Were You Born In The Same Town/City As You Are In Now?

I was born in a place called Ashton-Under-Lyne, Tameside, Greater Manchester. Due to my Grandad (on my Dad's side) committing suicide in the house we stayed in, we all got turfed out by Dad's sisters, one of whom dominates the other in these situations..in other words, she's a COW.
Mum was pregnant with my brother at the time so we all moved to Glossop where he was subsequently born. As far as I know, we were with my Mum''s parents then and work brought us all back to Blackpool, where Mum had initially grown up. Whilst staying there my Dad saved all the money he could for a deposit on the house the pair of them still live in now. That was way back in 1969, after the birth of myself in 1966 and brother Danny in 1967. He told a white lie about his earnings as he was desperate to get his hands on this particular house and worked harder than maybe he should've done over the years to pay for it. In 1990 he received a pay-out from the Council where he'd worked for 25 years or so which allowed him to pay off the mortgage, something he had struggled with since they moved in.
However, having said all that, neither parent has ever had a credit card. Dad is more frugal with his money and Mum saves up for things. They have been married since 1965 and, despite their arguments I am really lucky to have them, even now. I live 100 miles away in Carlisle but think about them every day and speak to Mum 3 times a week. I visit their house whenever I can and marvel at the thought that they've lived there since 1969. Mum has the "modern" head on which stems from her love of interior design and colour. I'm quite sure that if she was about 17 now she'd pursue this love and make a career out of it but what she does to compensate is to keep the house looking as good as finances will allow. She worries that once she finishes work (undecided when that will be) she won't be able to afford to do things so she's getting it all out of the way now.
She even got excited about a new toilet seat she bought recently, made by an American company don't you know.
So, do you live in the same place you were born in? If not, do you miss it?

To mis-quote Bruce Springsteen:
Born in West LA, man, I was born in West LA.
I live in the Sacramento area now, and yeah there are things I miss about LA, also things I don't miss, like the high prices, crowding, crime, smog, etc.

no, I was born in New Jersey and my parents brought me to Texas before I was 2.
I have lived in Austin (except to go to college) ever since.
Not in the same house, but I can point out all the places we have lived in Austin, tho they tore down the house my folks rented when we first came to town.

At last ElicBxn, someone who is telling me WHERE they were born and WHERE they are living now. When someone mentions "a Town" it could be anywhere in the world. I can now picture where you're at and thanks for telling me.
As for you ZeXyRech, I am sure the Philippines has its good points, everywhere does you know? Welcome to MyLot!

How I wish I could have lived in other cities too. I have lived all my life in our old town somewhere in a province in the Philippines. I wonder how it would be nice to live in the United States. I dreamed of having someone to take me there however, I think my dream will just stay as a dream.

No, I live in a different city now. I was born and raised in the Bay Area (near San Francisco). Now I live in the Sacramento area, just like Dawn, only different as she's on higher ground away from all the smog! LOL
Sure, there are things that I miss, like the beach (it was only a 5 min drive away). But it's been so long since I've lived in the Bay Area, I hardly miss it anymore.
Happy mylotting!

Do you ever seen Dawn in the "real world" so to speak? There's loads of people on this site I'd love to live near..stop me from getting lonely anyway.

I moved out of the town that I was born in when I was one year old, but we only moved 15 minutes away so I was regularly in the town that I was born in and went to High School there. I left the town that I grew up in in 1994. Some of my friends that I grew up with have stayed there and bought homes to raise their kids there as well, but there was no way that I was going to do that!
My parents still live in that town, in the same house that I grew up in. They have been there since 1974. It is only a small town, population 2000 when I was there, must be more now though as it has expanded. They have traffic lights there now too!
I now live nearly 2000 kilometres away from there, not sure what that is in Miles, but it is two 10 hour days driving to get there. I do not miss it at all.

I know, I have driven much of Britain and most of it in a day. Some people in London thought we were mad for attempting to drive so far as most of them did not own cars and had never left London!
I drove from London to Hexham near Hadrain's Wall one day and then a few days later drove from Inverness in Scotland to Wales in one day with a decent stopover in Liverpool to do a Beatles tour on the way! That was three countries in one day. I can drive the same distance here or more and still be in the same state!

It never fails to amaze me how massive your country is! We could drive from one end of Britain to the other in a day, quite easily.
It's good that you've not regretted moving away. I haven't really; it's just that I keep comparing Carlisle with Blackpool and I shouldn't because each has its good and bad points so they cancel each other out, if that makes sense.
Still annoys me that Carlisle's houses are so dear but that's another story!

No. In fact, my father sold the house his father left him! And subsequently, I bought a house for him, and again he sold it! :( He simply wouldnt listen to me in those days. :( Now, he realizes how others manipulated him for their personal gains, and how foolish he'd been all the while. Luckily, I succeeded in buying a couple of houses. We are living in one and living off the rent from the others. Apart from this my present earnings cover my retirement policy, taxes, and medical insurances. Retirement policy is, I think, necessary to accommodate any inflationary effect, and some periods, when the house will be vacant. We do not have social security out here, nor do we have medicaid, so we need to plan for them as well. But I guess, god will help. :)

Janey sweetie - the trick is to plan piecemeal and not everything at once. Many people think they will do everything at one go, that does not happen. When you have spare monies, you do need to set at least 75 percent of it aside. :( I am not the best planner. :(

i was born in Lapu-Lapu City Philippines and i just recently moved to London.
i am actually in the stage of having homesickness. people around me keep on entertaining me these days, but for some reasons it is just so difficult not to miss everything back in my hometown.

