I've not heard that saying to be honest....But what I get from it is a bit of negativity towards yourself as a person low self esteem...

not sure how that is but ok.
it is more like if you hang around people that try to help others be a good person etc. then part of that rubs on to you and you try to be more like that. now if you hang out with peole that are theives, liars etc you take on a bit of those types as well. if you hang out with party people you tend to party. so there for you will never be better then those you hang out with. people tend to do what those around them do. you tend to hang out with people cause you have common interrest. etc etc

I've heard of a similiar saying, "Who you choose to let in your life lets you know who you are!" I don't think it has to do with if you're better than anyone else. I think it has to do with people of likeness tend to come together, weather it's based on ideas, personalities, beliefs, etc etc etc...

Very interesting - my boss and I were just discussing this the other day. I do believe that people can become better than the people they hang out with but it is very very difficult. Negative attitudes tend to breed negative attitudes and if that's all a person is around it is going to be next to impossible to develop a positive attitude. Our discussion was in relationship to teens hanging around with 'the wrong crowd' and the group mentality effecting others.

I think it is true for the most part.. That's why in "cliques" everyone seems to act the same and have a lot in common.
Peer pressure is also a big part of it.. If you hang out with people who are robbing banks and whatnot, your probably going to end up doing some bad things.. Not for sure, but often that does happen. If you hang out with people like that your judgment is clearly way off.
If you know your a good person, your instinct would be to surround yourself with people like yourself who do good things, help others, etc.
