After so many second thoughts, I finally decided to own a new Digital SLR camera. I bought a Nikon D5000. It's not the latest model and definitely not the most expensive model of Nikon but I think it will suit my needs. Before buying the camera, I slimmed down my choices into two, that is between Nikon and Canon (there are lots of other brands in the market such as Pentax, Sony, Ricoh, Olympus, etc.)I decided to settle on Nikon because a good friend of mine has already own the same brand so, I will have someone to ask for tips and how tos. I am a neophyte when it comes to DSLR photography by the way, so I have more questions to ask and I have to study and practice more. How about you there, mylotters? What digital SLR camera are you using?? Does anyone have a Nikon D5000 model, same as mine? Please give me tips too. Thanks.

I shoot with a D3X, but am the first to say it's not the camera, it's the person behind the camera that makes or breaks an image. The most important thing that your camera can do is allow you to change the shutter speed and aperture, with ISO being a distant third necessity for the beginner. This will allow for more flexibility. But too many people think that the more expensive the camera, then the better it must be and that simply isn't necessarily so. Work on yourself first, and your art will follow!

I totally agree with you. In fact, at school we have this photo exhibit and the one who won used only a digital compact camera, yet he was able to fully utilize the functions of his camera and composed a beautiful picture.

As of now I am using an Olympus E-420. This is an entry level slr from olympus and I am planning to upgrade my body within this year. I am planning to stick with olympus since the Image stabilization is in the body of the slr and thus they have cheaper lenses compared to nikon and canon. I am planning to invest alot in photography since this is just a hobby for me.

I wanted to do photography as a hobby. But as of the moment, I do not have the luxury of time to start with such as well as the extra money to buy the Camera. Perhaps later on, when the time permits and the financial capability to do so, I will start with such program. A friend of mine has bought the same camera such as your and its doing perfectly fine. He is still in the amateur stage but I could see that his pictures are getting better and better. Perhaps later on, you will become a professional photographer. You can simply search the internet on a lot of tips... I am sure you will find a lot.

Hi, livvy I just bought a Canon 450D last night. Like you, I am a neophyte too. In fact, right now, I am Mylotting and fiddling with my new camera every now and then . It took me a while to finally buy a camera. I was always reading comparisons between Canon and Nikon. I think both brands are good. I just finally chose Canon only because I got a good deal at the store last night. Enjoy and have a nice day!

I have a Canon 30D, I really want to upgrade it to a 7D soon as I've used it so much it is getting a bit tired :-) A friend of mine has a Nikon, can't remember which one but she has a lens that is very much like my 50 mm/2.8. It's a great lens, cheap, small and sharp. I think the Nikon one is one of the sharpest lenses you can get for Nikon SLRs. At least without paying a lot.

I also have lots of classmates in photo class who uses Canon and they also got great images. My lens is just the lens included in the kit when i bought it, it is an 18-55mm lens.

I have only known the meaning of SLR when i became a photography enthusiast. It means Single-lens reflex. SLR camera doesn't just take snapshots, it can be more accurate and can give more versatility in taking pictures.

I think you made a good choice going with an "older" model. I have done that and saved big bucks. You still get great pictures and you can spend the savings on some good lens. I prefer the Canon but either one is a great camera.

Thank you bobmnu. Its indeed an "older" model of nikon but i think is good for beginners just like me. Plus, I cannot afford to buy those newer models! They are soooo expensive! Anyway, I still have to learn more about photography. I am still familiarizing myself with apertures, shutter speed, depth of field, composition, etcetera, etcetera..

I am still using my old but nifty nikon d40. Nikon has its replacement today which is nikon d3000. Its an entry level dslr but you can have good quality pictures out of it. Just get to know the camera and you'll have your way to a better photographs. After all its not always about the camera, its about your knowledge and skills and how will you utilize it. Happy shooting!

I'm currently using a Nikon D70s that I have had for going on three years now, but I think I have worn it out! So I am going to upgrade soon, and probably to a D90. Apparently the D90 is "almost" the same as the much more expensive D300, and for the few differences in the two cameras I don't need to pay double. I got to try a D90 a couple of weeks ago and I loved it! Good luck with your D5000!

Thanks a lot! And good luck to you D90 too! Hope you can share photography tips with me. I think you are an expert in photography already since you have your DSLR D70 for three years.

Yeah it's really helpful to enroll in a photography class especially for us neophytes. You should do so. Here in Iloilo, I enrolled in photo class every Saturdays and it's for a very affordable tuition fee of P520. The only expensive thing is the gadget..of course, the camera and the lens.

I recently bought the Nikon 3000 and my fiance and I can't say enough good things about it. Since I bought it I have taken about 70 more pics for my portfolio and they are quite breath taking. I would be happy to help you learn about shutter speed and composition, if that is something you are interested in.

Nice!! I'll add you as a friend for that.Lolz. Yes, i am really interested in the elements that could help to make a photo become not only breathtaking but effective in the sense that it can convey what the photographer really wants to convey to her audience/viewers. I am trying to search the net about those topics. Thanks for responding and hope you'll accept my friend request.
