I think I can give a good advice on this, being a person who experienced grief from the loss of a loved one, being a person who underwent severe depression...
Please tell your friend that there is no cure for the pain. It is something that one has to deal with. It is an agonizing fact to move on with life after something unbearable has happened unexpectedly. But God has a reason for everything. And it's true, whenever something is taken away, God will give you the strength that you need to face life and move on with the changes.
Unbearable pressures and disappointments are part of the cycle of life. It is through dealing with these stages that makes a person stronger. Nobody wants to deal with this, but pain is constant in our lives. We have to learn to face the trials every time we encounter one. But also, we should not be numb because of the numerous heart aches that we encounter in life. We should still be human and ready to accept the pain each time. Through this, we welcome life as it is, and not be bitter because God does not single out any one of us. It is His way of testing our faith because God has His own reasons that will be revealed in the right time.
Hope your friend will overcome this painful stage...
