What do you do with emails informing you that you have won a fortune???

Everyday I receive many spam emails informing me that I have won a lottery. I just deleted these emails without even reading them. I still remember the first time I had received this type of an email. I received this email informing me that I had won millions of GBP and I was very happy. I asked for proof and I received all sorts of scanned images on letter heads etc. proving that they were genuine. I just had to pay a small amount to get the amount I had won. For days I dreamed about how I would spend the money. I tried to take a loan so that I could get the amount. That time I was working for a banks back office and received an office update giving information about these sort of spam emails. You can imagine my disappointment. I was very sad but a part of me was happy that I had not lost any money from my pocket. Has anything like this ever happened to you ?

ya...i too get loads of emails like this...i dint fall for this trap ...however one my friends lost some 45000INR.... after he received the mail,he contacted the person with the phone number given in the mail....that guy spoke so convincingly and asked a deposit of 45000rs for transaction an tax charges as the funds were from abroad(original prize was 10 lakhs INR)....he gave all the bank details for transfer of money too....his response was very very quick...my friend too transfered his money and then contacted the same person...but now the phone was always switched off and never heard from him...all that was lost was his money and time..we contacted the police, they filled our compliant, but dint report us till now.....pity that government turns a deaf ear to all these issues....dont get fooled by any other scam like this..nowadays these kind of scams come in cell phone msgs too...

Providing the spam filter does not catch them, I just hit the delete button. The fact remains, if I did win a fortune from someone, the fact is that I strongly believe that I would not receive it my e-mail. It is just purely rubbish, true and true, and I just bin it like I would any other rubbish in this world. Some people put a lot of time and effort to make it look legit and I wonder who could have so much time on their hands. The problem is that people have to be falling for these things. Otherwise, people would not send it out. Some of them are malicious, but others are just most likely having a laugh and have no harm intended. It is a wild goose chase. Then there are those who try to get your personal information, with an attempt to wipe you out. Those scams that should be banned but the fact is, they will be around as long as there is just one person who could be fooled.

I've set keywords within my E-Mail account to automatically place them into my spam box, I don't read them as I never enter anything and I don't plan on being drawn into a scam or receive a virus. My spam box is generally full of them, all sounding pretty much the same and I really dislike getting them.

When I first started looking for ways to earn money online, because of health issues I couldn't work for 18 months, I started getting all those scam letters too. But I was niave and one that I got said I won a BMW car and I fell for it. I contacted them and they sent me all kinds of proof of who they were and sent me letterhead stuff with pictures of the president of BMW and so on. I went as far as phoned the BMW dealership where I lived and took the emails with me, I printed them out, and they were amazed. The pictures were correct pictures and the letterhead was from them and so on. They kept the letters and they called their headquarter office and sent them off to them. They said they were going to follow this up with their lawyers and so on. So I learned that these scams happened all the time and now when I get an email saying I won something I just send it to my scam box and that way the next time that someone from that email address sends me another one it will automatically go to my scam box instead of my inbox. That is how I weed them out of my inbox and I rarely get any there anymore, just lots in my scam box. Cheers and have a good day my friend, Chris

All those type of letters are scams. When i first became involved wih the internet i recieved a letter like that and coencidently the name and place where the letter was from was of a person i was familiar with. I thought it was a relative of my friend at first. Till i replied and recieved an answer. Then i realized it was a scam. Whenever i recieve these i just deleate it without even opening them. You can usually tell from the subject heading.

Emails like these are considered to be Nigerian scams. They are not true emails because any person who received these emails about you had won a lottery without knowing is not good to apply. These lottery email scams sound too good to be true. I had so many myself that I just spam and delete them.

I know some scams are very sophisticated but how can you win a lottery that you have never gone in for?

I put them in my AOL spam folder. In the 1990's I played Free Lotto and never won anything. That's why I never was taken by these scam emails, because I didn't think I would ever win. Sometimes I open the scam emails to see what they say.

I also receive emails like yours and I know from the start that they are scams. I always deleted them; I don't open the mails. Imagine winning a lottery worth thousands without you investing on something; a big hoax.

Any email that says that you won millions of dollars and ask you to pay means that they are a scam.

Well, fortunately I still haven't been deceived by one of those e-mails. When I receive one of the kind, I just delete it without even bothering on opening it or reading it either. Many of them can contain virus too, so it's better to get rid of them

Anytime I open my email and see the subject line about me winning and or getting anything my friend, I simply delete and do not even open it. With a world of full of so many scams I do not even dare read it's content as many can come with virus. See the way I see it if I win anything bring it to me. Do not call me, email, text me or send me a message. If you truly feel I won something it should not come with hidden agendas. Glad you did not lose anything with this, we must continue to educate people of the possible scams out today.

Yes this happened to me all the time. I just ignore these kinds of messages from my email and even my mobile phone. Since I didn't signed up for something, there is no way that I will win anything. I delete those messages right away. It is good that you didn't fell for that either. But there are still people who fell for their schemes. People who just newly used the internet and just learned how to use it. They are still not aware that this is happening. It is good that there would be someone who will tell them that it is just a scam and they will only take money from them and after that they will just be at a loss. There should be an awareness to everyone when they sign up to have an email address which is the first step in learning something on the internet that they should be careful not to give in to these kinds of schemes. Thank you for this nice topic and I am an avid supporter for the awareness of everybody regarding these schemes.

I had many emails similar to that, it almost got me the first time I received it but I'm just thankful that I had done research before dealing with them. I was finding for their office address on the web but it turned out to be wrong address so I concluded it was not true at all. A spam! This bunch of junk emails will clog your email system so better trash it right away. Spamguard filter also will be useful for this, it will automatically delete those emails with the addresses that you listed on your blacklist..by the way, this is for yahoo users.
