Do You Agree There Should Be NO Protests or Rallies on 9/11?

A coalition of prominent 9/11 leaders, including the co-founders of the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance movement have asked that both proponents and opponents of the proposed community center and mosque in NYC refrain from holding any protests or rallies on September 11, 2010. I saw one gentleman, David Paine, on TV the other day and he feels this one day should be reserved for the families and friends of the victims, giving them a chance to reflect and grieve without having salt rubbed into their wounds by these proposed events. He also said it would be a good idea of all political campaigning could be suspended for that one day, as both President Obama and GOP nominee Senator John McCain agreed to do in 2008.

I agree; there are 364 remaining days in a year, there's no reason we can't stop all the division and nastiness for that one solemn day. Those who signed the letter sent to both organizations planning rallies involving the proposed mosque made it clear they were not endorsing the project by doing so, they simply think any protests or rallies, for or against, could be left for another day.
What do you think?

I strongly disagree. It was the American way of life the terrorists were trying to destroy. Protesting Is the American Way. Let's face it if it weren't for a few men protesting a tax on tea we would still be part of the British Empire! It is all about 9/11 If they don't protest, regardless of sides, then the terrorists have won.

I fully agree that they shouldn't be protesting. I just hope some moron trying to score points doesn't push legislation that would ban it. Everyone has the right to protest whenever they want, I just want them to have enough respect for the victims to not do it that day.

I agree as well and I'm sorry I didn't make this more clear in my OP. I don't want any kind of legislation banning protests on that or any other day, period. I know you can't legislate morality or pass a law making us respect others but if enough people speak up maybe they could be shamed into it!
Because something is a "right" doesn't mean that it's RIGHT!

This date should be one of honor and remembrance for the fallen ones. it should not be a time for protests, rsllies or or other radical issues just to bring attention your way. We shouls have enough dignity for those taken not to blacken their memories with disrespect.

...Hi annie, Hope you are well. There is so much controversy these days over the Mosque, the center, build it, don't build it. My feeling would be to let the families who were affected that day do what they wish, it should be scacred and not used as a protest day. Why mar the day with signs against this, that or the other. They all should have a little respect for the feelings of the families involved. Doing the protesting and marching on another day or date would be the right thing to do. Take care.

I do not believe that protests and rallies should not be allowed on September 11. In fact, I do believe that they should be tolerated provided that physical violence does not ensue. 9/11 was a tragic event that affected the lives of many Americans and internationals as well. The protesters are simply voicing out their opinions on what they believe should or should not be done, in honor of those who lost their lives on that day.

Well said. I can't even imagine how horrible it would be to lose a loved one on that day, but to have it politicized by both sides year after year has to be even more unbearable. Those people need and deserve some peace especially on the anniversary of the attacks.

I agree. I remember on that horrible day when the Senators and House members all gathered on the steps of the Capitol and sang "God Bless America". For what now seems like a few brief moments we truly were united, we were all simply Americans. Of course, we'll always have our differences, and that's fine and to be expected, but let's just "can it", as you said, for that one day.

I remember how the world stopped turning that day for so many...how we were all glued to our television sets, how too many worried about their loved ones and how the entire country mourned. I think this day should always be a day of reflection and remembrance so, yes, everything else needs to be put on the back burner.

I don't think there's been another day in my life that I remember so well, from beginning to end, just like it was yesterday. I had a few hours of near panic because my sister-in-law had worked in the World Trade Center for awhile and I wasn't sure if she was still there or not. As it turned out, she wasn't but she was in NYC and ended up stranded there for a couple days. My brother was out of his mind for several hours because he couldn't get through to her on the phone until the afternoon. My heart aches to this day for all those people who didn't get good news that day!

No! It's been 9 years now, lots has happened in that time frame, we've all formed our views (sorta) sure peace is patriotic, but so is allowing Americans their freedom to express themselves.

I fully agree with you on this point. All must commemorate on that day all those who lost their lives. The day should be reserved exclusively for mourning.
