Make up..why women and not men?

Ok..I have heard why women think they need makeup
including "a little paint on an old barn makes it look better"
Yet...This is only for women.
Why is it that society always pushes for women to
be less real then men?
I was so glad to see the newsclip where hollywood stars are now
going "natural" and opting to go without the paint (makeup) on their face.
Why is it that it's ok for me to go without and not women..
Why is it considered not pretty for women to be without makeup and
not so for men..
Who made this the norm?

It is not society but women themselves that are the driving force behind this social convention
all the best urban

I have to disagree..
It is society..
This is not a women driven problem'
Women may drive it now..but it's not
where it began..remember there was a time
that women "had their place." man was
the main driver..women kept quiet..
this began long before tv and media

Hello littlefranciscan,
I don't really like women with lots of make up which is prominent. I just like it if they would apply mild and we won't know. Well i hate radiating lipsticks and too narrow eyebrow lining or what ever you women say that, Lol. Anyways.. To be frank, what would we men put for makeup ? Like, these days i am seeing fairness creams for men! I believe they do no good to us, and women don't need it either. And if i would talk about our face, it would be much better if we remain clean shaved and nicely cut hair, we don't need anything else do we ? Honestly, make up for men sounds a little i don't know he he.. Girlish. Lol, hope you understand.
Why would dark men want to become fair?

I understand what you mean.
The point of this discussion is that we are so programmed by society
we think that makeup .. is only for women..and men would look girlish with it.
Men can get by with very little..women have to spend hours to make
themselves look better..WHY? ..
I am doing my degree in Psychology and a nice portion of the
studies in my present class talk about gender norms..etc.

as far I know, at first, the male also dressed up ..... yes, it happens at the time of reinansance where the male participated primp using powder and lipstick. But that has shift when the men were more aware that primp and adorn face is the domain of women

I don't think it was always that way...
We have many groups of people who never
put on the junk..Look at the Amish people
and some protestant groups . .Many
beautiful people and women..no makeup.

I don't really know who really did make this norm about women requiring makeup to make themselves look pretty and attractive in person. I think maybe it was developed many years ago. It really is nice to see the female celebrities going all natural to prove they don't need makeup to look gorgeous. I have seen some women that put on way too much makeup and they look clown like or freakish to me. I have heard of makeup for men but none of my male friends wear makeup.

I first saw something..whether it was
the early show or the today show..
Nbc or CBS.. I can't remember but
they spoke of a trend starting with
celebrities who are going natural..Good for them!

Well, i think this started in the olden time when Cleopatra has to use different kinds of makeup to enhance her beauty. I have read that she even use natural herbs or plants as a beauty regimen. Another thing is women are objects of beauty. In the past women has to find a good husband and so she has to beautify herself to be able to find one. Maybe also, women have more time than men because they just stay home at that time and all they do is to take care of themselves. While men are warriors and they don't have the time to beautify themselves. This is just my opinion but i think we have to research on this further.

Women seen as "objects" ..like they are
things to please men.. Women are men's equals
I think the idea that women have to change themselves
to have men like them.. is too much..I think
in old days..they didn't do it.. It may have
been a thing for the high class and rich..but
not the poorer folks..

Probably some women!(Just kidding) Men are seen as rugged beings and more rough they looks the better is the notion. But women need to be soft, tender, lovely and made up to play the part of being tender of the sexes. Probably women need makeup to apparently match this expectation of others!

so caking on makeup and black eye lining

Didn't men wear makeup back in the elizabethan times ? but they looked so gay they most likely stopped so they knew who was who. ;) but for myself give me a woman with no makeup au natural anytime, i want to know who im waking up next to, all that clown makeup can be used in a circus, or for childrens play time.

Yes and women use to always wear dresses to distinguish them from men..
It's all a push to get your dollar.
I bet women didn't always spend so much on make-up either.

Actually believe it or not, there are make up brands that specifically are made for men. (I do not use it haha) but there are many companies. One of the more popular ones is called 4voo. I guess its becoming more accepted for men to wear it as well....I think Ill skip on that one lol.

