I noticed that most people who responded to this topic are Muslims. So I will give an outsider's opinion of Islam. I don't know what Islam is for sure, but from the actions of many many Muslims it is not a religion of peace. You've got terrorist all over the world going around killing people just because they're not Muslim. In places like Iran and other Middle Eastern countries women are raped, and then they are blamed for their own rape, and killed. Muslims all over say it's a religion of peace. Those are extremists. They don't represent us. But then the schools and churches teach their people to be terrorists. I've read the Koran and it says some very violent things against non Muslims.
Having said all that I am open minded, and I am willing to have faith that there are Muslims out there who are peaceful people. That don't wish harm on anyone, and just want to be left alone. The problem is that they don't stand up against the fanatics. They just repeat that's not us. If it's not you then stop them. It's up to Muslims to change the world's perspective on Islam. To show people that you're a peaceful religion like you say you are. Just imagine that you're the outsider. You see these people of Islam all over the world blowing people up, capturing people and beheading them. Innocent people. We're not talking some government that did something to them, like they always claim. Twin towers for example. 3,000 innocent people from all over the world murdered.
I'm not calling anyone here a terrorist. I do not know you. I will go by what you say about yourselves being peaceful. But understand that the image the world has of you is bad. And the people that say nice things all the time are only afraid. It would be nice if this killing could stop. We could respect each others beliefs, and live in peace.

Fair enough. It's possible that what I read was the wrong text, and that I have been misinformed. But I don't think Muslims need to show non Muslims what Islam is all about alone. I think they need to make sure that each other really knows what it's about. Maybe it is a religion of peace. But there are so many out there showing the world differently. Some of Islams most highly regarded spiritual leaders today, are terrorists. I hope that Muslims like yourself, and the others that have spoken here can change things. People are tired of all the stupid fighting. Maybe it's for some reason. Something that happened between someone long ago, but that was them, and not us. We should all be able to live together in peace.

About guiding 'misguided' Muslims, where I am the Muslim community is actively participating. Other countries have come to our seminars. One such organization is RRG - Religious Rehabilation Group.
About terrorism, living here in peace has made me forget about our Muslim brothers and sisters in Palestine. That is not something that happened a long time ago. It is ongoing now. I believe this is your part to do your bit for peace also.
As long as there is war between Muslims and non Muslims, there will be terrorism. Terrorism does not come from Muslims, it comes from non Muslim also.

Thanks for your contribution, I want you to know that your post is very much appreciated.
I beleive the Muslims who want to build a mosque near ground zero is doing just that. They want non Muslims to see what Islam is all about. The approach is slow however because the act of 9/11 is a much of a surprise to the majority of Muslims. I beleive that they choose this time to build the mosque because it is this time that they have gathered enough support.
To what you have written about abuse of women. There are all kinds of people in this world therefore Iran is not excluded. There are all kinds of abuse done to women not exclusive to Muslim countries. Muslims are humans and they are also prone to err.
About what you have read in the Quran on violent things against non Muslims, I advise you to seek authencity of the text that you have read. What my religious teacher has taught us (us because i attended the lessons with 50-60 of others) when you are seeking knowledge is that you have to be careful not to seek from a wrong source.
And about standing up to the fanatics, i believe there are more and more of us doing that. Again the approach is slow because the fanatics come out as a surprise and sadly you are right about us being afraid because they are the ones with power. However i see more and more Muslims standing up for Islam because Islam has meant so many wonderful things to Muslims and we are sick and tired of people misunderstanding Islam.
We choose to change the view of Islam by starting this discussion and telling non Muslims what Islam is all about instead of ..maybe calling a rich uncle to place a bomb in the fanatics home. Surely you see that is not a peaceful approach?

Peace be upon all,
Before I start I would like to state that this is my personal opinion based on what I believe and what I choose. I have no intention to say bad things about other religions or something like that. Again, this is only my personal opinion as a person that believes in Islam.
According to my opinion, Islam is a religion that carries peacefulness and happiness to people around the world. The "Holy Qur'an" itself contains life lessons both for physical and spiritual that we can learn for both living on Earth and living on after-life someday.
It was a very great religion and it grew very big, until some of its followers did not learn it properly, misunderstood what spoken and taught, and as you see right now, that people sometimes see Islam as a religion of terrorizm or something like that.

