Coffee is the secret to long life .................... or is it?

Apparently so from the study made by researchers at the University of Athens. They have found that drinking a cup of coffee daily improves the elasticity of the arteries which ward off heart disease. The subjects of the study were aged between 65 to 100 years and are long term inhabitants of the greek island of Ikaria otherwise known as the "land of longevity" as a third of the residents are around 90 years old.
Possibly the caffeine and antioxidants may partly have done the trick.
Personally I think drinking in moderation is a good thing, maybe 2 cups per day.

Hi Carpediem,
I have heard about the same thing about some tea also. They say the herbal tea and even herbal coffe which I got to know in one of my visits to Philippines last year is very good for health and some are actually famous for their medicinal properties to ward off cancer.
I don't know personally as how authentic the claims are! maybe they are true maybe they are not. But I enjoy coffee but have a slighly greater affinity for tea. So as long as I enjoy it it goes well for me!

Hi bodhi,
Green tea has been proven to be a powerful anti-oxidant and it even helps to combat cancer! But red tea, black tea or white tea do not have that kind of properties because of the way they are prepared.
It may be good to take these in moderation to have a balance.

carp,
Well, be careful of these claims of benefits, they might be generated by coffee companies to boost their sales.

hi bodhisatya & bmp, recently I was in Kashgar and drank a very nice cup of tea brewed with saffron (with the option of adding honey). That was very nice and I understand saffron which was quite expensive has medicinal properties too.
I used to think that I can't do without coffee if i don't take it for a day but i have actually (& surprisingly too) done quite well without coffee when I forgot to bring the instant coffee mix with me when I travel and where coffee is not so commonly drank.
But in recent times, there are a few studies which seem to direct attention to the "benefits" of coffee drinking.

Study statistics change so frequently, today caffeine is good for you, tomorrow they may find it is what killed you. So for me I am Thank God healthy, but is it an attribute to my drinking coffee.
Oh I don't think for me this is true. It certainly has not harmed me, thus far. But you never know.

Coffee is healthy if it is not contraindicated to the health of the person consuming it. People who have high blood pressure are not advised to take anything with caffeine coz it would further increase their blood pressure since it is a stimulant.

hi bleeding, well said. Especially those who have high blood pressure, anything else in terms of proportions must consume with caution. Really need to know our own health status.

I suppose coffee supporters would like to quote the above study to justify their intake.
Personally I think there are two sides to a coin. Drinking coffee also has side effects as caffeine can cause nervousness, sweating, tenseness, upset stomach, anxiety and insomnia, even headache, fatigue, irritability, depression and poor concentration. Also people with stomach conditions should be careful with the intake of coffee.
I suppose there are no advantages in not drinking coffee, are there?

haha, i guess you are a coffee detractor. Guess we have a bunch of nervous, anxious, sweating, tense individuals with upset stomach suffering from anxiety and insomnia, not to mention headache, fatigue and irritability, with flashes of depression and poor concentration old cronies living on the Greek Island.
Everything in moderation I guess.
