I was sitting outside this morning thinking about the grandkids going back to school. and i remembered something funny my grandson said a few years ago, about not being able to wear "wife beaters" to school. But he said he wanted some. he was about 16 yrs then. well, since ive been away from my teen grandkids, ive gotten out of the loop as some new things they say and are calling things. Do you know any new, funny things they are calling stuff these days? btw, "wife beaters" are shirts like tank tops, but the old fashioned armless T- shirts like they wore way back when. obviously some teenager must have watched "streetcar named desire" or something where Marlon Brando was wearing this?

hi bunnybon7 I have heard that term a lot from teeen boys and it
always makes me shudder. I dread that term as I think it became
used for red neck men with those old armless T-shirts they
wore back when nobody ever interfered with a man beating up
his wife, they seemed to think that was just the thing to do
to keep women down and hurt so to me its an ugly term denoting a time when wife beating did not bother the police or anyone else.

Oh, how funny! I haven't heard that one! Yes, amazing. I have a son who just started high school this year, and I have to get back into the teen talk again myself! A totally different world, that brings home just how long ago our own teen years were, huh?!?? Yikes!

Oh...lol..is that what they call them?? I didn't know that!!
When I started reading the post, I thought he probably meant 'wind cheaters'!
My older son is a tween....and I havent' hearing many new words lately. It could also be because he is homeschooled and he only gets to spend an hour or two with his friends everyday.

I had not heard this term until I was married the second time. Shows how sheltered I was, even in public school. I just did not hang around that much with people who used slang. We were kind of cliquish, jocks, freaks and greasers. I never fit anywhere exactly. The term "nerd" had not been invented yet, or I would have had a label.

its fairly recent term gerty...last 5 yrs or so i think. wouldnt been in my time either. they were just t-shirts, like my dad wore in the 50s and 60s

I'm quite familiar with wife beaters and I remember that there were a lot of people that wore them outside of school when I was a student. That said, I really can't think of anything funny that my children have children have called something recently. I do remember, however, when my son was little he always thought that a drink was a "gunga," I have no idea what the origin of this one was, but it was something that I always got a kick out of when he was smaller.

My brother had wife beaters, and so did a lot of my friends, that what guys wear. It's not a bad thing, but I could never understand why they were called "wife beaters".

yep. i wonder also. but i guess it wouldnt make much sense to call a girls shirt that. maybe we should call the girls shirts "husband beaters?"

I have a teen daughter and I have never heard her talk about these. She probably knows that if she told me what they were called I would say that she would never hang out with anyone who wore them anyway. That is a tacky nickname for a shirt. I am thankful that she is homeschooled and doesn't bring home a lot of that slang that they learn in school. She has plenty of friends but most of them know my rules about things and how I like for things to be.

it sure isnt a nice name. its funny in a way, but having been abused myself years ago i understand why it would be unacceptable. home school is the very best thing these days. so much safer.

I'm familiar with the term "wifebeaters" but I don't know it's origin.. it's just one of those words that's passed around so many times it's common knowledge but where it came from is not. I had an ex who would use that term frequently for any tank top shirt.
I can't recall anything funny my kids have said lately... although some of my younger ones have been in a swearing phase lately, and a few days ago my 2 year old called me a "Crazy Fu**". You almost can't help but laugh when a word like that comes out of a 2 year old's mouth. I haven't found the source of these words yet though, but I believe my 7 year old is teaching them to the little ones.. I just can't figure out where he's hearing them from.

James Dean wore these too, didn't he? The new japanese art my granddaughter used to do and I can't remember the name of it. The gothic clothing and make-up she used to wear. She was very artsy fartsy. I wish she was here right now. She could come up with a lot of phrases and such that they use now days. I am definitely out of the loop.
