I prefer norton antivirus over all the others but if you wanna know a antivirus which uses less processing then Kaspersky is the best. It uses less processing, it is damn cheap compared to the others and it is damn good and safe for the computer. It won't allow any harmful object to enter unless you yourself give the command to it. It asks whenever an harmful object is detected.

@nikhil, if you have used Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, then you would not have written this.
In fact, this time, my most trusted anti-virus program consumes much more resources than norton. Till Internet Security 2009, its was one of the best and lightest anti-virus program, but since 2010, it has become much more heavy.
I'm currently on Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 and i feel its consumes more resources but i'm not concerned with this thing. I can compromise with a little performance over security for my computer as security is much more important for me. And its the best anti-virus program which i've used.
But for slow computers, kaspersky 2010/2011 should be avoided.

Yeah, its slow even my computer. But i've written that for slower pc, Kaspersky should be avoided.
Fast pc can easily struggle with Kaspersky over performance issue but slow pc would just die in running it.

If you want an anti-virus which is low on resources, then try Microsoft's Security Essentials or Panda Cloud Anti-virus.
These are free anti-virus solutions available for you.
But if you want a paid one, then i think Norton Internet Security has improved a lot in terms of performance and consuming less resources. I've used Norton Internet Security 2010 and my verdicts for this anti-virus is 9/10.
So, you can try this also.

If you are using avast free version or any free versions of an anti virus then you are not 100% protected from any virus. Only paid versions of anti virus system can help you protect your system to almost 100%. I have been using Bitdefender 2010 for almost 2 years now since I switched from Kaspersky. All I can say is that I haven't got any virus related problems and it did not affect much of my system either. I have 4GB memory though.
