I was watching tv soaps this week and you know what is going to happen on nearly all of them before it happens,as they are soo predictable.I find that even alot of films are the same.I have noticed that all soaps try to keep you watching, as when one of them have a fire, murder etc the others soaps will do something exciting aswell.

Hey jugs! You are soooo right! They are always trying to outdo each other. I only watch General Hospital now. I gave up watching Days Of Our Lives after watching it since it started. I haven't watched it now for about five years. I finally just got sick of it. But, I will never get sick of General Hospital because I just love the cast and they always seem to make things interesting! I love Sonny and Jason is my favorite!

I watch GH too. I use to watch All My Children and One Life to Live (thanks to my grandmother who got me hooked on them) but after awhile I grew bored/tired of them. General Hospital, though, always pulls me back even if I stop watching it for a few months or more.

I have never heard of GH.The program to watch this week is supposed to be East Enders,as the pub gets burnt down,so i may have to watch that aswell as be on the pc.I only want to watch it to see if a woman called Peggy gets burnt with the pub,as her voice gets on my nerves.

I'm sorry jugs, I keep forgetting that you're in the UK! I used to watch East Enders for years! I loved that show. It's been a very long time now since I have seen it though. I think Peggy was on when I was watching it!

oh wow.. I haven't watched a soap opera in so long. I grew up watching them, (how messed up is that?) and was quite addicted in my teenage years. My mom would watch the young and the restless followed by one life to live, general hospital, and all my children. She would go so far as to record them all so she could watch them all again after the news. It's a wonder that I don't crave more drama in my life. Maybe I got enough watching it as a kid!

I do not know if you have got a soap called East Enders, but that is supposed to be good this week so people keep telling me.I think alot of the soaps are all in competition with each other,so after a while it gets boring watching them.I tend to stay on my pc rather than watching tv.

I started watching soaps as a little girl in the late 70's. By the 80's I was watching all the soaps on NBC and CBS. But by the 90's I wasn't watching any English speaking soaps. Each one had started storyline I did not like so I left and didn't come back.I started seeing telenovellas, Mexican soaps. At my peak, the 80's I couldn't predict which way the plot was going to go. When I left there was still some surprise twists but They were predicable. Each took turns having a juicy murder or rape or a huge divorce but they had a twist to it. What I like about Mexican soaps is there is a beginning, middle and end. My favorite lasted on 6 months.Everything was intense and enjoyable and then it was gone.

No There were more soaps, especially nighttime ones.On NBC there were 3 and there 4 on CBS and 4 on ABC.And then there was Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing , and Falcon Crest on at night. And even with all these , the storylines were better!

I do think that there are alot of soaps on the tv that are all fighting against each other for ratings so they have to try to get a good story line, just to keep people watching it.I think that in the past soaps were alot better as they were more entertaining,as there were not as many back in the good old days.

YEah, i do notice that as well.. As such, i'm no longer watching them.. lol =D It's getting so broing, and being able to know what's gonna happen in the finale when i'm only half way thru the the entire soaps!! haha =D The same goes for movies, whereby heroes will win, and it's nothing new. Scriptwriters are getting more and more rusty with their creativity by tapping on those popular kind of genre, rather than making their own

I'm a little bit slow on this one, I thought you were talking about bars of soap at first Anyway I would have to agree with you that some soap operas are pretty predictable because I think the competition in the TV department is tightening. It's good but sometimes it gets tiring to watch

I think that there are alot of soaps that are virtually all the same, aswell as that they are all in competition with each other.Mind you i shall be watching one soap this week as it is going to be good,so everyone keep saying and that is East Enders.

That is why I don't watch them anymore because I already know what is going to happen and how it is going to turn out. One of the worst shows is "The Bold and The Beautiful" on CBS, this show is so repetitive that I just refuse to watch it anymore. I have found so many shows that I can watch that are way better than soaps.

I watch a few shows other than soaps and they are sometimes quite good,i think that alot of soaps are so alike aswell as they are so predictable.

I guess that the repetition of plots is something that has always been when it comes to screen writing. Now that there is so much stuff on TV we are seeing the repition more and more often. When I went to a writing workshop, I realized that there were only a few main story themes and there is only variation in the characters and circumstances that they live in. Sometimes,I believe the soaps are battling it out for viewers and trying to out-do each other to get more viewers. It is interesting so see this happening, but of course there are times when it defeats its own object and becomes boring to the viewer. _Derek

I think that you are right that there are only soo many things that you can write about to keep people interested in a soap and after a while it is harder to find a good story line to keep people interested in watching it aswell.

