We see that many of the most successful individuals across the world are either school drop outs with no degrees or any intellectual pursuits of an academic nature.Just to name a few Bill Gates( Microsoft ) , Larry Ellison ( Oracle ) , Michael Dell ( Dell Comp) , Dhirubhaii Ambani ( Reliance India) were all high school drop outs and look what they have done to the world and themselves ....most of the brilliant hollywood actors are school drop outs.
So this makes one wonder whether academic education or a university degree is really essential or is it the capacity of a person to succeed no matter where he is.Education no doubt adds on to his calibre to succeed in what he takes up....what are your views ?

The more education we have, the more i believe we can achieve. The path to success will be so much smoother. Having an academic education won't guarantee that you will obtain everything you set out to do, but it is a push in the right diection. There is nothing wrong with having education to back you up.

Hi sender, I guess that is true in some cases. But if a person doesnt really have the capacity to do better and also lacks the intelligence to go beyond what he/she has studied , he would remain where he is , probably climb a few steps in time but thats it ! - thanks a lot and have a nice evening

Being educated is the best treasure you will hold onto to rest of your life.It will make you o fulfill your dreams, remember that its hard to be promoted without your diploma. No matter how good you are lets admit the fact that the company still looked for your credentials. If you notice lots of successful individuals pursue even higher as college degree.

It all depends on fate too. Though you've named a few, they fall in the minority. These people had a will to succeed or a wonderful idea which they made use of. There are many other who have brilliant ideas and don't know what to do with them or they don't even realize it!
My dad is one such person who didn't go beyond high school.....but he's the best in his field of work. People call him from all over the world to work for them and he's much more successful (in a materialistic way coz that's the way most people view success) than his siblings who are engineers and well educated.
Another reason could be that the traditional education system does not conform to unconventional geniuses. Take for example Sachin Tendulkar...he is a genius in his sport but would any traditional school let him focus on the sport alone and not academics? That's where these brilliant successful people fall....and so they choose their own path which is right for them. In short, they have a bit of luck and lots of belief in themselves and that's what works in their favour. Whereas many other well educated people do not have the confidence in themselves and that's where they fall short.

Hi Kiran! Acquisition of any skill, polishing that skill , excelling in the chosen field based on this particular skill, and focus on work related to this particular individual strength make a person succeed. Whether a person is going to turn out like the above examples is another question and we can name only a handful.
Academic education is a must.Even these great people who were drop outs would definitely see to it that they give the best academic education to their children.
Academic education defintely adds to the merit of the person.. Application of mind is another important thing. Not all academic degree holders do have this.
If the people are willing to absorb the right sense of application of mind and focus on honing their skills utilising the opportunities offered by the curriculum in academic education, then they succeed. In these days of competition, without skill one cannot succeed; academic qualification ensures that a person is able to provide for his family, get some sort of a decent job.
THe application form of a drop out will definitely not find favour in comparison to the successful degree holder and not all can become Bill Gates.

Well said kala, most of us would view education in that manner .It is the absorption , the fine tuning and the application that is far more important than merely acquiring degrees.Of course not all can reach the top most position, but with an intelligent mind that has the capacity to utilise the education , one can assume that the person will go places...right kala?

Hello Kiran
I think academic education is a necessity for sucess in business atleast, if you talk to 2 businessman in the same trade, one educated and the other uneducated, you can feel some difference certainly;
More over luck is another big factor..

Think of this simple irony,a person with degree is hard to be employed how much the person who does not achieve any??We need to pursue our studies in order foe us not to left behind and be competitive. Its very hard to be ignorant in everything and being educated will gain the respect of the nation.

I think both have their own place, according to the person you are thinking of. All the examples you’ve mentioned are exceptionally talented in their own field. They could pursue their dreams and rise above others by dint of their own geniuses and not by what they were taught at school. Schools impart a uniform education to all, it’s the students own capability how well they make use of that education and where they are able to take themselves, inspite of receiving the same knowledge as thousands of other kids. On the other hand, education becomes imperative for the teeming multitude, who need some academic qualification to get at least a decent job.

Hi sudipta, I agree with that sentence that schools impart a uniform education and its the capacity of the individual as to how best they put that education into use ..Education, no doubt is important, but it is not enough...a person has to have the capacity and the capability to expand and utilise that knowledge...all the best and have a nice day..

With some people academic education is very necessary because they are "destined" to work for a boss who require academic qualifications and are not cut out to work for themselves in business.
A successful high-powered businessman/woman may not have any academic qualificiations at all, he/she is just very tuned in to the business world and can operate in it easily.
So, I would say, to each his own. It is not necessary for everybody to academically successful. _Derek

Hi derek, I agree that not all are capable of becoming super successful without educational qualifications . I notice that members belonging to a business family automatically inherit the ins and outs of the business and take over whether they have the necessary qualification or not..thanks a lot and happy mylotting

kiran8,
I can add one more example to what you offered and that would be Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was self taught though and did have the motivation to continue to self educate himself. Then again, if we were to compare the recognized needs of Lincoln's time to the current standards, I don't think that we could get away with having another nondegreed president in office.
As far as actors are concerned, they do take acting classes if the choose to, but I don't think that in a newspaper when they are answering a cattle call, it says, "Only graduates of Juliard or learning institution of the same need apply." They just try out for the part.
The scope of careers in general has grown since Lincoln's time. So, there is a need for degrees. We have so many careers to choose from that having a degree would just be a way to insure that we could get a job or at least when a potential employer looks at our resume, they know that we do know what we are doing or talking about.

