It all depends on the definition you use for "financial independence". Everyone has their own definition for being financially independent. Some consider being able to purchase all big purchases with cash alone as being financially independent. If we don't accrue much debt and pay off everything we can as soon as we can I say that's financial independence. It takes credit to get a lot of things in life. People won't look at you unless you've built some sort of credit up most of the time. That can be financial credit as in credit cards, loans, things like that. Or Job Credit as in how much you've worked but I know that is a different subject altogether. My husband and I resolve our debts as soon as possible, and we always pay bills on time. We've not had any real debts actually. Now before I met him I did go into debt but we've not and don't intend to go into debt.

Good points, SomeCowgirl! I didn't even think about that, but of course you are right, our definitions regarding this are highly individual.

yeah... i understand... but when i talke dabout financial independnece here i talk about being free from debts, having savings account, having your own house, having money to pay the bills, making food available all the time, and take note... a refrigerator with a food inside.. then having a paid car, with money to pay for the gas.. :) being abel to pay the kids school everytime its examination time... to live outside of ur paretns house if single.. :)

puccagirl, yes but it also makes for a very lengthy and interesting discussion, if not small argument! ree_yah, I understand your definition of financial independence and respect it as well as understand it, I believe we all strive to be financially independent like that, or atleast I know my husband and I do.

I wish we were. I doubt you will find a lot of financially independent people here on mylot or wealthy people so to say as we are all working to make extra money, well at least mostly anyways. We are financially stable I will put it that way. We can pay our bills and manage to put a little away every month and still have a little extra money for fun stuff. However, if my husband were to lose his job we would be in trouble. We have enough in savings that we could survive on for about 6 months but after that it would start to get difficult. We could use the kids college money if we had to but I would really hate to have to do that.

Do you mean wealthy enough to not have to work on a daily basis? No I am not that well off. I wish I was, that way I could do something I enjoy every day instead of working. As for being independent enough to make my own way in life then yes I am. I am able to support myself my wife and my kids in a decent life style. We own our own home (well the bank does for about 15 more years) and our cars are paid off and we have enough for normal expenses, some savings, and some fun money, but I have to work very hard for all of that.

I'm living independently, however I can not consider myself as financially independent. I still don't have enough savings and I think it's because I can not or am not handling my finances well enough. Just last week, I attended a workshop on financial stewardship, and was reminded yet again that being financially independent does not mean having a high income or salary, but being able to manage or handle his/her own finances well. Hopefully, I get to apply what I have learned in that workshop as soon as possible because I am not getting any younger either. ^_^

How can you be jealous of people who has financial independence.....as for get the right definition of financial independence. It should probably be for someone who is like Bill Gates. Who can live on the profits from his generating wealth. Money who is working 24 hours 7 days a week. Well having that financial independence needs administrational work by someone. One important thing that money cannot buy is a human life, when you are in a health condition when it does not matter how much money you have. Money can notmake you to get well. So if you have all the money in the world and you are suffering in a life long illness I would think you did not care about the money. YOU would want to get well be healthy. Money is something in the material world, which you can have and loose in a part of a second. Being a strong healthy human being is also to be independent. If you're lucky you can have a job or have your own business. Make your living by earning money. Save money invest money and create a good life. I,myself have been suffering many years of long term illness, ptsd and exhaustions(being burnt out). I have semi-pension as income, I live in a oneroom apartment with my youngest daughter of five children my older four children are grown-ups now. I've debts trying to save money every month. I'm deeply grateful that I have a place I can call home, have food, clothes every day. I've a child, age 20 who has autism and retarded developments. I have strived hard, I still strive for him to have the necessary he needs to have a decent life. My highest wish is for him to be able to speak his heart and mind with spoken words. He communicate with pictures and body language. For me being healthy and strong the most important in life along with having enough money for having a place you can call home, have food, clothes and some extra money for leisure time together with my loved ones.

I also do not have independent finances. I am very dependent on my husband and parents. I wanted to be independent. I will try to get on my feet, I really hope someday I can be independent.
