The story of Oliver Twist

My mother tongue isn't English so I never had the urge to read Oliver Twist in English. But now I stumbled over this book and read it. I really like the story and I was curious what other people here write and think about the story. Surprisingly I didn't find one discussion about Oliver Twist. I just searched for "Oliver Twist" I don't know if I miss something. Well, if someone has already started a discussion about this book please help me and otherwise I would like to talk (or write) about the book here.

I haven't READ the book, but I've seen the movies - both the old version and the musical version - Oliver! I have actually seen the play about 3 times live and the movie. I named the black and white kitten in my avatar Oliver for Oliver Twist because he was abandoned at a week old - he'll be 5 on the first of October. He looks quite the part of a "gent" now with his shiny black coat and white "shirt" and "spats"

hehe, so you aren't a reader? or you just never read the book because you have others in your to-read-list. Honestly, I never watched the movie or musical. Thank you for giving me a hint to watch them. Oliver is a nice name for the cat, especially with this background.

Hey lucas5, I'm surprised you learnt a lot while reading this book. Well, at least you have some old English words in your repetoire now :-)

I read it because they say it's a great book, but I didn't like it that much. Maybe because the English in it is "too old", and that's hard on me because English is my 2nd language. (it's also why I can't appreciate Shakespeare's poems, because of the "too old" English it uses)

It's my second language too and I didn't understand some of the old words. But I think it isn't that bad like Shakespeare. To be honest I can't read Shakespeare, not even in my mother tongue.

I haven't read Oliver Twist neither in my native language nor in English. I have the book at home in English. Once I tried to read the book I was interested in for some reason but after two or three pages I couldnt go on reading. Maybe that s because the book pages quality was low and font size of the book very small.

I would say a lot of different publisher have Oliver Twist so you can find a book where the font size is bigger than normal. I know what you mean, sometimes the font size is really too small and it's difficult to switch to the next line. I never thought to read the book in an other language than English. Originals are always better.
