How does the amazone affilate work?

I was just wondering how does the amazone affilate work.. some people were telling me that you can make good money, through that but you have to work your butts of... but in the end it will pay.. so im thonking why not... its better than doing nothing and wasting time....
so please if anyone could assit me in this

you sign up for Amazon.com affiliate and you use their program to post links of where to buy items from their website on your website or blog and you get 4% commission. It goes up if you sell a lot.
