Well i have decided to go in the field of medicine. But then i start to wonder about my life otherwise. You all know it takes a great number of years to be a surgeon, it also have good pay too.
To be a general surgeon will take about 11 years(i will be at the age of 30 by then and i thought i would get married before that)
To be more specific surgeon(like a neurosurgeon - specialize with the brain) will take up to 16 years(i will be 36 by then)
I am thinking that studying for so long will restrict me from getting married early. What do you think?
I also wonder if you can work as a doctor meanwhile training? Because i know i am going to need money to continue my education and i cant depend on my parents for ever.
And lastly i am wondering if that salary will make up for the years of studying. Compare it with your salary and tell me what you think?
general surgeon - US $115,000 - US $350,000 annually
neurosurgeon - US $150,000 - US $550,000 annually
Give me your idea on the whole thing.

Do what you love, and the money will follow. But being a doctor, especially a specialist, does take a tremendous commitment, not just during your education, but after you are actually practicing medicine. The divorce rates for doctors are really high...

Hey, not to say all doctors end up divorced. But doctors work long hours and often get called away for emergencies, and that can put a lot of stress on a marriage.

Sweetie, what difference does it make which one you want to become?
Stop thinking about getting married and do what you think will be best for you.
To compare any salaries won't help now.
By the time you are done with school, it will have changed already.
You can do both studying and working if you keep marrying out of it for a while.

Oh my so I am going to marry when I am a old man. Oh my. But even if the salaries change, i know for sure that my other career choice will not surpass the surgeon. I know that as a fact. plus maybe i can do my other career choice aside while keeping surgeon as my main job.

It takes a great number of years to be a surgeon, yes, but if that is what you truly want, if you want it more than anything in the world, then you better go for it right now. Yes, that means that you may have to put your personal life aside, but again, if you have the grades, the test scores, and the intelligence to be a surgeon, then go for it. Remember though, you are going to have to give up everything to be one.

The future isn't set in stone, but if you really want to be a doctor, then yes, you will have to give up your personal life for a while. That's how it is.
My major is English Literature and Language, and luckily, I don't have to give up my personal life for this major, but I know a lot of people who have had to give up everything for their majors, and that is the price you pay when you go into a demanding major. You have to be ready for that, but if you really truly want it, then your better go for it now.

If this is a serious endeavor, and it sounds like it is, it needs to be a commitment like a marriage and should be entered into with the understanding that you give yourself over to this and not to marriage for many years. You will have to put in a great many hours before you would be given medical creditials and be able to serve as a doctor in any hospital. I would start saving right now, today. I would go with whatever you feel is your calling as far as general or neuro.

Well on a general scale after working many years general surgeon get an average between us$300,000 to $450,000.
And average for neuro surgeon is us $350,000 to $600,000.
Does it make that much of a difference. What do you think, be honest?
I really wanted to get married in my twenties though.

Hi Renhard, my daughter is working her way towards being a doctor. She is in premed now, the mandatory college degree, Biology. But there are other premed courses, too, such as Zoology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Nutrition, Psychology, etcetera. Usually, these courses take a minimum 4 years. Medical school takes another 4 years. All in all, you will study seriously for the next 8 years. If the tuition is a problem, look for scholarships. Renhard, the medical students study medicine so that they could help save lives. I have not heard of anyone talk about the surgeon's salary. Yours is the first, but then you are not in med school yet.

Ok well I am a person who will a job only if it pays well. I aint going to go in a job even if i like doing that specific task if it pays low. I aint growing out of a rich family so i want to enjoy life to the fullest and i want my future kids to get the luxury i never gotten. So my goals right now aint really on going into a career that i like, its basely on going into a career that pays alot. I know alot of people might disagree with me. But i do like medicine its not like i dont like because i do. You know what i wanted from i was small growing up to this age. And i still want it and i will never set my goals off it. Its a lamborghini and it cost about US$250,000. so IF I WANT TO GET TO MY GOAL I REALLY NEED A GOOD PAYING JOB.
What do you think of that?

Mine is not a rich family either but I never dreamt of providing luxury, as in Lamborghini, for my children. Our goals in life differ. Things are just things to me. A simple transport that could get me to my destination is fine. A shirt is a shirt and a bag is a bag. Brands do not mean anything to me.

Well have you ever dreamt to have something in life. Something that is not necessary but still you want to have it? When i first saw a lamborghini was the first i was interested in learning to drive. It made me push my self so far so i can learn to drive as soon as possible. i have learn to drive trucks, cars, tractor and a forktruck and to operate them too, i eve tried a bike. And even though i was scared of the bike i still did. I guess i just want to have all skills necessary to drive that lamborghini.
The thing about it is that when i finally get to buy that lamborghini, I WILL HARDLY DRIVE IT. I just want to have it.
To tell the truth if i have never set that lamborghini to mind, i never thought i would do so well in my school work.

hji renhard you sound very young and the salary is going to your head but you are forgetting one thing a real doctor, a verygood doctor became a doctor not for money but because he or she wants to help heal people and cure diseases. you are putting these figures first and a doctor who does not really want to help others and heal and cure and is only doing this for money will be a lousy doctor. You will be dealing with human life and a mediocre doctor is a real menace to society as they often kill more people than they help. I would think long and hard as to why besides the money do you want to be a doctor. as you did not sound like you were caring one whit about the health of people at all. I have no salary as I am a retiree living on Social security.you scare me as you do not even talk about the work of caring for ill people only the moneyh and the Lamborghini. that's not really very noble. why not electronics wheree you will not be dealing with human lives?

