My daughter has just sent me the enclosed photograph of my five year old granddaughter Baecky with their own year old golden labrador, Toby.
I think the affection and faith that Becky has with this dog shines through and is really lovely.
I think for children to grow up with animals is really important, what is your opinion on that?

Hi oldchem1,
I totally agree with you. Growing up it seems to me, everyone had a dog and a cat! At least I know we did. Loving a pet, playing with a dog, feeding an animal and seeing their joy and gratitude is something very special. It's something all children should experience. It's part of humanity. It fills a special part of our very being. Yes, I do think it's important for children to grow up with animals. Thank you for sharing your sweet story.

That is so funny that you should say that! I never realized that but I guess I did notice it on some level. It seems to me that once I know that a person owns a dog or cat or really any kind of animal, I suddenly feel drawn to them. Like I know them. Obviously at that point we have something in common; the love of animals, so yes, I guess, at times people who don't like animals tend to feel strange to me too. That is such a funny observation. :-)

I definitely think children should grow up with animals. It teaches them compassion, not only for people, but for all creatures. I love knowing that a dog or other special pet bonds with a child. My sister just had a baby and her dog LOVES the baby, and lays by her all the time. The only bad thing is that her dog, though he is mostly healthy, is 12 years old so the child will be lose this special friend in the coming years. I'm going to encourage my sister to get another dog when this one passes though, so my niece still has the love of a cuddly friend to share as she grows up.

Hiya chem,
Me too I grew up with Dogs also and it was for a reason. My Mother got cornered by a savage Staffordshire Bull Terrier when she was carrying me inside.
The Dog was a she and she was having Puppies she was going for my MomĀ“s throat. Luckily someone managed to get her away.
So that is why I grew up with Dogs as I used to scream every time I saw one until I had to have one in the House outside and from then on I have never been afraid of Dogs again.
True Story this proves that any Dog can attack but very rare indeed.
I have to be without Dogs now as where we live you are not even allowed to have Budgies either.

I love animals. My kids had animals, cats, dogs, rabbits, a hamster. Now my grandkids have some animals. The ones that don't are still around them especially when here. The animals teach them responsibilitys but also love. This summer I got my granddaughters rabbits and the middle one is the 'rabbit girl' she just adores them. Her two sisters help her but she doesn't care if they do or not, she considers them ALL hers!!!

I agree with you. I grew up my whole life with dogs and I think it is very important.
I remember being a teenager and having crying jags on my dogs and knowing they are there for you without judgment. We have a big golden retriever and my son and her are best of friends. She waits for him to come home from school and plays with him even crying at the door if he is outside playing with his friends.
