Would you rather stay friends or take the risk in leveling up to become lovers?

I've known a lot of people who has been secretly in love with a close friend but has chosen to keep it for the fear of losing the friendship. There are cases that the feeling is mutual and once they find it out, they end up lovers. On the other hand, there are cases that once everything has been revealed, the friendship wears out and they would end up being strangers.
If you're in that situation, which one would you choose? Stay friends and forever keep it? or take the risk and reveal it?

If it was me I would stay friends forever. However I would be a friend with benefits. I have knows a lot best friends who would get together than break up two months later. Although they may have been best friends for years, it just didn't work out.
