my family has back ground on diabetes, both my mother and my fathers side. my mom doesnt want to admit that she may have diabetes and she doesnt want to consult any doctor or to have her tested since she is afraid of finding out that she does have diabetes. my grandmother and 2 uncles died because of diabetes and another aunt of mine is taking insulin shots every day. is there any other cure for diabetes out there aside from insulin?

I currently work on a diabetic hospital ward and have seen what the disease can do when it is not properly controlled. I also have colleagues who have diabetes themselves (both type 1 & type 2) and they lead perfectly normal lives with the aid of regular control.
Most doctors will recommend treatment by diet & exercise in the first instance & this can be sufficient to control diabetes in its earlier stages. There are then oral medications in various dosages.
Your mother has far more to fear from undiagnosed/untreated diabetes than she does from finding out.

Diabetes is classified in two types.
Type 1, in which the pancreas produce a little or no insulin at all. This is the type where the patient has ti take insulin injections to manage high glucose level in the body. Exercise and diet also have to be regulated.
Type 2, in which the pancreas of the patient produce insulin, but not in sufficient quantities. This is generally managed by oral medication. Exercise and diet also have to be regulated.
There are specific tests to determine dosage, diet and exercise needed to prescribe medication.
Now as for your mother's fear in getting a diagnosis, it for you and your family to convince her it is absolutely essential. It is counter productive not to have a simple test. Undiagnosed Diabetes can lead to severe complications which will lead to misery later.
I have been type 1 Diabetic for about 23 years and have been regular with medication, diet and exercise. I have no major complications and am leading a life as normal as any other non diabetic person.

wow...good for you.. congratulations and good luck...i will pray that God will continue to give you strength to live.. make your weakness your strength...^_^
convincing my mom is the greatest challenge i we would need to get past since she would rather take in any other pain reliever or ignore the symptoms of diabetes that she sees in her body than to have a check up. i am still finding a way to be able to convince her...

ur worry is quite normal.i presume ur mother is scared not of diabetes but of tne insulin injection. it would be better not to insist her on going for the tests. if u really have not observed presence of diabetes symptoms in her, why should u insist her on going for the tests ? well, as precautionary measures u consult good doctors and go in for all in the family including ur mother for such diet that control diabetes. besides, according to age u all should do some sort of physical exercises(activities).for, it is proven that only taking insulin or medicines diabares can not be kept under control without intake of proper foods and physical exercises.

hj slip;z no there is no cure for diabetes not even insulin will cure it but when we get good control of our blood sugar,we can live long and happy lives with all the new and latest things we have all learned. tell your mom that diabetes can be wonderfully handled and she can live a happy life and be like everyone else if she just learns to control her blood sugar. By refusing to see a doctor she is condemning herself to bad side effects. its only uncontrolled diabetes that causes all the problems that uneducated people think is what diabetes is all about. those of us who take good c are of ourselves have no side effects and can live long and productive lives now days. but first she has to see her doctor and get started treating her diabetes now. Tell her Mrs. Hatley m, thats me, is now 84 and has had diabetes for thirty five years with no side effects and am doing something right. You do not now have to die of diabetes unless you just refuse to take care of yourself and control your blood sugar. there are many of us who live very happy and productive lives and have diabetes two and even some ones are living long happy lives.
