Dear Mylot dog lovers,
We went to Cartimar yesterday, a large market housing almost a hundred of different pet shops. When we got to one stall, my daughter fell in love with a Maltese. The dog is pure white that the owner of the pet shop claimed to be a pure bred which we also found out from Google. According to the shop owner, the dog is around 2 months old but without papers. He was offering the dog to us for Php8k. Looking at the dog, there are noticeable brown stains on both inner sides of the eyes down to where her mouth is. Apparently, they are just from the food the dog ate but I am not quite sure about it. My daughter really wanted to buy that cute toy dog but I'm not sure if it's a good deal.
We had dogs before but mostly they are the Japanese Spitz and some native canine. We don't have any ideas about Malteses. Can anyone help shed light on this. Any great insight will be highly appreciated. Thanks a lot in Advance.

I wouldn't buy a dog from a petshop. Because I don't want to encourage the puppy mills that usually supply pet shops. I'd rather choose a dog from the shelter.
If you really want a Maltese, you'd better search for a responsible breeder, who could guarantee for the quality and the health of the puppy.
The brown stains from the inner sides of her eyes are somehow normal for an untidy Maltese. They tear a lot, and if their eyes are not cleaned properly, the hair from the inner corner of the eyes will become brown, giving the dog an unclean appearance.

Hi dearie,
I know Cartimar is such a popular place for selling these animals. However sometimes or most of the times rather they are not taken care of properly. Okay are you looking for one that has papers? or you don't care. If this one is really a purebred that is reasonable even cheap if this was brought up in a loving home. But I know people in Cartimar could give you fake papers to make you think they are purebred when they are not. Sometimes they just price the pup on how it looks but it's parents are not of the same breed. Now that makes the pup a mutt.
If it is a mutt or a mixed breed already 8k is way too pricey you could buy that at less than 5k! I know of purebred malteese in this country they are priced as high as 28k but not less than 15k because this breed is not widely available in this country. If you wanna be sure of the pedigree and if they were raised healthy go to the pcci website or the ackupi web.

Hi Candyfairy,
Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts. I've been to that place few times in my childhood but only returned 2 days ago to find a big market place for animals/pet shops. I guess you're right. My daughter called up her friend this afternoon and she was told the same. Fortunately, she did not buy the dog. She sometimes has this impulse buying attitude. Thankfully, she held back. Although I don't personally love the idea of having pets before, we have had dogs for pets for a long time now. My husband brought home a native dog, the very first pet we had 2 decades ago and since then, we had dogs but we never bought a single one of them. They were given as gifts and some were given to us because the owners couldn't care for them anymore. We have a pure bred mini pincher now but he is already 8 y.o. So my daughter is thinking of having another one but she wanted a furry toy dog she could cuddle.
I'm hoping that she could acquire one from a good source. Thanks a lot and have a nice day.

Hi Bluebelleangel, I agree with inu, I would never buy from a pet shop. There are too many unwanted dogs and cats at shelters that desperately need a home and if you are set on getting a maltese, I would contact all local shelters and ask to be contacted if they ever get one in. Yes, animals shelters do have pure bred dogs and where I live you can even take a dog home for a few days to see if it will work out and you can take it to your vet to see how healthy it is and if it is a purebred.

Hello Carmelanirel,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and suggestion. I'll share with her these ideas but I think I'll just leave my daughter to decide. Besides, it's her call.
Have a nice day!

Hi P3ks626,
Actually we found out that it is so much cheaper for that breed. Some breeders were asking for 22K. My daughter's friend/breeder said that normally you don't get such great bargain for that breed of dog unless it's nor pure bred or something could be wrong with it. Maybe, we could get it from your place. That would be a great deal only problem would be is transporting it to Manila.
By the way, I've been there twice on job assignments and I love Davao. I had the chance to visit some wonderful places there including the Puentespina Orchid Farms in Malagos going to the Phil. Eagle conservation center and so many other wonderful places like Samal Island, Matina and Tagum.
I wish I could bring my family there sometime. Thanks for sharing the idea.
Have a nice day.

I wouldn't pay that for a dog without papers. I have a purebred Yorkie that I got from a shelter. I only paid $175 for him. If you really want a maltese I would look around some more. I've priced some purebreds at petshops and they want ridiculous amounts for them and they do come from puppy mills.

Hi Laurenzigzag,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Well actually our currency is converted at Php45.19 for every US$ so the cost would be more or less US$175.00 converted to your currency.
Have a nice day.
