What are your opinions on Nicholas Spark's books?

I have read three of Nicholas Spark's books - 'The Notebook', 'The Wedding' and 'The Last Song'.
The first book that I read was The Notebook, and I thought that it was a lovely, and very sad book.
However when my daughter passed on 'The LAst Song' for me to read I was very disappointed - Sparks actually only wrote the novel AFTER he wrote the screenplay for the film of the same name , a film that had been created solely for Miley Cyrus (of Hannah Montana fame)– she even chose her character’s name!
I didn’t like this book anything much as I liked ’The Notebook’, in fact I couldn’t really say that I liked it that much at all; I wonder if it was because I knew that Miley Cyrus was playing the role and I envisaged her as the character in my mind, I don’t know !
I felt that the book was more suitable for younger readers - young teens I would have said - and I also think that there was just TOO much of a Disney feel to the book – again could this be because of the film; it felt like I was reading a ‘High School Musical’ or ‘Camp Rock’ book at times.
I said that I would never read another book from Sparks but when I learned that ‘The Wedding’ was the sequel to 'The Notebook' I decided to give it a try.
I have to admit to being sorry that I bothered - I thought that it was sickly and cheesy and I think that this time I probably mean it when I say I won't bother with another of his.
Have you read any of his works, and what did you think?

Hiya chem,
Same for me I have not read any of these Books or seen the Films or anything. Although I live in Spain there are hardly any decent books in English this side of the World.
Hence if I cannot find a decent book in Spanish how can I find one in English.
I wanted to look for a couple of books when I went to Malaga on a very quick trip. But it was so terribly hot and I was so terribly tired I did neither.
I would have to go to a Shop in the City which is quite far from here just to be able to ask for a Book in English and then they have mostly Classics only anyway for the University Students so you can tell that it is much harder for me to get to read in English except on the internet of course (grin).
Nonetheless they sound like very good books and I don´t want to buy them in Spanish as it spoils the whole thing.

Hiya chem,
Would not have much trouble posing as a Tourist as most People think that you are on Holiday anyway here. Well all I can say is that I have been on a long Holiday what Holiday?
Besides the minute I get into the Reception I will stand out a mile that I am English. I have not changed very much in that aspect I think live and breathe in English. Long way to go for a Book in English though only a thousand odd miles (grin) just round the corner and left a little, right a little.
Speak Spanish with a Wolverhampton Accent (grin) that´s me and right proud of it I am as well. I know one or two that try to hide where they are from and they cringe when they hear the expressions I come out with but I am me not someone else. But I would not have much trouble being take for a Tourist any Day of the week. Right finished I am writing a book on my own here (grin).

Hello oldchem!
I actually saw a women in the subway reading a book by Sparks. It caught my attention because of the cover and I memorized the name of the author to further search it because she seemed to be so captivated by it. But after all I've read here, I don't know what to think anymore...Because the woman was so passionate with her reading and from what you guys said it's just another cheesy author.
I'll let you know if I do decide to give it a try myself.
Till then, thank you for the intel and happy posting!

I just finished reading Nicholas Spark's "Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas"... Have you read that too? I cried in the last part of the story... At first, I am confused in the story but later on, I get it...
I still haven't watch the movie because it's I think in a mini-series in a US TV network and I don't know how I might be able to watch it because it's already aired I think years ago...

I haven't read any of Nicholas Sparks' books, nor have I seen any of the movies (though my daughter did buy The Last Song on DVD). If given one of his books to read I would definitely read them. I have tons of books in my house waiting to be read so I try not to go out and seek out books, unless I am making a purchase online for my kids and want to build up my purchase enough to get free shipping.
People do toss their cast-offs to me and I have yet to have a Nicholas Sparks book thrown my way, but I would take it and read it.

I read one book by this author which I really enjoyed. The title is 'A bend on the Road'. Maybe that you'll find that more satisfying because it wasn't created to fit Hollywood or any of its actors. But I would have to admit, I haven't read any other novels written by him.

Hi there! I read "The Notebook" by Sparks years ago. I liked it alot. Then I saw the movie, and thought it was well done, as well. I don't care much for Miley Cyrus so won't bother with her movie. In general I don't like books that are written after the movie. I was thinking of reading the sequel to "The Notebook", but don't think I'll bother now. Thanks for the tip...

I love all of them although they're all tragic. I sometimes hate the endings especially that of "A walk to remember" how I wish she didn't die. I really feel sad in the ending of "The Last Song", I wish they had more time to spend with each other. They're tragic but beautifully done.

I think that Nicolas Spark's books are just too sad. From some other books I've read I've noticed sometimes an author stops writing well after they've written a really good book, It's really annoying, but I think that might be what happened in Nicholas Spark's books