I admire people like yourself that have to find work in other countries, never mind a couple of hundred miles away from home.
I don't live anywhere near London but we have visited a few times. Busy isn't it? Takes some getting used to, all the noise. I love public transport in London and I find it amazing that the locals moan about it. If we had transport like that around here, well, it would be praised to the hilt!
I think it's sweet that people are trying to entertain you. Is that English people or people from your own country? London is so cosmopolitan, it's what makes the place so alive. Next time you feel homesick think of the money you are earning. Should make you feel better.

I was born in a supermarket…… actually I was born in a maternity hospital which 25 years ago ended up being demolished and now sits a supermarket.
Anyway, yep I still live in the same town where I was born and although I often complain about the town and the way the local imbeciles ….. I mean council ….. run it I wouldn’t move, well maybe to somewhere where political imbeciles didn’t ruin lives. I did at one point move up to Sheffield, living a 10 minute walk from the city centre and although I sort of miss the variety of shops I certainly don’t miss the city way of life.

I'm taking a guess you are on about Meadowhall, where I worked at the Savacentre. It was quite nice for me because I was up there over the Christmas period and so the shopping center looked really special. I never did get to the Arena whilst I was up there, to busy trying to pay rent at the time, lol.
As for where I live now, I live in a market town in Hertforshire, about a 45 minute drive from London.

I've been to Sheffield twice. Once to visit that huge indoor shopping centre where all I bought was a football for my nephew (found the place stifling to be honest) and the second time I went to Sheffield Arena to watch Tina Turner. She was awesome, I enjoyed that visit more.
So, do you still live in the Yorkshire county? A friend of mine moved jobs within the civil service to Leeds from Blackpool (with her family) and loves it. New house too. Bet she's up to her eyes in debt though lol.

I don't live in the same city that I was born in but I am close. I lived in Alabama for a while and just traveled around trying to find my place in the world but all the time it seemed I just wanted to be in my home state. I moved to an area west of my city where I lived for a while and then now I have been east of my city for about 13 years now. Longest I have ever stayed anywhere so I guess that this is where I will stay.

This country isn't the biggest but it's still extremely diverse. Tends to be more crowded I would say down south..and if I moved again it would be somewhere north, therefore not far away from where I am now. So I guess we're alike in that respect!

Nah, I surely don't live where I was born. I grew up in a small town, Midwest Missouri, USA, and even where I grew up, I wasn't born in that city/town. The closest hosptial was 45 miles away. I now live Southeast, South Carolina, USA, which is 1300 miles from where I grew up. I do miss my home town, though it's not the place, it's the family and friends. The memory of how life was, and how dull it could be at times. I travel back, at least once a year to visit, and it's nice to go back to the country life of life and get out of the city for a while. It's also nice to see how things have changed.

Thanks for that informative response, it's much appreciated.
I know what you mean about places you once lived in changing..I only live 100 miles away from where I grew up and get back there about 4-5 times a year..and everything has changed! Loads of development going on at the seafront and the Town Centre got "done up" after I left. I wonder why none of this happened when I was there?!

Hiya Janey,
I was born in Wolverhampton Staffs. England and I lived there till I was 21 years old.
Then I came here to Pamplona Navarra Spain to live.
I have been back to England but not very many times due to lack of money mainly and time also.
Do I miss Wolverhampton? Yes terribly sometimes but you learn to get around it and make those "bad days" into the best you can.
I don´t know if I could go back to live there after all that has happened to me there it would be something to think about deeply and mull over it for a long time.
At the moment I am here and that´s it.
Nothing really exciting and nothing that boring either.

Hiya Janey,
Wolverhampton yes that´s the one that is in the West Midlands but in Staffordshire which is in the West Midlands.
Wolverhampton Wanderers is it´s Football Team as well or Wolves if you like.
I would like to move away too sometimes but beggars can´t be choosers at the moment.
Never mind things will turn out right. Besides with a Mom like yours I would never feel sad I don´t think anyway.

Is that the same Wolverhampton that calls its football team "Wolves?" I got a bit confused when you said "Staffs" cos I thought Wolverhampton was in the West Midlands. I'm really confusing myself now!
I often think what I'd feel like if I emigrated to another country. Sometimes I just want to get away from here and other times I feel that I would dearly miss the people. Yes, there are horrible people here but the good ones definitely outweigh the bad..so I suppose it would be the people I'd miss more than anything else..oh and the green grass, I'd definitely miss that!

Born and raised in the same city that I live in now, most of my mother's side of our family lives here. I think if I were single, or it were just my husband and I, we would move somewhere else. But I can't imagine raising my children without our parents close by, since they have such a great relationship with all of their grandparents.

Love the avatar, it's gorgeous! Yes, it makes sense to stay where you are for the children and their grandparents. My nephew lives with his parents around the corner from his Nan and Grandad (my parents) and he still goes round for his Sunday Dinner, along with his Dad..he's now 20.

I don't live in the same place I was born in. I was born in an another country. That's the characteristic of my family members. My grandfather's father didn't live in the same place he was born in and my father didn't live as well. We always move to another place we see better, usually that's towards west. I think my children will carry on this habit and maybe in the future we will be back at the starting point of our journey.

No, I don't currently live in the same city as the one that I was born in. I was born in Montreal, in Canada. And I currently live two hours away, as it's where I'm currently go to university. Thanks for sharing that with us, it makes sense to actually live in the place you are studying in. That happens a lot in this country too. Students come and go in a house over the road as they rent it out whilst studying at the nearby Uni..but I guess you want to stay permanently where you are or will you go back to Montreal at some point?
