It seems like few records from beyond the 50's or so rarely exist. Todays athletes are much more efficient. Some would say its the steroids, but not everyone takes them. My somewhat educated guess whould lead me to believe that we are slowly evolving. I mean the way we live our life as it is, has moved to a much faster pace, and in sports. Everyone is faster, bigger, stronger. It seems like a good explination.

I don't think it's evolution. 50 years is far too short and anyway we're so good at keeping people alive now that I don't really see how natural selection would work to concentrate the genes of those better adapted to sports.
I suppose there are a few professional athletes who get together and make babies, but I don't see that this effect would be so marked.
The improvement in records is surely more to do with professionalism and advances in our understanding of training practices and use of technology in sport.

It's just that we have better training and developed more efficient ways through the years of coaching. Maybe that is evolution in terms of adaptation to ones environment since it's always different. Or maybe genetics of that certain person.
