Earlier google was promoting Mozilla and today chrome.
I am not sure about this as both the browsers are being promoted by google. Why google is not working on single and make that a better choice for its users. Why they are promoting both of the browsers. And they have some different functionality.

Simple. In the past they had that agreement with mozila to promote Firefox and compete with Microsoft. This continues, and also of course they promote their own browser Chrome.
Why they don't leave Firefox? Maybe because that agreement still is of profit to them, and also they know their Chrome is so buggy to seriously compete with anything but IE.
