Early this morning, some friends dropped by on their way to the office and we got to sharing some stories. One that they shared were cases of some acquaintances who've had issues with things, usually money, disappearing. It seemed that they knew of some people who did it not just once but several times. In case of kleptomania, what can be done in order to stop it? If you know of one, what will you or how are going to handle it?

This habit is really a psychological one. This could only be treated thorough the help of Psychiatrist. =)

It's a bit hard to distinguish whether the person is a plain thief or a kleptomaniac.

Its so difficult to handle kleptomaniacs…even if you know there’s someone amongst you, that person is usually very smart and fast and gets the job done without anybody noticing it! I haven’t read into the psychology of kleptomaniacs but I guess they actually love to pit themselves against the world, something like a challenge and its like a high when they are successful. We had a relative who was kleptomaniac… an aged lady who everyone loved and respected BUT who was kleptomaniac all through. Everybody knew that, her own family never denied it…rather they warned us all in advance whenever they came to visit us…we all took it sportingly and were on our guard. However, one incident that happened before my own eyes was when they came visiting immediately after my son’s birth to bless him…the husband gave a substantial sum of money to me as a blessing for my son … my MIL immediately took the money and put it under the beddings and sat on top of it LOL (yes, the kleptomaniac lady was even known to stealthily open cupboards)… all seem to be well but I guess my MIL (poor lady) must have got up for sometime at least…anyway, once that kleptomaniac lady and her family was gone, we looked under the beddings but the money was gone too!!!

Kleptomaniac is an illness and the person who suffers this kind of illness needs professional help. There is nothing we can do for that person but to understand, guide with patience and keep reminding or conditioning their mind not to picked up things that doesn't belong to them. They unconsciously took things becoz they like the color, designs or it catches their interests, but actually they doesn't need those things. It takes a lot of patience and love to correct such behavior esp with adult ones. Kleptomaniac person should be understand and not to condemned, they also doesn't like it and no one wants to be a kleptomaniac either.

I asked them if their acquaintance already had professional help. I hope that would be the case because according to them those guys were are just in their early 20's.
