watching the sun rise over the horizon

Somebody once asked me is there any difference between sunrise and sunset, and I replied "Yes, of course!"
Just imagine this, when you are watching a sunrise, you wait expectantly in the dark, then as the first rays hit you, you get all excited. As the sun rises higher and higher, the whole sky is alight with lots of colour and brightness, as the world fills with light, don't you feel that it gives one the feeling of hope?
To me, a sunset is just the opposite, I feel that the day has ended and everywhere is growing in darkness, and somehow this is depressing.
How you do feel about sunrise and sunset? Do you have similar sentiments?

Hi bluemoon! I think your description of both the sunrise and
sunset were perfect! Those are the two most beautiful times of
the day and I am happy that I have seen both many times. But,
the best sunrises and sunsets I have ever seen were at the beaches.
There is nothing more incredible to me than to be at the beach
at either time of day with the water crashing against the rocks
against the sand! I am also a "moon watcher" too. I have an
affinity for the moon and stars. I love to see a full moon
in a clear sky in the Summer or in the Winter after a nice
clean snowfall!

Hi Opal,
Nature often offers us some of the best sights. I have always enjoy such natural sights. When I go travelling I like to go somewhere with lots of natural scenery which are very much lacking in my country. Luckily we are surrounded by water and have several beautiful beaches for us to view sunrise, sunsets, the waves, the moon, stars as well as rainfall.

To me, both hold the promise as a rainbow that everything is as it should be. When it's time for you to sleep, it's also time for someone else to wake up and take care of the things.

Not usually, but I noticed the other day that there isn't much out here blocking my view of the horizon in any direction.

Reading that, I suddenly thought that having this kind of vastness may somehow open up our minds and our thinking may become broader.

I think both are beautiful, and I don't really feel depressed at sunset. I'm likely to be tired at sunrise though. Not a morning person...

According to many others here, sunset is also beautiful, and we can think of it as a relaxing end to a busy day. It's time for me to start appreciating sunsets!

You are right to say that, however, I'm not changing because everyone else say so. It's because I think I can learn to be more positive and try to appreciate beauty in another way. Thanks for your advice

Hello bluemoonpavilion,
Well, actually i have never thought like that about sunsets, but they are beautiful too. Most of us are lazy to get up early in the morning to watch a sunrise.
Evening is one the best times you could have a walk with your partner and see the sun set. There would be nothing else you would want to think of.
What comes, has to go one day.

haha lazy bones....
It's good to wake up early to get the fresh air you know. I agree a walk in the evenings is romantic and that works if I'm on a holiday but on normal days, I rather watch the moon.

hi yes I love to watch the sunrise and get that wonderful feeling of'a new day a gift to open unused and anything good could happen,.but to really appreciate a California sunset you should be on the beach and watch the sunset slide down behind the waves its so gorgeous and just awesome to watch. I like sunsets as it means its time now to relax and dump all worries and stress as a new day will come.

The beach or at the top of a mountain are the best places to watch sunrise or sunset from. It is a new perception for me that after sunset, it means time to rest and relax.

I love sunset! Well because I'll be able to see the moon and the stars again. I love it when dark comes. Also it's colder when night comes.
I have watched a sunrise before. At a beach. I think it's really nice and lovely. Also before August ends, I spend the night with my friends. And we actually saw the sunrise. What's nice about it is that we we're able to see the sun as it rises, and the moon is still visible. We also saw how the sky changes it's colors and how the sky was in half. Light and dark at the same time. It's really nice! ^_^

Hi trisha,
Often we can see the moon in the daytime and it doesn't make it so special, only when night comes, everywhere is shrouded in darkness and only the moon giving off the light. That is also a spectacular view to see.

Hiya bluemoon,
Oh no the Sunset for me is marvelous most of the times even if I am in a bad mood or feeling sad.
A beautiful Sunset can reconcile me with the World I can tell you.
Sunrise well before I used to be up at that time of the Morning lots of times but now I sleep a little extra as I think I have earned it too.
I often take Photos of Sunsets.
Sunrises are beautiful if you are traveling and you have more chance to notice it. More than seeing the Sunrise I like to hear it the Birds start to come to life their chirping, the blackbird singing on the Rooftops. I find that so beautiful. Of course I donĀ“t notice all this every Day of the Week.
I like the two of them Sunset and Sunrise but the Sunset gives off the most beautiful colours.

