Why do Single Dads go unrecognized ?

I am a single Dad and caring for my daughter full time. Again and again I get asked strange questions or even get questioned when on the phone to a professional when I say I am a full time dad. I know there are many single parents like me and most of which are female carers, but why is it still that single mums is the term most commonly used? what is your opinion?
