Two weeks ago I had to send my laptop to a local company to replace the keyboard that got water damaged while on a recent boat trip. When it came back fixed, my administrator password is no longer recognized. It's not expired, Windows just dosen't recognize it. I really don't know how to fix it or get it back short of buying recovery software from someone like Stella Phoenix's Password Recovery. I really don't need to spend another 49 bucks after just putting out 160. to fix keyboard issue. Does anyone out there know how to recover an administrator password in laymens terms that I might understand? Can anyone suggest a free alternative to purchasing software? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

This program that RamRes suggest I have heard of it before and understand it works well. As for the technician intentionally changing it perhaps not.
Did you give the technician the password so he could work on your computer, if not then he might have changed it to a default one. Have you called him to find out if this is so. Maybe try using like 1234 or something but I would try and call.
If you have already called and there is no other alternative, then go to downloads dot com where you can get free downloads. You can even check cnet dot com and also perhaps get free and if not at least get reviews on any you find free and interesting from downloads site.
Good luck, I can imagine how frustrating this must be. Good luck to you!

Hi HWG..Good point. I never thought that he might have changed it. Don't know why he would need an administrator password to replace keyboard, but then what do I know? I will call him in the am. Thanks much J

Every PC and laptop has a small battery inside that runs the time clock. If you are able to open the back cover of the laptop and remove and re fix the battery you will be able to reset the password. I don't think there is another way of doing it. If you cannot do it yourself then you will have to take to a qualified person or a friend who will be able to do it.

Yes, sulsisels, I did that so often to recover my own password and to recover password on my friend's PCs. It always worked and I see why it should not work with your laptop. You have to remove the small round button like battery, which powers the computer clock. After removing it restart it once and then fix it back.

Hi Gabs Believe it or not, I do not have this sorted out yet. While I got a lot of good responses on how to go about it, I really don't know what I'm doing so I have asked a friend of mine who is completly computer savy to come fix it for me. I hope to see him the first of the coming week. I can't for the life of me figure out how my password got changed. The tech that installed my new keyboard a couple of weeks ago said he did not do anything with it as he would have no reason to. I had thought that maybe he changed it to a default for some reason but he says definitely not. So..Thank God for smart friends who understand all the things that I don't and believe me, there are a lot of things I dont understand! I basically know how to operate the thing and have taught myself to do some things technically, but not much.
Hows my Gissi? Give him a big kiss for me! Talk to you soon..J

Just download the Hirens Boot CD. It's a bootable CD with a lot of recovery, management tools, one of them is able to delete passwords of Windows. Just download it on another computer, burn a disk with it, boot from it and blow up your password.
I'm thinking, is it possible that the tech has done something to the computer? While it's possible for you to forget the password, what is they changed it on purpose?

You can try using Offline NT Password and Registry Editor. It's an open source program that is only 3MB size. It's capable of resetting your Windows password in just a few minutes. I have tried and tested the software myself and it worked! Just Search the Web and you can find lots of information about it.
