A friend asked me about the best way to extend a laptop's or netbook's battery life. I'm not sure what's the answer...
Which is the right way- always plugged it everytime you're using it or use it unplugged, then when the battery's low, it's the time to plug or charge it?
What are the ways to extend it's battery life?
Additional question: When you buy a new laptop, do you have to drain the battery before the initial charging of 8 hours?
Thank you very much! ^.^

There are definitely ways that you can prolong the life of your laptop battery. This is the best approach when using your laptop. When you are at home using your laptop you should remove the battery and just use the powersupply. When you are out and about this is the best time to rely on your laptop battery so make sure that it's fully charged at home before venturing out.
When you first buy a laptop it's best to charge it for the full eight hours regardless of whether the battery still has power. Anyway, definitely consider using your powersupply lead only whilst at home and I'm sure that you will keep your battery in good use. Good luck. Andrew

Thank you for answering, I think I'm doing the wrong thing.. I will follow your advice of removing the battery while I'm connected to a power supply however it might harbor dust, I mean the open slots at the back will be exposed?!...or maybe I should check for some dust protector stuffs out there..^.^!

No, that's fine! This shouldn't be a problem. You can purchase one of those air spray canisters and this gets rid of the dust easily but it's not that serious. The main goal is just to preserve the life of your battery. When you are not using your laptop by all means replace the battery and this will cover the slots up, just remember not to keep the mains plugged in unless you are charging up your battery. Anyway, good luck. Andrew

As the laptop battery is li-ion battery now, we do not worry about battery memory. We had better take it out every 2 weeks, besides, reduce the laptop equipment that need power use.

My laptop is lenovo's thinkpad, you should not always plugged it until the battery's capacity is lower than 95%.

There is a way to make a laptop's battery reach it's maximum lifespan limit, not to extend it because that is impossible since it has limitation on its raw materials. Never charge a battery when your laptop is switched on. Never wait until your laptop is forced to turned off because of low battery power to charge it. It would be better if you had a special mobile charger for your laptop's battery. And when you need to use your laptop for couple hours (more than your battery power can support), plug off the battery and connect your laptop with AC electricity source.

Well, not really, you can actually keep it plugged in, or you can buy a back up battery through the company so that that way you always have a battery on hand.

it is always advised to charge new mobile or labtop to its full capacity and discharge till it drains. That's to be done as soon as we get the good stuff. I think after that also its good to use this way to increase its lifetime.

When you get a new laptop or netbook it is always good to have the batter drained in order for it to utilize all its energy. Always remember not to keep plugged all the time unless it is important it will not die down. But everybody should remember that it is best to have your battery drained. Same as everything else that has a charger like a cellphone is the same, it needs to be drained.

I think the best way is to pull out the battery and use your only your charger for long hours usage.
However, this will risk losing your work if electrical breakdown occurs.
If you won't opt for that, then secondly you can follow your 2nd method, drain your battery before charging each time. This is because when you on the charger, it will try to charge even if your battery is full, this will cause certain amount of damage to your battery.
As for draining battery before charging, i don't think it is necessary as we are going to overcharge it for the first time usage anyway.

as for my experience, even though the battery of laptop is maintenance free, never drain your battery,if your laptop showing already a signal that you have to charge now then do it immediately,if you cant charge at once then stop and shutdown your laptop and dont use until you plug the charger.

I got a laptop, but I didn't drain the battery regularly. Here I have some ways to extend a laptop's battery life. First, if you have electric source to use, as far as possible to reduce the battery of your laptop. Secondly, you should plug it when the battery nearly to drain. Thirdly, you should have a good surrounding around the loptop, the temperature should between 20 to 30.After all, every loptop's battery life is limited, we can extend it but not stop it.

On this, I may say Pink that, I'm using my this laptop for the last 4 and 1/2 years with the same battery, still has a full discharge time on use as 85 minutes, against it was 100 minutes, when it was new! For its stability, what I do is, when I sit for a session of about 3 hours, I don't use power at the starting of laptop. Battery power level notifications are set at 30% and 5% respectively with a beep at 5% level. When this 5% level is reached, I connect the power pin and this makes the discharged batteries to gain charge in about next an hour! By making such full discharging and charging cycle at least twice in a week, battery life and stability is better protected and makes it trouble free also!
It is not necessary to drain out the charges at the purchase, but charge it fully and then run it with battery as per the above cycle of discharge and charge!
Thanks for this nice discussion and have nice battery life in your laptop!!

Hello there,
I am not a computer technician but my friend told me that,it doesn't need to drain your new laptop before charging it for 8 hours.
There is no way of prolonging the laptop battery coz,it only lasts for more than 2 years and after that, the life span becomes shorter and then you need to replace it with new one after 3 years.

The best way is to run the batterty till its flat, and then charge it up again. However, i tend to spend a lot of my time gaming on my laptop, and it wont be able to take more than 2 hours! SO i end up charging and playing, so my battery life now is not very good at all!