I love watching soaps myself particularly Eastenders as well as Emmerdale and I agree, the plot always seems to be predictable! I think that there's nothing but doom and gloom in these soaps, I guess that's what makes a good story although I do like the fact that they try to bring it as close to real life as possible. I have also noticed that about Eastenders and Emmerdale! When one soap on one channel comes up with something really creative, like a huge traumatic event then there's every guarantee that another soap on another channel will follow suit! I guess they want to keep their devoted fans interested so that they don't become interested in the soap's rival or rivals! I think over the previous few weeks there have been quite a few traumatic events and I have definitely been hooked! I try not to miss an episode of Eastenders or Emmerdale, they're probably the only two soaps that I have any interest in. Andrew

LOL! I have not watched a soap opera in years. I tried to catch up on one a while back but there were so many new characters that I was scratching my head for the entire 15 minutes that I was watching. I just don't care to watch them anymore.I was sad to hear that The Guiding Light got canceled. When I did watch it was one of my favs! One thing about soaps though, along with the killing goes the affairs. I am shocked that everyone in the entire make believe town does not have some sort of VD.... they have all slept with each other at some point in time! LOL!

Lol,there are always people having affairs in the soaps aswell as having a baby and then you get a shock to find out who the father of the child is.I think that it is soo funny that there are alot of soaps that are in competition with each other, aswell as they are predictable.

Soaps are overrated, but the one thing that makes us stick to it is the intrigue. And the slapping of people, or even the plot of ultimate comeuppance of the antagonist at the last episode. But it's the truth.

I think that alot of soaps are in competition with each other and if there is a murder on one soap soon after there is another murder on another soap.

a lot of soaps tend to follow each other i find,if there is a murder in one then garenteed there will be a murder in one of the others,i used to watch the soaps all the time, but over the last few months i've barely watched them

This week i will have to watch East Enders in the hope that Peggy will burn with the pub,as her voice grates on me,also she can not act to save her life.I think that there are alot of things on the tv that are so predictable,so there is no fun in watching them.

Yes, they definitely keep us tuned in for their next episode. They do seem to be mostly predictable, yet in some ways if we miss a show or part of an episode, we can usually manage to catch up the next time it airs. Partly because it somehow sort of seems as if we didn't miss viewing the previous program. (Perhaps because in a lot of ways they ARE so predictable!) But on the one and only soap I watch, which is Days of Our Lives (here in the US) and I guess you guys get it in the UK too, Sammi shot EJ this past week and I SO did NOT see that coming. Even tho' I guess she DID have many good reasons to do the deed! *lol* Take care, firefox333

I think that it is very rare that a soap is unpredictable,so some of them i find rather amusing.Mind you saying that i will be watching East Enders this week to see if Peggy burns down with the pub, as her voice gets on my nerves and she is not a very good actor.

i agree that most soaps are indeed predictable,,, ^^ here, no matter how they twist the story, you'll just seem to know whats next, maybe they need to make something new,,, hehehehehe,,, even in reality shows, you'll know who will come out as a winner,,, ^^

I think that the shows that have 5 people in them like the contest shows where people are singing you know who is going to be the winner, which i think is really sad.Alot of the time i am multi tasking by being on my pc aswell as watching the tv,knowing what is about to happen on a program is just funny.

Well, it is True though that the soaps as well as a lot of the other shows that are on all of the time try to keep things exciting and hopping and so they tend to use an idea that worked somewhere else as well. Might be a Murder, or maybe someone becomes famous, etc. If you watch them all the time in time they will all become somewhat predictable even. But hey if they can continue to keep these exciting and full of suspense that only keeps you coming back as well.

Hi! jugs this response is quite lat but i just want to share my opinion. You know i don't really watch soaps because i find them exaggerated and unrealistic. You are right, you know what will happen to every scenes already and stories are sometimes copied from other films. Villains are really bad that i think it is impossible to find such bad person in reality. There is also a lot of violence like spanking, killing etc. They can influence young minds.

That is actually TRUE! some of the scenes are already predictable to the extent that it is really expected of what going to happen on next. At least the May Bukas Pa was been unpredictable that people where surprised of what happened in the end. You see? as what I've heard half of the Philippines are watching the ending of that series. Hoping that there will be a movie like that. It is predictable in the sense that you would know that the main star will win and the villain will lose the game.

I think the one where as you have a few people that could have killed a person,is also soo predictable and yet i even sit and watch the soap to see if i was right. You are right and in the soaps that it seems one soap is in competition with another soap to see what ratings they get, lol.

I do not care to look at soap operas, I never liked, but I've seen is one in my life, but what bothers me most is that when you get to follow a soap opera, this is very long chapters and spend as usual or are the same, and the worst is that when you start approaching the final stretch, and stretch the stretch, a slump. Then it is as you say, all are equal, the same plots and soap operas.

Indeed, but at the same time, that's what makes it nice. Good guys will always triumph at the end of it. It's not the ending which makes the soap nice, it's the process. How it carries the whole soap throughout, bringing each screen smoothly, with lots of twist in the plots. I don't mind being predictable so long the soap is able to keep my interest growing?? That's something important, i must say.
