living with the poor

I was riding a local transport yesterday and I was near the driver and could overhear the conversation he had with another passenger. They were talking politics and politicans/government officials and I got interested in a passive way.
Until the driver said that the big politicians, particularly those who sit in high positions and issue policies that touch the general mass, never will know and understand what it is like to be poor and therefore would never come up with policies that would truly benefit the poor, never having lived the life of the poor.
The practical wisdom of the "lowly." I remember my volunteer days when we were told that to truly know and understand the poor, we have to put one foot in into their lives, to be with them and live with them to know what it is like to be poor.
Do you think the rich and big politicians and government officials can live a week or two in the urban or rural poor areas to know what these poor truly need?

hi figurativeme, perhaps only some of the rich and powerful politicans can do that. I'm not so sure about those in the Philippines but I do know that both Prince William and Prince Harry of UK has done their spot of digging their heels in with the poor and needy.
But even then, I am not sure if it is truly gutter living for them or they still have their creature comfort despite the surroundings.
But I do know there are indeed some philanthropists and politicians in my community who do help in major ways as they have rose through the ranks of life.

Hi Carpediem. What an inspiring thought to have leaders like the ones you mentioned. The philanthropists and politicians who truly help don't get much recognition or perhaps do get recognized in a limited way. Too bad because they could be models. And those politicians who are at the top is in the position and authority to do more but misses this blessed opportunity. Tsk!
Thanks for your sharing.

Nope I don't think that they can because they would just not be able to take it because they are so used to their rich life that a change like that would oprobably not be good for them, but yeah they would not be able to take it will who knows maybe some have the will, but then again I don't really know so yeah. Still that is an interesting thought right there I actually never thought about that.

Me too. It was the driver's talk that got me, too. Shows us that experience is still the best source of knowledge...whether direct or indirect. Which you don't get (that is, the experience) just by sitting inside the four walls of the office.
Thanks for your response.

The politicians and the corrupt bureaucratic machinery that supports the Government are squarely responsible for promoting poverty, widening economic disparity and creating the resulting crisis in the society. The policies and rules that are framed by them have very little relevance with the practical reality of life of the poor; those are mainly directed to protect and support the affluent section of the society.Simply staying with the poor for a brief period will not serve to solve the problem and change their attitude. We need to carefully elect righteous and virtuous people with proven track record of humanitarian service to hold important political and official posts . Thanks.

Hi Narayan! Those are my sentiments, too. It could be difficult to look for righteous and virtuous people in this time of year and age. I've known friends who used to work for NGOs and shifted to government employment. Some got sucked into the system and others left disgusted. Thanks for your response.

there are other politicians who were poor once.
but people change even with those people who had actually had cross phased from poor to rich. i doubt they will take their chances. some will do it, only for the sake of getting votes from the people.
being poor is everywhere. and for my case, where getting really close to almost being poor because of the budget that we use to pay the bills.

Hi! I believe there are politicians who were once poor but moved up and ending with government positions. They may eved had been idealistic when they entered politics but got caught in the system and swam with the tide. It could really be difficult to go against the flow.
Thanks for your response.

I think most politicians, especially those who are greedy will never be able to live for even a day with the poor. However, i do believe that there would be some politician, from poor family background that could do that and those are the politician that we really want and would support.

This is a sad reality in our soceity. We are divided by the status we have. If we will look back to were we all started, everyone is created equal. But as human nature started to seek and ask for more than what he needs, that started the problem. No more balance, those rich people tends to gain and get more, and the less fortunate are left wtih few or even worse nothing. I always pray that even if we are in the middle of all what's happening around us, there will still come a time when there will be no poor, and everything will regain it's balance. I know I might sound wishful thinking but I am still hoping against hope.

i think most politicians don't really care anyway...but not all of them. i know some of them, very few of them, haVE lived the life of a poor man... and so some of them must really know what it's like to be in the poor man's shoes..... I just hope one day , no matter how unlikely, things are going to be better......especially here

No, but I think they should. I see how hard things are for the poor people and that the government should be helping them out. I don't think poor people get a fair shake when it comes to the government.

Hi dear,
It is a never ending subject as long as human being are here. You may be aware of the human population all over the globe and the problems around. Majority of the poor are there in all countries. There are high level and rich minority society who runs the rulings and mechanism of governing are well aware of all the situations around.
The law prevailing is in appropriate and the amendments are not at all solving their problems. The changing governments and beaurocaric rules will continue and the poor section will remain forever. Because, there are a lot in number and it is not so easy to eradicate poor section anywhere from our countries.
The weal is always weak and getting exploited. This exploitation over the poor by the rich is the history of mankind. May be by wealth or intellect, it was happened and it is still going one with different names.
So remember might is power. May be it is politics or government authorities, whoever is coming into power will gradually moving into the boat and make necessary tune up for their own growth.
It is natural it is impossible to get a unity among the poor. Because they are poor and unwanted among those rich and politicians. They are telling knowledge is power. They know how to handle them and they are doing also.
It will follow forever. Because, they are sitting on so high and top, how they will reach to to do something against.
Regards,
Thank-s

Hello!
I think the rich and big politicians can't live at least 1 day in the poor areas! They have money and they can't understand what means living with less money. They want their big cars, their big houses, they want to not be disturbing by anyone(a kids or a dog)...they want everything!

This is precisely why I took an interest in the Presidential campaign of Manny Villar. He was able to accomplish in one generation what many here dream of and don't you consider his family ethics aspirational?
While others were handing out wristbands, he was criticized for handing out 20 piso bills diba?

Not all are fortunate enough to have wealth, but many people do not wish to be rich, they are simple people who do not care about money and wealth, they are living their lives in a full hapiness. Living with them is not an issue, its a good experience learning that people are not in the same status and you will be amaze how they live their lives on daily basis. And they are satisfied of what they have and donot care if they live in that status .