Hi lovinangel,
So for you, the sunrise experience is also a combination of hearing the sounds from birds?
Indeed sunset is beautiful when clouds surrounding the sun are also dyed with the different colours of red, yellow and gold.

...Hi there bluemoon, Sunrises and sunsets are some of the most beautiful scenes of nature ever in my opinion. The different colors that are in the sky, very spectacular. If you happen to be near water they are even more colorful and lovely to watch. I don't find sunsets depressing because I look at the colors and enjoy the beauty of the sky and all its splendor. The moon fascinates me as well, the light that shines from it, it looks like a plate of translucent glass. What a world we live in with nature's glory. Interesting discussion. Take care.

Hi art,
That is why we like to look at sunrises and sunsets at the beach, besides a view of the whole wide sky, the water also reflects the colours. The moon viewed over water is a beautiful sight too. Thanks for dropping by.

Sunrise pretty much means the start of a new beginning. telling us that there's nothing we can do but keep moving forward and that we have yet another day to live and be happy about. Sunset on the other hand as you said means the end. but sunsets have its own beauty as well, it somehow tells us that after a day's work is the time to relax and gives rise for the moon to show its beauty.
somehow sunsets gives off a reflective feeling while sunrises just gives you energy.

I guess it's the transitional feeling, from light to dark that I do not like.
I like the way you said that sunset "gives rise for the moon to show its beauty", sunset may be melancholic for me, but think of it as giving way to give birth to the beautiful moon and that is also heartening.
Also, "sunset gives a reflective feeling", that is so well said. At the end of the day, it would be good to reflect on the day just passed and do a self assessment.

Hi bluemoonpavilion, In some ways a day can be compared to one's lifetime. I agree with you that watching a sunrise is much more exciting than a sunset, although both has it's beauty. The beginning of a new day should fill us with joy as each day can be a new beginning for all of us. Noon brings us the strength of youth and as the day progresses into evening it's strength decreases. Sunset can be seen as the end of one's life and can bring depressing thoughts but it also has a feeling of peacefulness and the knowledge that the sun will rise again in the morning. Blessings.

Thanks for sharing this very philosophical thoughts. There is a Tang poem which is roughly like this "Sunset is of infinite beauty except dusk is impending". This gives one the feeling of sadness that good times are coming to an end.
However, someone tweaked the poem a bit and changed it to mean, "As long as sunset is of infinite beauty, why bemoan that dusk is impending", giving it a positive twist.

There is just something about watching the sun rise. the sun rising is the beginning of a new day. there is so much promise each new day can bring. Watching the sunset is spectacular too. You slowly watch day lose its light and watch as darkness falls upon the sky. it is the in between time that holds so much magic as the sky goes through change.

The change from dark to bright seems to be promising a new day, signifying that the new day would be brighter, thus gives me that feeling of hope.

Love the way you showed these opposites. On the other hand I love to watch both actually. It's the beautiful transition that comes with an explosion of a myriad of colors. And they only happen during these two wonderful times, sunrise and sunset. Somehow there is magic in them.

Thanks!
You've described it beautifully, the transition brings about the colourful sky and we are lucky that we can view it often, as long as we wish to.

Hi, bluemoonpavilion!
Have you seen sunrise and sunset many times? So lucky for you to see these wonderful scenery! I envy you. My hometown is rounded by hills, so I don't have chance to see the sun rising over the horizon. This summer I went to the Mount Huang, where is said to have the most beautiful in China. But unfortunately that day was foggy and cloudy so I didn't seen anything.

Hi qianyun,
Yes, I have seen them many times and I never fail to get excited each time I witnessed it. I saw more sunrise than sunsets because I like to spend time at the beach and sometimes I would go camping overnight at the beach, then we would try to wake up early to witness the sunrise.
It's quite nice to see the sun rise from behind hills too. I have wanted to visit Mt. Huang, some of my friends went and came back with beautiful photos and even wrote poems about it. Well, it has its own beauty in fog and clouds, creates the feeling of mystery and mystic.

Color has meaning and affects our emotions. Like read for hot and warm symbolizing love or bravery. Blue for coolness and neutral. Watching sunset and sunrise gives me the enjoyment of seeing color mixing from bright light to dark. From dark to bright. It's gradual changes and the color mixing involve in the sky somehow remind me of life. Of human struggles against evil and the hope of a bright future a head.

That is wonderful, to share the witnessing of a sunrise with so many people, it could feel so exhilarating to everyone present. I do feel sad sometimes as the sun goes down.
Thanks for your response.