Really, I never heard of make-up for men: but yay!!
I think that there should be equal push for men to
wear make-up as women. I think women are singled out
to always appear to be less then perfect unless they
wear all the jewelry makeup perfumes etc..it's been
the trend for so long

where ..in any "bible" "book of mormon"
talmud..or other religious book of guidelines
does it say ..women paint your face..starch
your hair ..spray yourself up with perfumes.
The Holy BOoks all say ..adorn yourself with
virtues etc..that is what God intented .natural
is what is already yourself..anything extra
you add..is unnatural

People wear makeup because they choose to. I never wear makeup, as I'm kind of lazy for doing it and removing it later, and I haven't been told that I'm less attractive because of doing that.
Men in movies always wear makeup, and also to photosessions too, by the way

You know...it's not just putting it on and off
but listen to yourself.."I been told I am
less attractive without it.."
Isn't it sad that others dictate what should look like..
We are never our selves if we are afraid to be
something that others tell us not to be.

I think its nature. From the beginning women are temptation of men as Eve tempted Adam, that's why maybe women did everything for men be attractive and one proving that make-up adds the beauty of a woman although some are naturally pretty but very seldom.

Make-up covers up your real beauty.
There is nothing natural about it.
It's artificial from the start.

i think this is because of the god's creation .. he create man with all the beauty with him itself... no need to take anything for that... there he is having all the beauty he need...
but women are not like that... they have to take some steps to finish or add their beauty...
I think it is because of the difference between hansom and beauty... it is not possible to increase hansom with any of the artificial thing.... but we can increase the beauty with make up things....
May be this is the reason..... what you think?

I tried wearing a little makeup for the first time when I started college and I hated it. It felt yucky and I thought I looked ridiculous. I've never worn any since then. It's less and less the norm for women to wear makeup, at least in everyday life. There are jobs that require it, and special occasions when people like to dress up, but when I walk down the street, I hardly ever see anybody wearing makeup. There are women who are very self-conscious about their looks and think they look better with makeup. That's sometimes true, but not too often, really.

I bet those who pile on the make-up are forever
trying to make themselves more beautiful..
As if all the make-up in the world can change the person
you are in side.. I think the person who goes natural
says more to a man then the one who doesn't ..it says
I am not hung up on supeficilies..

I agree 100 percent but too many people
for years and even centuries have been
hit by commercials propaganda .. media
etc. that tell you ..beauty is acquired
by putting on this or spraying on that..
Some even believe "blondes have more fun"
IT's all rubbish.

I have totally no idea who came up with this norm as well; I think it originated from the ancient past long enough for us to be able to trace back. Anyway, I think women prefer to make up because they want to look younger and perhaps to attract men. On the other hand, because make up has long been associated with women, making up for men will only make them look less masculine and more feminine. For example, what would you think of a man who puts on lipstick? Honestly speaking, beauty is really in the eye of the beholder and I am sure there are many men who still find women attractive even without any make up. And for me, I believe character and personality is more important than looks anyway.....cheers!

So it's a gender thing that probably was invented by men.
I think we have strange ideas about what makes a man a man
and a woman a woman; don't you think?

I won't tell anyone that you do this..shhh;)
I think that we need to break through all these stereotypes
If you say we are free.. and are chained to gender rules
then we are not free at all..we go by what others say we
have to do.

IF men want women to wear ..let them paint their faces too!
Attractive in that sense is only skin deep.
It puts the value only on the surface instead of the heart
A woman can look just as pretty if she fixes her hair brushes her teeth, washes
her face and smiles

There is no any kind of norm or anything like that. It has to do with some kind of genes that are present in higher number in a womens body and very less number in males body. If you think, all the women form all the countries have a tendency to makeup, in general, as compared to men. And this is true, since centuries. Do you agree.

I don't think it's in your genes to put up makeup
Children don't desire to put on make up till
mom or friends tell them it's something you should do.
It's a social norm that has been stretched out for a very long time.
I don't wear makeup and fill it's an insult to women..which
women have acccepted as necessary .. to say you need to paint
your face to be pretty..it makes beauty something very superficial.
Some put very lightly and it's nice..some cake it on so much
it's so obviously artificial.. Yuck
