Do you think emoticons affect ratings?

I've noticed most people here who have reached 200 posts use the emoticons, do you think if affects how others rate you? Some of them are very welcoming, and I find myself giving people good ratings when they seem positive.. For example, someone sending me smiley faces and hugs is more likely going to get a nice rating from me. I think emoticons just help get a point across. Sometimes it's hard to tell if someones trying to be funny, or sarcastic, or rude, since we are talking online and not face to face. With the emoticons we can let people know that what we are saying is supposed to be taken as a joke, that we are confused about something, that we're shocked, or that we're just plain happy. What do you guys think, does this affect how others rate us?

Haha, I just might rate you positive.. Posts with emoticons tend to catch my eye, not that there aren't good posts without emoticons.

Hello 4ever famous, I believe the emoticons purpose is to allow us to express ourselves more specific. so that the users would know the emotion that you're feeling when making that response, comments or discussion. but from my experience emoticons can also help you earn a bit more when you use them i believe the only thing that affects your ratings is the star, when you're rated negative most often.

That's exactly what I was trying to say. I forgot to mention that without them sometimes we are misunderstood. What I meant by it affecting ratings is.. Are people more likely to give you a + when your post seems very positive with a lot of happy faces in it and such?

I think I get what you're saying for3verfamous. It seems like some people here think that you are connecting emoticons to the ratings system here in mylot. I think what you're trying to say is that emoticons can help us get good ratings because they help people understand us better than when we just use pure text. Is that right? If so, then I agree with you that emoticons do help us get good ratings.

i think it doesn't matter if your response or comment has emoticons or not.it's just there to let others know what kind of emotion we want others to see from us and it helps make the discussion more livelier when emoticons are there. it doesn't affect ratings at all cause the quality is still what matters the most. but nowadays i can't see those emoticons and reputation stars. have you seen them?

Hi, I'm not sure whether it affects the rating, but personally I like to use emoticons a lot because it livens up the response and accurately transmits our moods to the reader. It is a helpful tool in written communications. I guess to some extent it has some effect because when the message is better put across, you are more likely to attract positive ratings because of that.

When we started out, we need to reach (200) before we can use it here, it seems such a far away target but now I have long past the mark and have enjoyed inputting a lot of the different ones to convey different moods.

That's what I use them for too, discussions need some life put into them. I don't know how I lived without them here. I use that one most, seems to get my mood across loud and clear to anyone reading.

I have no idea if they help your ratings, which then will help your earnings. But now I want to know how to use them and I have no idea. So just in case they would help me, can you tell me how to use them?

i don't think it can affect the rating because for me, whats more important is the thought the responder wants to convey to you, the essence and the content of its text, not the emoticons,,, don't get me wrong, but for me, as long as you have sense and the text you send conveys emotions themselves, there's no need for emoticons,,, good day!

I agree. If someone can get their point across without being misunderstood without using emoticons, that works too! Thanks for your response.

Hmmm I never knew that, I think what affects most is the number of post you had, but surely, emoticons help in a way or another, but using them help conveys your thoughts , but hey, it would of course be a plus if it really helps, thanks to you. I would be using them now, every now and then.

I noticed that when I wasn't able to use emoticons, sometimes people misunderstood what I was saying and took it as me making a rude sarcastic remark or something when it really wasn't that.. Now with emoticons I think my point is getting across better, which could I think result in less people rating me with -'s. But hey, who knows..

Emoticon is they way to express your feeling using picture. Picture may figure your feeling and give many interpretation for everyone who see it. Word have limitation but picture beyond imagination. Small picture could figure out wide imagination which couldn't figure out by a sentence. I think emoticons doesn't effect our ratting directly. However, if you use emoticon appropriately, other member may like your post and then rate you up so your ratting will be increase. Emoticons are just additional feature from mylot to let you make your post more funny so the discussions will be enjoyable.

Personally I use emoticons to correlate with my posted response. If ever I give , it is simply so that the member understands that I am too agree fully as we are not suppose to simply say I agree, as per the guidelines. But when I do use it goes right alongside with my comment. I especially like to give , as if the person was in front of me I would want to hug them as a sign of comfort especially if it is a sad discussion. As to whether it helps our ratings I truly do not think so, as one question that always comes to mind is when a member started a discussion and then I give this lengthy response, I then get in as a response something like , so I have no idea why this member thinks that placing simply an emoticon will count towards rating, earnings or relevance to the discussion. But I suppose that is a whole other discussion.

I sincerely hope the contents (I mean the substance of the matter) scores more than such add-ons like emitcons and pictures. I feel any thread should help to find answers than pose more questions

The contents can score good ratings too, it's just the emoticons help us show our mood/feelings more accurately. If the point is getting across more accurately that may (or may not) affect the ratings.
