why people don't encourage others ?

I have seen that people don't encourage others but always think of negative and discourage others.
I told my friend that i am going to college to upgrade my skills, but instead of encouraging me he says it is waste of time and money.
Do you encourage others or discourage and WHY

People discourage others to put themselves above you. They might be jealous of you, they might wish they had what you have.. So they discourage you to convince themselves that they have it better.
People who discourage others usually aren't very happy with their own lives and that's why they do it.. I encourage others. I want my friends to do well in life, I wouldn't discourage them.

People who discourage others from what most would say are "good" things - like going to college, uni etc...are typically not very successful themselves or have had a negative past experience that has stuck with them their whole life. 
Your friend, telling you not to go to college because it's a waste of time, probably didn't do particular well through school, or had bad experience in college, or knew someone who had a bad experience in college.

It is because we're all different and unique. 
As much as we would like others to be like that or to do the same encouraging thing that we do for them, we can't blame em for being the other way around. We are unique and different like our way of living and our upbringing most importantly in my opinion. Based on what you friend's discouraging words of wisdom about you going to college, consider and think of the reasons of why he thinks that way about going to college? the reason could be because of his environment or how he was raised, his upbringing. Maybe his parents did not encourage him to get a college education back then and that is why his mindset and opinion about it is different from yours.
As for me, I would mostly encourage others and be neutral about my advices to them. I don't to discourage because I don't want to be discouraged all the more.
