Are you afraid of surgery?

My aunt recently had a health scare. She thought she might have Ovarian Cancer. Luckily the tests came out negative however her doctor is still recommending surgery because she's developing a lot of tumors and she has a history of cysts. She has been going back and forth about getting the surgery. It's not necessary but it could be preventive, especially since my family has a history of cancer. It killed my grandmother and grandfather, my great aunt had breast cancer and my uncles have had cancer as well. However, the idea of cancer scares her which surprises most of us since she has had surgery before. When she was younger she got a nose job. Then there were a few other operations that have gone smoothly. But now she is terrified. Are you afraid of surgery? Why or why not? How would you advice my aunt?

I've only had two procedures done in my life where I was put out. One was an eye surgery to correct my vision at age 2. I was born cross eyed and had to have it corrected. Than, last year I had my wisdom teeth taken out. I was referred to an oral surgeon because I told them I wanted to be put out and have all of them taken out at once. I didn't want to see or hear anything. While, I don't remember the first procedure...I remember the second one. So I didn't have to be put out and it's not the same surgery as if I had to have something corrected or fixed. I remember being nervous, but I just wanted to have it over and done with. I went in, they wired me up, put the blood pressure bit on my arm, and put an IV in. In less than 5 minutes I could feel myself getting tired and the next thing...it feels like a few moments later...I was waking up. It was about an hour, but I just remember feeling groggy and having to take it easy the next few days after. I think it's normal for surgery to make someone nervous, but it can be for the better. They make sure that you are out if needed the whole procedure. On the other hand, I would be a little hestiant if I had to awake for surgery...example...laser eye surgery.

I have had oral surgeries as well, a time or two. My dentist does not do extractions, so my last wisdom teeth had to be removed. I also had a failed root canal that resulted in a procedure called an apicoectomy, I guess I am the type that even if I am nervous, I would rather get the problem and the pain taken care of as soon as possible, so it does not get worse.

Yes definetely i hate surgery i even during small surgery during my hand being cut and have to stitch back i need to look at the wound and see the procedure, the unknown is more painful for me hence i have to stare at the procedure. I guess if surgery better for me to be knock off even in the waiting room.I hate unplanned journey and such this include surgery i guess.

I will admit that I'm afraid of surgery no matter what a brave front I put up. If I were your aunt, I'd wait. She can have tests done as often as she feels they're needed, but if she doesn't have cancer, invasive surgery may cause tumors to grow when they otherwise wouldn't. It's been shown that some cancers do better left alone, so unless there is at least proof of cancer, I wouldn't have anything done. Unless, of course, she's in pain because of them.

i do not like the issue of having a surgery at all. I have heard first hand tales from people who have had it around me and i have come to know that it is not a lovely procedure. It is just a last resort. For the case you have discussed above, i dont think she is scared of the procedure but of the cancer itself seeing that she has had surgery before. Her fear may stem from the fact that cancerous cells have a way of developing again even after a surgery

I am afraid of surgery.......Back in 07 I lost my third baby and had to be rushed into a c section to get her out.....She was a stillborn.....Then a couple of years later I had to get my gull bladder out I went through with it because I was very sick and I was scared....I think that I would just ask what your Aunt is scared about and try and listen...

Surgery can always be a terrifying experience and its but natural to get scared. A lot of risk is involved when undergoing a surgery, the patient might go into shock, or the anesthesia may cause unexpected harm etc. So the best solution is that near and dear ones help the patient out, support and encourage that individual and make him/her feel good.

No, I am not afraid of surgery, and I have had a hysterectomy and my ovaries removed. I was not going to have them removed but there was a lot of scar tissue and endometriosis. Your aunt may be afraid that they will find cancer if they open her up. If so, she needs a second opinion. She probably needs a second opinion anyway.Besides that surgery, I have had a bunion removed and a partial joint replacement in my big toe. I also had an infected lymph node removed. In all of those cases the problem had become a source of frequent pain and discomfort, and I was ready to be done with it and get my life back on track.

To be very frank, I just shudder whenever I hear the word "surgery"! The word itself just brings to mind all those stainless steel knives used for surgery, pain, blood and anaesthetics (although I know not all surgeries use or have them ). I have only been through one surgery in life, and I probably won't go into much detail about it since it is a little embarassing to talk about it.... but one thing is for sure, it still felt painful even with all the local anaesthetics injected (ps: even when the anaesthetics were injected it was excruciatingly painful)! But thank goodness the surgery was successful and I was in much less pain than when I first started. Not really sure how to advise your aunt, but probably I would tell her that if her quality of life after surgery could be better than what it is now, why not? But of course, she needs to be told the chance of surgery success before making the decision to go for one.......

Yes, I am, not unless I'll be under general anesthesia. There are different types surgery procedure. It could be a small surgery that doesn't need anesthesia or it could be large surgery that surely needs general anesthesia. ;p