Yes I agree, because one of soul's basic laws is to seek the truth. When bad events happened and people heard it was Moslem's, those who are open minded conduct a search and learn more about Qur'an, and they found the contradiction (Qur'an always states that we keep good relationship to everyone even with different religions, the only thing we must not share is the ritual and prayer), but those "therorists" said "We Moslems must destroy other religions!"
So, it's clear enough that Islam never teaches such behavior. Only misguided people can be turned.

Yes sadly so but ironically, the bad events has made more people to be aware of Islam. The ones who are open see the difference between being a Muslim and Islam as a perfect religion.

Salam.
Understanding Islam as I aged makes me feel grateful that I am a Muslim and that I am a Woman. It is overwhelming to know how Islam value women as persons of dignity. Despite the negative image and connotations that some people had brought to my religion, I am still appreciative of such "attempts" because from which I can say that I belong to the present Muslim generation who are secured of their own faith. Peace Out! :)

Hello folks,
I have a question regarding Islam. Actually I had quite a few muslim friends back in my school days, and it is from them, I had first came to know about something that I found really strange, and disturbing. No offence meant.I was just a kid you see, blissfully ignorant of all the complexity of the society I was living in ! Anyway, here's my question. It no longer matters much to me, but I am curious to know anyway.
Is it true that for a muslim, his loyalty towards Islam is more important than his loyalty towards the nation?
I am curious because I was told about it by a muslim himself. And again I repeat, I didn't mean to offend anyone.

dear friend. if its nation is muslim nation and himself a muslim that means if the ennemy enter to his lands (just small example :) ) so the loyalty is becoming at the same degree for the both things. islam and nation. but if the nation was not a muslim one. then the loyalty towards islam is the first because its related to your Allah ( the one god ).
peace my friend

Hi rustyhalo and ProudMuslimGirl,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I pondered upon the points both of u made, especially the ones made by you-ProudMuslimGirl. I must say, indeed a nice presentation of your point of views. Applauses for that!
But hey, if you don't mind helping me to kill another curiosity of my confused mind, more than a few decades back, in the mid '80s to be precise, the head of my country proposed a "population control" program keeping in view of all the problems the (unwanted) enormous growth in population could bring along for the nation. But that program was so strongly opposed by the muslim leaders (stating it against the laws of islam)that the program never took off. The results today are there for all to see. A victim of over population, in the absence of which, the country would have progressed a lot faster than it is doing right now. How do u explain that? That was a direct conflict between religion and the interests of the nation, and muslim leaders and a majority of our muslim friends decided to stick with religion abandoning the interests of their "native land".
Thaks again for participating in the discussion. Have a wonderful day :) \PEACE/

Hi superbug,
You have to be more clear about what you are talking about. For instance, where was this, what was the proposed method of population control, etc? Muslims know that marriage is encouraged in Islam for many reasons, one is for procreation. Too many people on this planet is not the problem. It is how the people use the resources of this world. Allah is Most Merciful and provides for every human. Every human has the right to be born. And if it is the will of Allah that a certain person be born, then no matter how many precautions a person takes, that person *will* be born, no matter what. And yes, a Muslim's loyalty is first to Allah and His Prophet, and then to others. On the Day of Judgement, we will be accountable to Allah, not some human.

I remembered my history class, Islam came first before the Spaniards. If the Spaniards did not invade the Philippines and given Roman Catholicism to Filipinos, Islam would have continued to propagate throughout the whole Philippines. Muslims in Mindanao resisted Spaniard invasion.

I think Muslims have gotten a bad wrap over the last few years. My opinion is that they are a peaceful people and religon. I don't have a problem with the beliefs of Islam, and I wish that people wouldn't rush to judgement on someone based on Muslim extremists.
