Have you ever missed a flight?

Yesterday, my husband's aunt, who was visiting, had to catch a flight back home. We took her to the airport, but we got to the check-in counter a few minutes late. They had already closed the boarding gate and wouldn't allow her through. She had to go to the sales counter to change the ticket to the following flight. It cost half the price of the original ticket. Have you ever missed a flight? Have they let you go through even when you missed the time for boarding? Share your experience.

Yes, I missed a flight last year when I was flying to the states to visit my mother. I was supposed to fly from Rome to New York, then in New York catch a flight to Salt Lake. Unfortunately my layover in New York was way too brief for an international flight, just barely an hour. Not much time when you have to do customs and everything. To top it all off, we arrived late in New York so there was no time to catch my next flight to Salt Lake. I had to spend the night in New York. I tried to call my mother to tell her that I would be arriving the next day but I was only able to talk to her answering machine. She spent the night half frantic with worry, wondering why I hadn't arrived. She never thought to check her answering machine. I was finally able to get a flight to Salt Lake the following day in the afternoon. That was definitely not a fun flying experience. From now on I definitely prefer long layovers.

I guess there are pros and cons to having short layovers. It's probably practical to have short layovers for domestic flights but not for international flights.Besides, for international flights, you need to check in two hours before the flight so it doesn't make sense to have a one hour layover... Anyway, thanks for sharing :)

I hate when the layover time is only an hour and a half! Even if its just enough time I always inform the flight attendant of my concern. They will go out of their way to make sure we get connected, even calling the other airlines. But I still hate it.

I've never lost a flight because I was late but I've missed two flights because the airlines messed up. Of course the flights I missed were the last lag of going home from far away! Once I had to stay one night in Amsterdam when flying back from the states, the air security people were having some sort of shut-down in Southern Norway and for some reason KLM didn't manage to do like SAS did and fly up through Sweden, but turned around and flew back to Amsterdam instead. Another time I got an extra night in Copenhagen because SAS couldn't get any flights off from London. I was on my way back from New Zealand so I didn't really feel like making an extra stopover ...

It depends. SAS payed, since they made a mess of things. KLM didn't, they might have if I followed it up, but it wasn't their fault that there were demonstrations in Norway. They're a bit stupid though, my mother and some friends got stuck on Schipol coming back from Vienna, and they didn't get any help. Not even to the heart medicine that one of her friends had packed in her luggage. Stupid, but you should think they'd be a bit more eager to help.

Gosh! But in cases like this, doesn't the airline have to cover the extra costs incurred, since it wasn't your fault? They can't pay for the inconvenience though...

Hi amorlife1, Yes, I have missed a flight, or two in my lifetime. Thank goodness it was before all the outrageous fees got put into place. Most times I missed a flight, it was because of the airport shuttle gettin my departure date and time wrong. I learned my lesson about that, I now call to verify the pickup a day before my departure. Missing a flight is not only expensive, it is the pits.

yeah, missing a flight can really mess up your day! Especially when you've done everything right, and someone else messes it up for you!

I never actually missed a flight but came so close, as we had a friend drive us to airport and took a wrong exist. So we rushed and rushed and finally made it to the counter and were told if we and there were 7 of us including 3 children, one of which was my baby, we were told if we could make it to the get in 3 1/2 minutes we could quite make. Ugh we were on the complete opposite side of airport so we all ran, and ran like burning fire. We ran and the kids were screaming so we finally made it to the gate and it had already closed but they were forewarned us of scampering all the way over there so we were escorted out side and up the airport ladders. Running inside they shoved us all in all types of direction, where as none of us were together and told to sit quick. So I remember being so discombobulated and my daughter way far from me I bumped my head so hard as I was shoved into a seat. Whoa, just 2 seconds later the planes began to move. So luckily we did not miss the flight and reason we were allowed to rush in was because there were no other flights scheduled till the next day. Oh so lucky for all of us but what a frazzled flight worrying about my 3 year old not next to me. Never again friend thereon I plan 3 full hours to drop off and or take a flight.

Wow! What an experience! Definitely something that would make one never want to be late again! My husband and I have missed a flight before. But the lady at the counter was just mean. We were about 2 minutes late to the check-in counter, we had no luggage, and the boarding gate was still open. She just had to check our tickets and ID and let us go, but she just kept telling us that we were late. Later we found that the plane's departure had even been delayed. We were so cross, because we had a special ticket that couldn't be extended. We had to buy a new one-way ticket! Since then, we've never been late to the airport!

