I've just watched the movie for the 4th times and I realy really like it, I mean it's a great story and I always shed tears mainly due to the flawless direction of Robert Zemeckis. However, every time I watch it I just can't connect with Tom Cruise's character. Whenever I watch the film I always see Tom Cruise as a mainstream actor overacting. Honestly, I could act like that if I wanted. Just because he acts mentally disabled doesn't mean he deserves an Oscar. In fairness he does play his role low-key.. he doesn't exaggerate too much and that is always a plus. But I honestly believe that there are a thousand actors out there that could have done the same job, if not better. I just don't believe he has made any significant achievement with acting in this film. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Tom as an actor, I think Risky Business and Castaway are his 2 greatest roles, he was brilliant in both of those. I definitely respect him as an actor, but to win an Oscar for portraying a disabled man which I believe anyone could have done?

Yes, I agree. I have never been a fan of his, and he seems kind of weird in real life too. He was great as the fat guy in Tropic Thunder though, very funny!

are you talking about Thomas Hanks ?I can't agree with you .the reason for Thomas Hanks can't be as simple as you said .according to your logic ,the hero of "rainman" is not qualified to gain his Oscar either.Hanks did play well in the movie .His play is pretty carefull and serious .you had better watch his play one more time .

Disagree completely!
I am far away from cinematography so I ma not bias in that sense.
It might very easy to place a drunk man or a disabled person. Anyone could do that you say.
But the trick here is to play the role so that people watching the movie have no doubt whether it was for real.
I think Tom did that brilliantly.

I'm not sure if you meant Thom Hanks instead but I remember this movie when I was still young and my heart always applaud for Thom. How he acted was somewhat the reality of how people with such disability would naturally act. So I don't think that he wasn't good for the Oscar...He deserves it as the rest of the disabled person in the world.
