Do not go to the food, let your food come to you

If this doesn't make sense to you, just observe this the next time you have a meal.
When you are seated at the table and start to eat, do you bend your head towards the food and hunch because of that? The correct posture should be to sit up straight and instead bring your food towards you using a spoon or fork or whatever.
Are you aware of the wrong postures you have whether you are eating, standing, sitting or sleeping? Do you want to have a good posture?

I am not aware of any posture etiquette, but this discussion just jumped out at me because tonight during dinner I ate with a kid who is a bit overweight. I kept thinking there is something wrong with this kid. When he ate, he stooped down on his plate and kept shoving food on his face. I also thought that his parents should not encourage this behavior, correct posture or not!

Oh oh, that kid really goes to the food huh, I bet he sees the food beckoning to him to come closer every time. Yeah, his parents should do something about it. If he gets obese, it will be difficult to lose all the weight again.

I used to do this all of the time growing up. It was a hard habit to break once i realized that I was still doing it later on.
I try not to slouch in my seat when at the computer, or while watching television. When a movie is on, and it's very suspenseful, I find it hard not to lean forward a bit.

Hi cbjones,
A lot of habits were cultivated when we were young and yes they are hard to break once formed. It is ironic that that's the time when sometimes we do not know what's good for us and refuse to listen to the advice of others.
When watching movies, I sometimes find myself very enthralled with it that after I recovered from a certain scene I may find myself stiff! lol.

hi moon.
i am too hurry in eating my food, i don't know why? but its my habit from my childhood. so, when i take food, i don't bow myself bcoz it seems to lazy to take food and take more time. hence, i pick up my foods and push it to my mouth sitting in a straight position. hahaha.
take care.

I think you are very efficient to do that! hahaha, I can't imagine you can eat very fast in this position, I would be careful not to spill things on my clothing.

Hiya bluemoon,
Am I aware yes, but I try to correct it and slow down and eat better. I don´t always do it but I keep trying to make it a habit to slow down a lot before I eat and that way I don´t eat so much either. Not that I eat too much ever as I don´t like that feeling full feeling. But sometimes I do give way and I am like all others eat a bit too much.
I sit up straight and make a habit of changing into more comfortable clothes too. Sometimes I don´t sit perfectly either to tell the truth. But now I don´t like rushing my meals not anymore I prefer to eat less and enjoy it more.

Hiya bluemoon,
Well I always try to keep to what I said before up there in the first response. Sometimes it just is not that easy.
Eating fresh fruit is something I have made a definite move on I eat fresh fruit every day now mostly apples because they are much cheaper and last longer also.

Hi lovinangels,
Not much to comment on the posture topic here but I have read somewhere that it is good to stop eating before we are completely full, something like 90% full? That way we won't stress the stomach and we can always eat again when we feel hungry.
It is good to eat a bit slower, chew the food more so that it is more easily digested.

Perseverance is not easy, I appreciate your efforts in doing so.
Eating fresh fruits is good, but do have a variety to ensure a balance of nutrients and vitamins.

I am usually aware of good posture but sometimes I do not take a second to think and ouch I hurt my back when stooping to quick.
As for when I eat depends where I am at if I am at home and starving I want at the plate so I have to say I do not think about posture at all. If I am a family, friend and or a restaurant I think my etiquette is on Que.

I was thinking more like bending too quickly to pick something up, as we are suppose to bend at the knees and then picking up the item then slowly standing up, but okay , too funny!

I have heard that for elderly, they are recommended to linger for a while first on their bed before getting up to get the body prepared. If they get up too fast, they might hurt themselves easily. I guess it's the same for all of us, if we turn too fast or do something suddenly, we might get hurt.

Hi cream,
Cultivating good habits is surely the first step. If you have been conscious all along, you would have seen the good results now.
Have a good day!

Hello bluemoonpavilion,
Hmmm, that would make many of us think. I guess most of us actually bend towards the food. I do that too, because i don't want to drop anything on my shirt, i am conscious of that. That is why i bend a little, but yeah that does not make a healthy posture. And i certainly don't look cool while i eat.

hahah voldrox, you made me laugh. If you bend you do not look cool. If you do not bend and drop food on your shirt, you would not look cool too, so either way you do not look cool
On a more serious note, I guess if you can be more careful while eating, the food would go to the right place and your posture would be beautiful to look at.

