My daughter has been on a quest to find a job and, as all of you know, these are tough times. She has put in applications at numerous resturants and department stores onlt to be met with disappointment. She wants a car and I told her that if she couldn't pay for insurance...which is very expensive...then I wouldn't but her a car. OK...she goes to an interview with a friend that has over 300 applicants and they called her today! She got the job! As an actor at a haunted house.....well....I'm so excited for her because her new job is going to be a blast! I wish I could have got a "fun" job at that age. I am looking forward to her actor's meeting on the 17th. So would you let your teenage daughter work in a haunted house? Would you be supportive of a fun seasonal job? Tell me what you think.

Sure! I'll be excited for her as well. It's not everyday that you or anyone you know gets a shot at an acting career. That's a nice thing.

I was going to say isn't this only seasonal but I see you've answered that question for me by saying seasonal. Is it just a month's worth or is it longer then that? It seems exciting, and I am happy for her. Is she getting a fair amount of money for it? This should be a good foot in the door for other places as well! Goodwill industries could give her job training...
I actually have an interview at a goodwill store in a few days!

The store locations don't offer it but the bigger buildings with a bigger store do. There's one about forty five minutes drive from here so I'd say.. eh... 6 hours from you!!! LOL. One friend I know got training to help people with resumes, that was kind of cool I thought.

She was actually hoping for a job at the local humane society but she has to be 18. She works there on and off volunteer. Her thing is to be a nurse or a doctor but we take what we can at the moment..lol...the haunted house will be fun I think.

This does sound interesting, and sounds like it could be Fun. Even though I personally do not Celebrate Halloween per sey something like this could lead to many other wonderful things for your daughter if she chooses to pursue them. And hey if it is somewhere that they are safe, and good supervision why not? It will be Great work experience and I am sure a lot of Fun in the process. Do you get a discount?

It sounds like a great fun job with a difference! I would let my daughter do it, it sounds as though she did extremely well getting the position out of 300 applicants! You must be so proud of her! What an interesting job to include in your CV; you never know what it may lead to…I can certainly appreciate that this was not the job you thought she was going to end up with! I think it’s terrific, congratulations to your daughter, hope she enjoys her new occupation and the start to an acting career!

That's great news Jen,
Sounds like an interesting job. Has she been told what exactly she will be doing?. I would not have a problem with what my daughter did (within reason) as long as she was enjoying it.

Yes, if my daughter wanted to do it I would let her. I think that teens enjoy those types of jobs more than adults do and she will have fun. Let's hope she makes enough money to pay for her insurance.

Cool!
Seasonal is a start.
At 16, I had a job making sandwiches for vending machines.Standing on my feet on cement stores for hours. This sounds like a lot more fun. She beat out 300 people? Is she scary or beautiful (like a damsel in distress) or a really good screamer, or what?

First of all, congratulation to both you and your daughter! Sure it's difficult, but I am happy that she could finally find a job!
Well, if you ask me, as long as the job brings positive values (e.g. not forbidden by law or religion, not impacting health, etc) I believe I will not say no. As parent we have to be supportive to our son/daughter, as it will help them stand strong and survive.

I think that is great! I think a seasonal "fun" job would be a terrific start to her working "career". I would be very supportive if my kids got a job like that. It is her first job, so this would be a great start for her. I had to laugh when I read your discussion, my kids would be great at a job like that. They all love halloween and I could see all 3 of them working at a haunted house. You will have to give us an update and let us know how she is enjoying the job.

Hi,
First I would like to say congratulation to
your daughter for getting a job. At least, she will be busy with
her job and earn some income.
Since she is still young, let her explore more to outside the
world and let her experience the society life.
Give her an encouragement and support her mentally.

now ,you should know it is very difficult to find a job you are satisfied..
if children find a job with a lot of difficulties ,and think the job is not so bad ,so what they need is family's support ,if they are happy ,i have no disagreement

Hi there Jen,
Your daughter must be one good little actress! That is awesome! Yes, I would be very proud and supportive if my daughter landed a job like that. It sounds like a lot of fun! How often does an opportunity like that come around after all? And who knows what other opportunities it may lead to.

Well a job is a job! It would be job experience to put on her resume to seek other employment when the haunted house shuts down. It's hard to get your first job, I know when I was that age I filled out more applications and several interviews than I could remember til I finally got hired. Plus, right now she may be able to get her foot in the door @ a retailer even if it was just for the holiday season. It would be more experience and if she does her job well they may keep her on. GL to her!

I hear you. If it's not a layoff here there's contract talks with some union or another to keep jobs here. There are jobs here a 16yo could do the only problem like you said there are too many people competing for those jobs.... As people don't have any choice when their unemployment runs out.

She has had a tough time finding anything. She had been looking and turning in apps for months. Times are really hard here as far as the job front goes. I thought things were picking up for a while and then boom...another big lay off is announced. She is having a great time with it. Thanks for responding.

Yeah, I'd let her. Although I'd be worried about some customers acting obnoxious. A friend of mine who worked at Knott's Berry Farm for Halloween (Knott's Scary Farm) in costume, ran into some really obnoxious teenagers who hassled her.

They asked her if she would be able to take it she was trying to scare someone and they acted as though it didn't bother them. She said she would just wait to scare someone else..lol..I hope there aren't any obnoxious people to ruin it for her.

Hiya Jen,
If I thought it seemed safe enough yes why not. It´s only a temporary Job is´nt it so hy not let her enjoy the experience? Who knows what it might lead to in the Future? I would be supportive yes. Sounds like a great deal of fun too.
Will she be on the Television in over there? If so you will have to tell us so we can see it.

Hiya Jen,
Whatever it is would love to be able to see it. Maybe on youtube I guess. She must be feeling really thrilled to be in something like that I know that I would be.
One Job like that could lead to another and another.

I had a job like that, but I didn't get to dress up... It was called being the BOSS.
I think it sounds like great fun, AND right after Halloween comes Thanksgiving and Christmas. It could turn out to be a long seasonal job and enough to pay for insurance!