Yes Customer Service makes a world of difference. I mean she actually would have had to do a bit of work. HA! It is amazing how people just do not help each other out. Not common these days unfortunately. My situation was 15 years ago, I suppose this would never ever happen again. We were lucky and blessed with a great rep. Always best to pre-plan especially for the sake of our hard own dollars.

I was in training in Virginia Beach. And I missed my flight to go back home. They absolutely wouldn't allow me to go on it. I had to catch a flight the following morning. Because it was my fault they didn't really help me in any way. I had to pay for another night in the hotel, but I was able to just trade my flight for the next one.

Yeah, they can be quite unsympathetic when it's your own fault. But at least you didn't have to pay for a whole new ticket. Although another night in the hotel must have been expensive...

Never! We always go to the airport at least two hours before take off. Its necessary to do that cause you still have to check in and do other things in the airport. Last time when my husband and i traveled, we were already in the airport 5 hours before the time. lol It was a very long wait!

Wow! Are naturally a person that is always on time? Or is it only when it comes to traveling by flight? Cos I don't see how I could wait for 5 hours at the airport... by the time it's time to board, I won't feel like flying anymore! LOL.

I did miss a bus, and I did miss a train; but never a flight. It would have been simply terrible because I usually leave another country on the last day just before my visa is expiring in few hours. I would be in real trouble if I miss my flight. I take all precaution to reach well in advance. I travel light. Despite that once I was about to miss my flight at Dubai because though I was in time I waited to meet my son who was arriving by another flight. Luckily I boarded the plate at the last minute.

I think it's good that you make it on time for the flight... but to leave on the day your visa expires? I think that's just like being at the airport at the last minute :) You're just like me :)

No, thank god. I have come close a couple of times though, but I always made it somehow!

I guess you're fortunate! Cutting it close doesn't always work... unless if you always set off in good time, but unforeseen circumstances make it end up being close. But then, those unforeseen circumstances are the reason you leave early in the first place right?

I never missed any of my flights. I usually travel by plane. I always make it a point that I'll be in the airport 2 hours before my scheduled flight. In this way, I'll be able to check-in my baggage on time and at the same time I'll be able to be in the plane on time. No hassle at all.

I've been lucky so far of not missing any flights. IT's partly due to my character of not wanting to be late, thus i'm always early. Even if there are any changes regarding to early departures etc, i will not be affected at all. Though there might be possibility of flight cancellation etc, it's fine with me too, because there are so much nice food in the airport, and i can always kill time with a nice cup of coffee, with a good book in hand.

With that kind of personality, it's really cool to chill with a book and wait. I have the kind of personality that hates waiting, so I'm more likely to wait as late as possible to make it to the airport... But I'm getting better... I don't miss flights anymore.

But you made the flight right? I know how those overnight layovers can be! Especially when you're really tired. You have to really have a good alarm clock!

I've never missed a flight, ever. But there are many times when I cut it really close. Trains, I usually miss. I don't know why. I remember when I was in India, I literally ran after the dang train.
• South Africa

LOL|! I think it's because you know that trains are inexpensive, and they come around more regularly than flights. Let's just say it doesn't cost as much (in time and money) to miss a train as to miss a flight.

Fortunately I have not missed a flight yet. Usually I have my travel by airplane. Therefore, it will really spoil my whole plan and mood if I miss the flight. So I will make sure to arrive at the airport much more earlier:) I don't want to have any accidents on the way. I love China

Yeah, it's a good thing to be early. You have less stress, you can check in early, enjoy a meal and just wait for your time to board... no running around. Good on you!

I have never seen anyone just allowed to go through once the gate closes. It's a safety concern. I have however seen people allowed to rush ahead of everyone to make their flight they are late for, no questions asked. I'm really sorry that happened to you.
• South Africa

Yeah, sometimes the staff have the common sense to ask the passengers whose flights are close to leaving to move ahead in the check in line. But sometimes you can be stuck int he queue behind someone who's flight is leaving an hour after yours... and some people are mean and won't let you go ahead of them to check in first.

Once I did. My general manager won't allow me to leave the office until I finish the task she gave me. I was conserving my vacation leave so I chose an evening flight so that I can still go to work that day. I arrived at the airport 5 minutes too late. I got a flight early next morning and had to pay half of the amount of the ticket I bought.
