What Other Countries Think Of Us?

I was wondering what the truth was about what people in other countries think of Americans. All we seem to hear about here is that everyone hates us, everywhere. I have a hard time believing that's true.

Of course it is not true. Some people are prejudiced against Americans (where I live there is a stereotype that Americans are not so educated and rarely speak another language than English for instance) but that does not mean that they hate them in any way. I personally have nothing against Americans and would even want to live in the US for a year or two, just to have tried it. And where I live, most people think like this to be honest!

Good to know!
I have to say, in my experience..i hardly know anyone that speaks another language than English. I'm going to venture so far as to say that's a pretty spot on portrayal. The school system has been picking up with teaching languages but I feel it's not pushed nearly enough.

While staying in the U.S. for a summer I've noticed that most Americans speak only English, a few speak Spanish and a few claim to speak Spanish but have no idea.

I forgot to say something about the poor education in U.S.A. I have had friends and colleagues who moved with the family to U.S.A. when they were still young. When enrolled in school they had to take some knowledge tests. All of the friends that I know were put in advanced classes or skipped one or two grades. For example, my former school mate Alice moved to U.S.A. after finishing 5th grade. After taking the test she was considered to be at the level of a 7th grade student so she skipped 6th grade. Another friend, Monica, went to study language and literature at a university, leaving her studies in Romania behind. She used to study the same thing. She is highly appreciated there and one of the top students, always receiving praise an how intelligent and hardworking she is. And have in mind that she has two jobs so she can afford tuition.

Anyways, to answer your question, I'd say Americans are hated because:
1. they are stupid
2. American government wants to rule the world.
And now, so I make it clear, I don't hate Americans, I had the time of my life while in U.S. and wished I could stay forever. People where very sweet and thoughtful, but then, yet again, maybe because they were ignorant.
However, don't forget: "Ignorance is bliss".

We're stupid?
All of us?
Every single citizen of this country is stupid?
Have you met us all?
OH you haven't?
Now who's ignorant.

I think that the question is difficult and complex. Many times people don´t separate a country´s external politics with the people who live in the country. The United States is such a big country that has many cultures inside it. It is difficult to say that anyone hates the US meaning every person that lives there. Whoever says that does not truly know a bit the country.
I´d blame hathred in lack of knowledge. Much as I don´t like at all the US government have got into my country´s politics (as when they aided Pinochet to give a coup so that socialist President Salvador Allende would go), I don´t think that the american even knew about it. In fact these have only lately been unclassified. We know about it but the americans didn´t. For many people it is hard to separateone thing from the other.

I agree with you totally. Many people can't separate the politics/politicians from the people because leaders are seen as representing everyone in the country. As an american, i'm not even particularly fond of my government or the people in it.
