What drives a mother to harm her child?

I just read an article about a mother, Carlotta Pierce, who hit her severely malnourished child with a CD box then tied her to the bed and forced her to take sleeping pills. What did the child do wrong? She raided the refrigerator for a midnight snack and making a mess in the kitchen. The child died later. As a mother, I find this story really sad. Yes, kids can be messy but that is not a excuse for a mother to hit him or her. Here is the link to the story.
