Minnesota law requires proof of vaccinations-their district and encourage them to schedule appointments with a primary care doctor early to ensure required immunizations are given and documented well in advance of starting school. It takes at least four months to complete the Hepatitis B series.their is like 6 different shots hini, flu shot, and a variety of others above and beyond the normal ones. Who is going to pay for all those shots and what happened to if I want a flu shot or not, why should we be made to get a flu shot or the hini this is just a scam to get doctors and government more money. what do you think?Should we be forced to get all these shots for our children most I feel are not necessary I am upset with this us who can't afford insurance may have to transfer our kids to other schools. which is what I am looking at doing now.

I understand your point--you are not talking about the "regular vaccines" such as polio measles, rubella, etc. You are talking about the new ones--chicken pox, flu, h1n1, etc. I agree with every one who said that all of the normal vaccines should be required, but I also agree with you that I think schools are starting to go too far--particularly when they require Hepatitis B and h1n1. Why do elementary school kids need Hep B unless they are traveling? And as for h1n1, until studies show that it is actually SAFE, I don't think kids should be required to get it. There are many risks associated with that vaccine, many of which are more likely than getting h1n1 to begin with, and, so I think parents should be given the option on that one. I strongly believe in vaccines in general, but did not have my kids get h1n1 last year, and won't this year unless the school requires it.

thanks suzieqmom yes I agree we do need the normal vaccines and yes I was talking about the new added ones this year. I got the flu shot last year and was sick all winter. so I will not be getting that shot myself nor the kids this year, everyone body is different and not all people can take all those shots. thanks

I think you will find that most states require student immunizations, so good luck in your search for a school to transfer your children. Immunizations protect us all from communicable disease. I understand you wondering if they are necessary and the expense when one can't afford it. Hopefully your school district also has places where the children can get them a low or no cost; we do have that available here in Ohio.

If kids are going to be in public school, they need to be vaccinated. I don't like the idea of unvaccinated kids giving diseases to younger children accidentally.
We are in California and because there are so many unvaccinated immigrants and parents who decide to not vaccinate there has been an outbreak of Whooping Cough. Due to this my husband and I have been forced to get our booster shots. So this affects more than just children.

Hi mnflower. It's been quite a few years since I had to deal with shot records for school registrations but I remember being in a boat very similar to yours... We had the Hep shot series added due to a recent cafeteria food item being recalled. That one alone took 3 visits & was NOT a easy shot for most young children. The last one hurts the worst!
While we did have insurance, the deductable for dependants ($400) was so high, I knew we would have to pay for most of the shot costs. Circumstances at the time made grocery shopping stressful, much less required vaccines. Luckily, a friend told me about the "Shots 4 Tots" program in our area. I was able to get all of my daughters required shots done for free. I did have to go to where they were but I got lucky again & knew about it in advance, so I just made sure to be at the local mall very early on the designated date & got a much shorter wait for planning ahead.
Do they have some kind of shot program in your area? Usually the schools are able to provide this kind of information in order to assist their students needing financial assistance. If your school has a free / discount lunch program, find out who to contact for that & they will probably have the answers you need. It could reduce alot of research time for you. Sometimes the key is knowing "who" to ask.

Hi paidreader-long time no hear.yes there are a couple places now with people who don't have insurance, we always had the hepa shots but minnesota has added more you now have to get a flu shot and the h1h1 and like 3 others that is not the normal ones. just seems way to many.yes I am doing alot of checking for my stepgirls and others that don't have access to get all the information and see what others think of the excessive amount of shots this year before school starts it started in some areas but the girls start the 7th. very information comment. thanks

Waves. Sorry for that. Been very busy with the job I started almost 2 years ago now. Lots of advancements there so it hasn't left me time for much. Only a few hours here and there for online interests. Been seeing you on EH4U and wondered about you too. Grin Realized your notices were off & turned them back on. Glad I saw your post and could help.
By the time my daughter got out of school they were requiring the girls of a certain age be required to do the HVP vaccine for cervical cancer before school enrollment. I'll admit that I did not like the idea that this was Required but I did go thru my own personal battle of would I do it or not.
Costs are always a consideration, I know, but sometimes personal family history has to be considered. My battle was decided based on a close family history of female cancer. Mother, sister and grandmother. If I had to decide, I would have done it. As it was, I didn't have to, and it became a personal decision I discussed with my daughter & let her make an informed decision.

I remember all us students lining up and getting vaccinated in school... don't know who paid for it, though.

Schools are where the vulnerable section (as far as immunity is concerned) congregate. As long as there is a real threat, it is better to be cautious and take a shot rather than refuse it due of prejudice

There is no prejudice here just seeing what others think of all the added ones that have been added this year, and wondering if they really all are necessary, some people get sick from the flu shot and the h1n1 shots and both are now required here in minnesota and I know I can't get the flu shot anymore it makes me worse.

That is how it is in the State of California. If you do not have ALL of your shots, then you cannot go to school, and this is for any institution. My doctor gave me an official print out, several of them actually to give to any and all of the schools and universities that I go to in case they need to know if I have had all of my shots. Now, my university, in order to take certain test, you have to have the H1N1 Vaccine and the Whooping Cough Vaccine. You cannot take any of the major exams without them. It really stinks. Just about all of the public schools in the country are requiring this.
