We thought the equipment back to its rightful owners

After my husband passed, we called the homecare who called the company whom we had gotten the hospital bed from plus the mattress to pick them up. We then notified the company who loaned us the wheelchair to pick it up and that was done so. Our van was in the shop getting ready to be sold since I do not drive and it was a handicapped van and some handicapped person could use it. So they came over and picked it up.
We still had the bed pads, etc. and medicines and we did return the medicines but the pallatative nurse who would have come for the bed pads was on holidays and so he would pick them up when he returned.
Now in the two above cases, we did get a form that I had to sign plus a copy for my records.
A few days later after this, after we told the Als society and Deerlodge of my husband's death and I am sure that the funeral director sent them the death certificate, a couple of men with a claiming to be from Als or Deerlodge, said they were there to pick up some equipment. We said (my nurse friend and I) that there was the communication device and they could take along the commode chair since it came from the same place and assumed they would give it to the Als Society or Deerlodge would since they were in the same building.
But I got a phone call a couple of days ago that they did not receive any of the items.
My friends say that I would not have to pay but one of the Als people figured that I should have been more observant, take the licenses, etc. got ids, etc. but when your husband dies, you do not think of those things.
Anyway I have not been getting that much sleep for worrying, and thinking that maybe someone heard me talking and since my friend sort of interrupts before the conversation is over, got the idea that those items were to be donated.
I never gave anyone that idea and we did have the funeral notice in the paper and my husband was well known.
So if someone felt I was donating the stuff when I was not or someone pretended to be from Deerlodge or the Als society, would I be obligated to pay for the items?

Hopefully, it was a big mistake. Otherwise, I would call the police, report what happened, so it can be considered stolen. How would anyone know that the society even helped you? It does not make much sense. Did they give you at least a first name? This is something you really should not have to be worrying about. If they do try to make you pay for it, maybe your insurance will kick in.

I think that could be it. They probably were resentful at the help my husband got while he was alive and since if they had taken it then, the neighbors would have been angry, so now they took advantage of the widow.
I do hope it was a mix up on the Als and Deerlodge's end, and they would find that it was in another department by mistake, but if it was criminal, that they would find out who was pretending to be them, recover the equipment, and get them arrested. So far, the Deerlodge lady has not get back to me, so it could be that they have already told the police what happened and I am sure this has happened before.

It sounds like a mistake made by someone else,I would not think you should have to pay for anything as it all sounds like a big mix up.I hope that they get it figured out soon for you.I hope that you are doing well my friend.Have a wonderful day.

They said that they got a call to pick up some equipment and the only equipment to pick up was the commode chair and the communication device. I told them about the pads and they said no it was someone else's. The lady at DeerLodge said it was in limbo and I might not have to pay for it now. But I do not want to pay for it at all, since it was not my fault and I gave them as much information as I could.
But it makes me hard to get things that I need, because there is a man on our street who is also an invalid and if the nurse or the case worker sees the Sears truck pull up with the fridge at my door later on this month or even the next month, they will assume that I sold the equipment illegally and am pocketing the money.
So I am in a tight situation since my fridge is going and freezing up every week now instead of every two weeks.