Everyone I think like to have a good posture. Maybe others know it and just ignore or either they don't know and not very particular. I wish to have a good posture but sometimes it's too tight to follow everything needed. So sometimes I do what is right in the right place and sometimes i don't care about it at all.

Yes, all of us knows the "correct rules", but somehow it is hard to follow when we feel like lazing around or too tired to sit up straight. Other times we can be alert and follow everything nicely.

Hello normally i sit on floor while eating, we eat using hands, no fork and spoons used, this most indians do, i feel more comfortable, but we keep our back straight, while walking also i try to remain straigt, but at 65 age, my body has started bending forward..
Thank you so much.
Professor. . Cheers have a great day ahead.

Hi Professor,
I can just imagine the picture of you having a meal. I'm more used to tables and chairs, so I would find it difficult to eat while sitting on the floor, unless it's things like bread. It is good that you remember to keep your back straight. Regardless of your age, I'm sure every effort made to correct your posture helps. Thanks for the response.

is it important to have a good posture just to eat? just eat the dam food. having a goodposture just making your self look good in everyone's eye, but you are just making fun of you self. why do it if your not comfortable to it. so eat whatever you like it. coz eating is having fun to.

Well, it's not only "just to eat" or just having good looks, we should take note of our good posture for good bone and muscle setting. If we always slouch, the bones might get crooked and we may have spinal problems or even slipped disc.

hi bluemoonpavilions when you have to eat with three tablemates and some hundred others you do beome a bit more concerned about your own posture and your own table manners and etiquette too. I have a tendency to hunch myh shoulders mostly because I have an artifical shoulder joint in my left shoulder and at times I have pain around the joint. So I seem to favor it and find Iam all scrunched up which is not good posture or good for my general health either. It causes you to sort of squish up your lungs and become short of breath too. I do then straighten up and make myself throw my shoulders back and bring my ribcage up there it belongs.
Slumping when eating is tiring and I think hard on the digestive system also.Sitting here typing I am always leaning forward instead of sitting up straight.I would love to have good posture but am not always practicing it .

Hi Hatley,
When there is pain, it seems that we would do anything to relieve it and I don't blame you for shifting and hunching.
As for leaning forward seated at the computer, I would suggest you get a chair with good back support or at least put a cushion at your lower back to relieve the pressure there.

I tend to fall much together when im sitting in chairs, I should really get better at keeping a good sitting posture, but it seems after a few minutes I get back to the "hanging one"...
It is actually possible to get chairs which for you to have a good seat, maybe I should indeed consider investing in one.

Hi Downwindz,
It would be good to get a chair with a good back support. When I sit, I would try to sit straight but of course not be too tiring, I just try not to slouch. A cushion at the back of the seat may be a good way to support the lower back which is where the pain comes from when we sit too long.

I have a really bad posture.=( I slouch most of the time. My mother and most of my friends are always bugging me about it, they said that I don't give my height justice. I am tall and most often than not, I am the tallest among my set of friends. So I tend to slouch. And, yes, there are times that even when eating, I still carry that posture. I wish I can have a better posture

Hi bokal,
I have noticed that many tall people tend to hunch when they talk to people. I suppose they want to accomodate to those not as tall. It is a bodily advantage to be tall but maybe more care should be given to the posture.
I don't know your age but when we are still young, having a good posture is important if we do not want to suffer later. Having a bad posture might lead to some bone or backache problem in future and you don't want that, do you?
Just a suggestion to you, maybe you want to start taking note?

Oh I am not so particular with table etiquette as long as I can eat what I want and I am at home.. But when I dine out in formal surroundings.., that is the time that I will wonder if I am doing things properly or not..hahaha=)

I suppose all of us are like that, we are more conscious when we are outside as there are people around us. At home we can do just what we like.
However I was talking more about the posture rather than the etiquette. Do you take note of your posture?

Yes, it is true. If sometimes we want badly those things in our life the more it look far from our sight. Most of the times, we are focused on our needs in our daily lives. But we forget sometimes that even before we live these things are already in our existence. Sometimes, the more we want it the more it goes from the distance. But as soon as we will not think of those things, these things will come in a hurry in our doorstep.

Are you talking about our posture or getting our food? There are lots of things in life that we have to work for it and the result is all the more sweeter for the effort we put in. Sometimes things come for free too and we can learn to appreciate that.
