Okay, I have heard some strange and scary anime related news but this one takes the cake. It's a few days old but apparently this guy burned down his house because his Gundam models got taken away. He also got four years in jail for this stunt. This has got to be one of the stupidest things I have heard recently and I couldn't help cracking up about it. Anyways, here's the full article: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2010-08-26/man-who-burned-down-home-over-gundam-models-gets-4-years There was a question that popped up in my mind after reading this though. Do you guys think people are becoming a bit too obsessed, to the point of acting irrationally, or anime/manga related things? After all there have been some crazy things going on in the past years (with the whole Death Notes in school and that one kid killing another for burying him in sand influenced by Naruto).

I've seen this in Sankaku, that is pretty scary. Well, in my opinion, he hasn't realized his true potential, I understand how hard it is for some to paint their Gundams, but yeah he needs outside interaction quick, nothing beats a little sunlight. That's the case with some otaku's (hikkikomori types) these days, they'd rather hide in delusion rather than man up and get a girl or even talk to one. They have to man up if they want to win in life.

You're right. Social interaction is the key. Obviously it can not be healthy to be holed up in seclusion all the time like that. Maybe this guy will wise up after his stint in jail.

Jail? doubt it, he'd be all alone and he'd be minding his business unless he gets to talk with the other non-bad inmates though.

That is really strange incident. I mean who would ever burn his own house just because some Gundam models has been lost. I can understand the fact that he really treasured those things of his. But it is not reason enough for him to burnt the house down. It's the most stupid news I ever read so far. Maybe this man is really obsessed with the toy collection. He can always buy them because it is just a toy. Or it is hard to find that is why he lost control with his temper and his crazy mind. If I am on his shoes I will just let it go.

I can understand that the guy must have put a lot of effort and dedication towards making his models but his reaction was way overdoing it. I'd be upset too but there's no way I'd burn down my own house, that's just plain dumb.

Some gundam kits need the buyer to paint his mech by hand, if those were the figures that were thrown, no wonder he'd be in rage...

I think we really need a stress management class in school along with a reality check. This use to happen back in the day with old Road runner and bug bunny cartoons. Also with kids coping stunts they see on TV. Anime has just been around long enough to attract its share of nuts. Sad but true if anime didn't make them do something stupid them something else would have.

Really? With the Road Runner and Bugs Bunny too? But I gotta agree with that reality check bit. Kids need to be taught that things they see on TV aren't real and they shouldn't be copying it. This should be the parents or guardians' responsibility.

Hi saizo! That is a very sad news. I think the man is too obsessed. Too much of something is really bad. It is okay to be a fan of anime or gundam but not to the point that it will ruin your life.

This is the reason why Anime is getting some bad reputation. Every line of hobby has a nut. So its not really impossible that some crazy dude can be found under the anime influence. Overall, anime is great, they teach lessons and helps us to find a means of escape from the stress of daily life

Yeah, you're right there. It seems like people are always looking for some kind of scapegoat to blame (like videogames, TV shows, etc) which is really sad because it gives other people, who aren't aware of what anime really is, a wrong impression.

Yes saizo6 We are after all humans and human tendency to be obsessed is nothing new. But the question is what you are obsessed with and how crazy you are about the thing you are obsessed with. Your posting just points to the dangers of being on the wrong side of the game. Moderation in anything suits everybody and good for the future.

That's so true. As for me, I wouldn't go so far as to call it an obsession but I am an anime and manga fan. I do have quite an extensive collection of DVDs and books. But I don't think my reaction would be as severe if someone were to take those away from me. I'd miss them and bemoan all the money I spent on them then move on.

Hi. saizo6, This is very sad here, so sad! I can't believe that this man was so obsessed with his Gundam models to try to set himself and his anime models on fire. What a shame! Seriously speaking, this can't be that important to try to take his own life just because his Gundam models were taken away from him.

Now that is just crazy. It is sad how obsession can greatly affect a person, even if that obsession(on cartoon character models) seems unfit for a grown man his age.

The morale of the story is simple, "Don't mess with a mans toys!". The article does not say why or who took the models? Most, if not all collectors are a bit obsessive.
