MANASSAS, Va. - Virginia State Police are not giving up on solving the fatal stabbing of one of their own. Police are hoping a tipster comes forward to finally close this murder case from 1984.
It was a Sunday morning, 26 years ago in Manassas, when a killer paid a visit to a townhouse and delivered death to a 31-year-old Virginia State Trooper.
Trooper Johnny Bowman had been asleep beside his two-year-old daughter when there was a knock at the door.
"The assailant began attacking Trooper Bowman at his front door," Special Agent Michael Elliott says.
Bowman was stabbed 45 times.
"The experts will say a knife attack is a personal attack and leaves little evidence behind, but the rage was obviously present there," Elliott says.
The killer fled on foot and was never caught. The case is still active.
"Over time people change and I'd like for them to do the right thing and come forward," Elliott says.