I think institutional education is good for those who may need direction as to what field they should go into. I know that I would not have had the motivation to become the musician I am today if I hadn't gone to college and had deadlines and performances that I had to prepare for. For me, education is something I needed to help me make the most of my time and intellect. Other people may not need this motivator to accomplish their goals.

Hi , I too agree that educational institutes are necessary to guide and give us direction as to what field we are best suited to...It is important that every individual has at least the basic level of education, after which he can choose what he wants to do with his life ...thanks a lot and have a nice day

In my opinin is all about the person. I know people who study at University and not have a job yet, all it is about the method you organize your future and if you need academic degrees for that.

I completely agree. A lot of people who are successful in life only because of the skills they have.A lot of persons too who have high grades during school days but don't have jobs in reality called life. Sometimes your good in skills but you don't know anything about academic education.Maybe it all boils down to determination on how you set your goals and how you work hard to achieve it or the best way is to have both of it. =)

Hi shearry, I remembered an example about how an ordinary clerk became a stock broker making millions. he was working for a broker and picked up a lot from the day today stock market activities and became better than his boss...So it needs that extra something to succeed , not just educational qualification alone...have a nice evening

Academic Education is necessary to all of us, it may help people to be successful in life depending on how one person absorb and applies his learning on actual base..
I would therefore conclude that it really matters on individual behavior, either he acquired a degree on academic education or not.

...for me academic education or university degree is a standard qualification specially when it comes to looking or finding your job...however, when you say life success..it does not take an academic education or university degree to take you there...it takes determination to succeed and of course, patience....what's the use of your degree if you don't have the determination to succeed nor the patience in facing the challenges in life..

Well, nowadays, there is a lot of "push" for people to get degrees, but truth be told, if you are really smart, creative, and you have the will to do something great, you don't need a college education. There are so many people who have done things and created things and they did not have college educations, and then I know people who have college educations who have done nothing at all. So, truth be told, it really doesn't matter.

Hi rogue,It is this very push that has given so much importance to degrees and education is a big business. Just imagine to get an MBA degree in Harvard costs around 160,000 dollars...One wonders whether it is justified at all? that apart, we had a scam here at a high level where a couple of people involved were graduates from places like Harvard and Wharton...One cannot blame the institution, but there was something definitely lacking or wrong with the individuals...

yes people can still succeed for sure without the education one would think is necessary but the odds are not in ones favor on doing so. an Academic Education is definitely not necessary in order to succeed in a career. there's a big shortage of jobs where one can be paid good money just because of the stigma thats added to them. the examples i'm talking about are blue collar jobs such as welders, bricklayers, plumbers, as well as other blue collars jobs. where their is a job shortage there is surly money to be made.

Hi elmiko, thanks a lot for the response ..Agreed , the job market too is looking for those holding specific degrees. I also feel that education is no doubt a necessity in todays scenario where a person is categorised based on his educational qualifications...but it may not be enough to make him successful...all the best, and happy mylotting

hi kiran madam,
education is a way to know the things in proper way and getting degrees to show the certificates while joining in the jobs, but efficiency will not come with the education,my father also studied 5th class itself,he done lot of businesses and he was the leading business man in Fertilisers in those days, but i will say that that is luck,to became such big shots in business, education is not the criteria for success, have a nice day

Education adds up to,,everything possible, I agree,,,,,,on the contrary, common sense and working experience ( if available), adds up another ( large portion)weight where success is concerned. Also I believe that it all depends on an individual, what he/she can do.

hello kiran,
i say that academic education is important in every life. with it you get more opportunity. as opposed to generations of the past, high school graduates today are unable to obtain the number of high-paying jobs that were once available. different countries has been transformed from a manufacturing-based economy to an economy based on knowledge, and the importance of a academic education, more so of a college education today can be compared to that of a high school education forty years ago. it serves as the gateway to better options and more opportunities in life.
technique, on the other hand, on how to go about in business is one important thing that goes very well with academic education. the people you mentioned are very hard workers and wonderfully gifted.
have a nice day

Hi guys!
My opinion is that having a diploma helps you find a better job, because it proves your abilities to the potential employer.
The examples given here are the exception not the rule. Have you ever thought how many people have been crushed by them just to get where they are now. Too many.
So please don't make mistake dropping out of school.

Hi turist, thanks a lot for the response Nature has made the rule of survival- It is the same everywhere " Survival of the fittest ".Dropping out of school is not a solution, but using your capability and intellect to the best possible use without depending only on your degree is very much needed to succeed. All the best and happy mylotting
