You need to sleep at least 7 or 8 hours a day. If you are sleeping less, then your efficacy in work while awake will be down. Sleep has a set pattern in your brain and if you try to re-schedule it, you will have trouble coping it. Have you experienced this problem ever?

I often sleep that amount of hours, but sometimes much less then that. I have also heard about that if you sleep less then 6 hours in a long period, it will reduce ur life time. I guess I had that reshedule problem when I traveled really far away, which have like 6 hours difference and I could not sleep at their night time.

Each person I believe has his own Circadian Rhythm, mostly people sleep at night because it is dark and melatonin production in the brain increases. This melatonin makes a person feel sleepy. Sleep is necessary so that the brain will rest and also it can function well the next day. If the person is deprive of sleep he or she will have difficulty in concentrating and so others will just be contented with drinking stimulants like coffee so they won't be sleepy. According to Maslow Hierarchy of needs; Sleep is a physiologic need like food, water and others which is very vital in the survival of the person.
Some may experience Insomnia. If the person experiences insomnia he should try to write a diary or read a very boring book so he can sleep. Try to exercise in the morning and not before sleeping. Don't take naps in your bed in the morning but only use couch in napping. Sleep is very vital to one's survival if a person is deprived of sleep for 2 days, he or she will be easily irritated, if 5 days without sleep the person will become insane, if 10 days, the human brain will shot down lobe by lobe and then the person will die.
