of the post and forgot to read the rest. I suppose that is also known as taking things out of context. I sometimes thought of going back to writing as I did when i first learned to read in Grade one, with the D1ck and Jane primers so they would get it, but I am not that mean.

Hello Suspenseful. Sometimes a ctachy title can attract people though, my "Join my site, it's better than Mylot" attracted a lot but some people thought I was spamming, quite funny really because I was actually complaining about spamming. I've been more direct with most of my titles.

Hi AutumnGold,
I try to read all of the "Beyond" but sometimes if its too long I do skip a few lines here and there. I like it what people use a full title, not just and over site of what they have wrote about. I think the key to get everyone to read your discussion is not to over do it with the title but keep it full of info, then let the first few lines of your text be compelling.
I have often thought about just putting anything on a response but really, it just a waste the authors time and my time. It is a discussion for a reason! Haha...
Take care
Dan

Hello Danalldred. I've skipped discussions before because the "beyond" has been far too long, if my attention isn't grabbed in the first couple of sentences I tend to skip it. That's probably a bad thing. A lot of people do seem to type anything but there's no point, I think this site is all about enjoyment and we cant get enjoyment out of responding to stuff that doesn't interest us.

Sagar - I can attest to the fact that you read the entire discussion before responding. You also read the other responses and often leave a comment here and there before commenting in your own response box.

Hello Rogjer. You just have to give good responses and comment under responses if you start a discussion. It's good fun when you get used to it.

Hi Autumn, I haven't been on this site that long to have a real opinion on this but I do know that the discussion title is vitally important to me and that's what immediately gets my attention and determines if I even go and look at the discussion. If the title is a misnomer and actually doesn't match the discussion I will still read it as they have my attention by then, but I am also sure that I have missed some interesting discussions because the title did not grab my attention.

I make it a habit not to be misled by titles that have no connection whatsoever to the content, but I have seen some discussion topics that are just there to spam and I don't reply to them because sooner or later they'll be deleted. The admin is there to check on these spammers so I just move on and forget about it.

Hello Franne. It's easy to be misled by a title, that's why I always read the content too. The spammers don't seem to stick around long, I think they're used to sites such as Yahoo Answers where people get away with almost anything.

Well there are those who are just in it for the money. (which isnt a whole lot)
so they just post randomly. Some people here actually like discussions. What happens is that the first type is the majority of the members here. They are the type that just says anything and everything they can say for the sake of that post count.

Hello Xenoyosh. That's true, some people just try to make money fast without really getting involved, I think they're the ones who probably don't stay long because they get bored or disillusioned.

Hello JudithP. I was caught out at least once, I was keen to make a lot of responses when I first joined so I suppose I was rushing into things. It's surprising how many people just respond to titles though but, as you say, it can be quite funny

Hello AutumnGold,
When I first joined Mylot, I just read the titles. However, after I read
the Mylot's rules, I know that you cannot give yes or no answers.
Therefore, I read everything now. Additionally, sometimes, the question
starts off with one subject, and at the end, the question is on
another subject. LOL

Hello Iequate. Yes some discussions are quite good in that respect, I like it when it turns out to be something we weren't expecting. Some people obviously don't read the full topic, you just have to see some of the answers on my last big discussion for proof of that

haha a lot of people on here have some sneaky yet creative ways to get people's attention on mylot. There are so many on here that look like it is all about $ex for example but the discussion isn't. haha. See, creative.
But I always read the title and the actually discussion but if I am really tired I will just quickly read parts or it but still making sure I know what the person is on about. So I have never been caught because I make sure what the discussion is about first. :-D

I always read the whole thing. I haven't been her long, and I suppose I can understand if maybe people get bored. But I see this as a place to have fun while earning extra cash. There's no sense in rush through titles just to make that extra 2 cents. People who do that will eventually find this to be too tedious for the payout and quit.
That's ok.. it leaves more space for us!

Hello Zeonsphere. Yes that's true, it would become boring if we didn't involve ourselves properly. It's definitely a good place to earn extra cash, nothing could be easier than having a conversation about things which interest us
