Education used to mean something. Why is it so much harder to get employed now?

I was having this discussion with my friend last week. She was raised to believe that having an education was the key to success. But now, even with a bachelor's degree, she is finding it difficult to find employment. It wasn't this way 10 years ago. What do you think the problem is? Is it the war that had made such a difference?

I'm sure the war had something to do with it if not all. There isn't any money. I've heard someone say some employers actually look for people who are less educated so they don't have to pay so much!

I'm not sure what the problem is but I have a lot of friends who have finally finished college and they are all unemployed. I fear this will happen to me after I finish school next year. But I plan, if possible to move where my career can work out for me the most. But who knows what will actually happen.

Too many people are unemployed and they are willing to take any job to support their families. This makes it harder for graduates just out of school to find a job. Even part time jobs are scarce.

i think it's because of the system. there are very limited seats for them.

I don't think education will ever lose it's importance, but, as time goes by, it seems that more education is needed. As an example, there is a steel mill in a nearby town. It used to be that anyone could get a job thete, especially a sweeper. Then, all of the sudden, you needed an associate's degree to sweep floors. It seems to be a way for an employer to weed out applicants. A bachelor's degree used to be a very good tool for finding a job. That is no longer the case. Now, at least a Master's degree is required for jobs that used to be held by lessor degreed persons. I don't see any end to it. As more amd more people graduate from college, employers will become more and more picky about who they hire.

More people are expected to go to university at the end of their high/secondary school and so there is more pressure to obtain a degree. As more people are succeeding and passing university qualifications and degrees this means that business have more choice of choosing prospective employees. I do not think that exams are easier than they were 10 years ago and they may even be more difficult but a higher percentage are probably attending university than 10/15 years ago. Certainly when I left school around 25 years ago I don't think that as many people went to university where I lived as they would be expected to today.

It is because now everyone is getting a degree, and thus there is a satyuration of graduates... :)