Well i am not like how you describe. I do think about money but i also think about other people lives. But I still consider about the salary because it is still an essential part of life. It would be really stupid to go in a career that pays little wen you know you have the potential to do better. Now that doesnt make any sense. No matter what, in my eyes i have to consider the pay.

You sound very ambitious for one so young. I would pursue the field of medicine if that is where your passion is, money is irrelevant. Some jobs are more than occupations they are a way of life and being a doctor is just that. I don’t believe you can plan life out like that, you get married when the right person enters your life and you are ready to make the commitment and that is something you cannot force to happen. I admire your goals and if medicine is the field for you I would go for it as soon as possible, the earlier you start the earlier you will finish...If you don’t have the passion don’t go there, I hear med school is hard work… All the best with whatever you decide.

First of all I wish you the best of luck with the journey that you are going to be making with your life. I had intended to go to medical school from the time that I was a child and was on that track when I was attaining my undergraduate degree. However, as does tend to happen in our lives, I decided that it was more important for me to be a mother and because of that I decided instead that I wanted to go into the nursing field. Now at this point in my life I am staying at home with my wonderful children.

Wow. You did that. You see that is why i aint going to have a child until i finish medical school. That time will be alrite. I dont want anyone or anything to mess up my education. But tell the truth if you had still went to medical school, do you think you would be able to provide for them more?

Renhard kiddo, you want to do it? Just do it! Other things will fall in place in due course. I am sure you can marry before 30, and the girl can fend for herself - may be even help you complete your education. :) It is what you like rather than compromise. You compromise and get into another field, it is unlikely that you will shine brilliantly there because you would be constantly aware of what you wanted to do in the first place, and why you couldnt. There are scholarships, grants, and other types of finances. Work hard to get them, instead of feeling sorry for your parents. Even if you cant get those, dont be disheartened, the returns compensate. Student loans are there for financing part of your education. If you need financial advise, take help of a professional - that way you wouldnt go wrong. Dont focus on present salaries. They will increase to accommodate inflation factor. Based on your input it is difficult to define how much you need to complete your education and when you will break even. I need to know how much will be your fees for each of those years, rate of inflation in your states, tax rates applicable to any earnings, how much you could earn without disturbing your education, any books and stuff you need to buy for your education, interest charged by banks on any student loan, how much of student loan you would be eligible for, and from when would you be expected to repay, any grants, education loan from government, etc., that you would be eligible for and when will they be disbursed. I presume the salary you mentioned relates to present day income of these surgeons. If you can provide rest of the data, I think I can project how long it would take you to recover all your expenses, and how much you could save at retirement by following this profession. You could also give me information about another profession you have in mind - how much is present day salary and how much of such expenses would be incurred by you. That way, we could compare and decide which profession is better for you. :)

Thanks aunt for the advice. So far i dont know the school fees as yet. only two jobs i had in mind though.
1)Computer engineer - The least you get payed is about us $45,000 and the highest you get payed working normally is us $90,000. All this is annually. To get over that you would have to create something or invent something if you get what i am saying. If you are not that lucky then you wont get that much.
2) Surgeon - The least for surgeon is about $115,000 and this is working normally.
So that alone show you I am better off in the field of medicine than computers. I love both. And i feel i could still do the computers aside in the future if i want and still keep the surgeon as my main job. What do you think?

Here is how I see it; the years are going to go by whether you want them to or not, so whether you opt that route better to be the doctor than have not have done nothing at all.
As for whether or not you would marry, before, during or after. Perhaps you find someone with the same mind frame and while being married you both can relate the hard work and persistence it takes.
Good luck, and I say go for it. As for how much it cost, once you are done you will make twice over as being in the field I know now a neurosurgery cost begins at minimum 30 grad just for a single procedure.

Hello,
I understand what you're going through since I've also thought about proceeding with Medicine. But unlike you, I haven't actually thought of a specific field to specialize in. True Medicine takes a lot of time, effort and money but what matters is your dedication to take up the field and your reasons. If it is only for the money then it would be really hard but if it is your passion, sacrifices will bear fruit.
You can actually still get married while training to be a doctor, my aunt did that. I'm not sure when (after she graduates or when she had her license or somewhere in between) There are already some medical students who are married.
It is also true that being a surgeon, whatever the sub-specialty is, will pay nicely. But no one would get a good pay that fast, but it will be enough more or less to take back the money used for the education. I also think it depends on your skill as a surgeon to make it a success in this career.
well, whatever you decide I hope it will be something that will satisfy you and make you happy. Good luck and have a nice day! :)

You see i only had two jobs in mind. and i notice the most money i can make off the first job no matter how much years I a in there for is under the pay i will get for the first year as working as a surgeon, i found that through research. So i know the pay is satisfactory when i just start working. I wanted to be a doctor all my life and i wasnt thinking about the money then, its since recently when i start to look on the price of living, the money i want to pay back my parents, the money to live very comfortable and the money to buy that lamborghini(i wont come off that lamborghini, its my goal so try not to be annoyed when you hear me talk about it so much). You see i can expect to get all those things without having a good paying job, and to me it is quite idiotic to get in a job without at first looking at the salary.
